Blah, blah, blah, bad dog! blah blah. Do you think your dog isn’t listening to you? Maybe you’re simply not speaking his language. You may have heard of dog whisperer or dog listener techniques. This is what makes our dog training unique and effective.
Socializing your dog is a very important part of any training. This helps to increase your dog’s confidence and desensitize them to everyday distractions, teaching them how to behave in public. Once you’ve mastered obedience commands at home, the next step is to apply your training in a social setting, teaching your dog how to behave around many “real life” distractions. Some types of proofing can be carried out in training classes, but many classes take place indoors and as such are of limited value for proofing. Much better for many types of proofing are gundog training classes which take place outdoors and involve other dogs, and people in a real life environment.
The practice of delayed retrieving also pays dividends by making it easier for your pup to learn hand signals and blind retrieves. If you have four or five dead ducks on the water that have been there a while, your pup is not going to remember exactly where they are. He knows they are there and will eagerly cast off in their general direction, but his certainty will waver and he will be prone to seeking help from you.
Hi I have a 4 month old lab who every time I put a leash on him he refuses to move. If he even sees me get the leash he runs to the nearest corner to evade me. I have had him for a month and no amount of praise or treats gets him to move. I am at my wits end. If I drop the leash he will pick it up and follow me but the minute I pick it up he sits down. And I thought I was the stubborn one. He will walk with me without the leash fine. But there are leash laws where I live. Any advice?

Highly recommend Will to train your dog. He has done an amazing job with my 16 month old Great Dane! Moose has totally made a complete turn around to his unruly days! And with Will’s help I’m on my way to accomplishing a dream….Moose will start working on becoming a certified therapy dog as soon as his obedience training is over. Huge thank you!
Consequences must be consistent When training your dog, you-and everyone else who interacts with her-should respond the same way to things she does every time she does them. For example, if you sometimes pet your dog when she jumps up to greet you but sometimes yell at her instead, she’s bound to get confused. How can she know when it’s okay to jump up and when it’s not?
Thank you for coming out to our place, and for the guidance and puppy training. We feel much more confident about how to be great puppy owners! Your training style and encouragement has made a wonderful impact on us novice dog people. – Suja and Richard, Guerneville, CA

The trick, of course, is to find an excellent class and instructor. The dog training industry isn’t regulated, and anyone can claim to be a trainer or obedience instructor, so it pays to check around before you sign up for a class. It’s bad enough to waste money on a poor class, but your dog is also vulnerable to being frightened or even injured by the wrong person. If possible, observe a class or two before you sign up, and meet or observe your prospective instructor.
Gloria was phenomenal!! She got along great with our puppy Swag and we could tell from the start that Swag loved her! Within 4 short weeks, we have already seen a huge improvement in our puppy’s mannerisms and overall behavior.

The advantage of ‘mocking up’ a fake scenario, rather than waiting to stumble across real live situations, is that it enables you to ‘set the dog up to win’, and to control the consequences of his actions. You can read more about this strategy in this article: Faking It!

Our friends are always impressed with how well behaved our dog is, and it’s made her agility training progress faster. Our lives with our canine companion is much more enriching.

Hey I have a 7 month old male lab retriever, I have tried and tried to teach him obedience but with no luck he just doesn’t do it. He is very energetic as would all puppies be, but he seems to me to have a lack of respect and basically just runs rings round me. Out walking he pulls, he runs after everything! Birds, leaves, people, dogs, any vehicle, heck even if the wind blows the grass he tries to catch it… He’s awful when someone passes, if he sees another dog he goes completely nuts and will stop at nothing to get to them.. To the point of knocking me down or biting for restraining him. I’ve tried averting his attention but that definitely doesn’t work… He knocks over the kids and pulls on their tops. He jumps up and he bits a lot, I thought this was mouthing but any time you put your hand out to pet him he tries to snap it. He has excited urination which has been a challenge to get over but we have managed that (sort of)…before we got him a read a tone of books and researched a lot on training but it’s just not worked… Is it me? I don’t believe harsh punishment works, plenty praise and plenty love and affection but when your bitten or nipped on the legs every time your back is to him, he tears into possessions and just runs a mockery I’m at my wits end! HELP!!!
