The mission and origins of Bark Busters were developed to prevent the euthanasia and surrender of dogs to animal shelters because of behavior problems. As volunteers in a Greyhound adoption program we have seen many dogs returned because the owners did not understand the training needs of their pet. By joining the Bark Busters pack, we can provide proven pet training methods and restore happiness to their homes. And these results apply to mature dog training, puppy training, rescue dog training, greyhound training, or virtually any breed, any issue.
Whether you only want a few hours of daycare per week or you need us to do pretty much everything except snuggle with your dog on the couch at night (and sometimes even that), we’ve got you covered. We’re not just a daycare, or a dog walker, or whatever.
Matt is not big on books and unfortunately had a dearth of literary learning. He is a visual learner, a hands-on learner who works best by actually doing a task. Luckily he has a really good teacher who thinks of ways to meet each student’s needs equitably. One such example of this is when Matt’s teacher assigns him to starting a business and keeping records of profit and loss. A satisfactory assignment will mean an extra math credit for gun-shy math Matt.
One of the most common questions dog owners ask me is: “How can I stop my dog from doing (a specific bad behavior)?” My answer is almost always the same, no matter what the misbehavior is…. [read more]

Giving in to your puppy’s every need is not a good thing. As your puppy grows, so will his need to assert himself. Puppies often choose mealtimes as a battleground. But giving in to him is a mistake. You need to make sure he knows that you won’t respond to his every demand.
The most common mistake people make is to stop reinforcing the behaviors they like. It is easy to ignore the obedient dog, to forget to give him a tasty reward from time to time when he flies back to a toot on your whistle.
Our Puppy Class is for pups 9 weeks through 5 months old. The puppy owner learns how to use positive methods to teach the puppy good manners and to build a bond of love and respect. The pup is socialized with other puppies and people and taught exercises to help them gain confidence when meeting new situations and objects. The puppy will learn to come when called, sit, lie down, stand, and not pull on the leash while walking. They are also taught to settle down, be touched and be examined by both the owner and a stranger. The instructor leads discussions on Jumping Up, Home Training Problems, Nutrition, Grooming, Crate Training, Spay/Neutering and other subjects to help the puppy’s family become responsible pet owners. Puppies are also taught the meaning of “Off”, to remove themselves from furniture, etc. Instructions for teaching some tricks (roll over, etc.) are included to give the puppy and handler additional “training fun” and to let the dog “show off”. A Training Handbook is issued to each student.

If the pup continually makes mistakes, then either you aren’t communicating clearly with the dog or he is tired and has lost concentration. Either way, stop and reassess the situation. If necessary, bring the session to an end (on a positive note) and try again later.

I cannot say enough great things about Dog School. My husband and I have very hectic schedules and a very energetic dog so this place is a lifesaver. Before dog school, we didn’t think that our dog Abbey was capable of being tired out-even after multiple long trips to the dog park. We could not have been more wrong-Abbey is all smiles and can hardly stay awake when we get her home.
Mny thanks for the site. In India pups are always provided at 40 days as a standard. I wish i’d read your site earlier and followed your advice on taking our lab put at 8 weeks. He came to us at 40 days and is now going to turn 12 weeks tomorrow. We love him to death and is spoilt silly. He is the new baby in the family and asks for attention when he doesnt get it like when we have to leave him some time and go downstairs. He is super chatty and tries to communicate all the time. The problem though is he is a barky and neighbours arent taking well to all the noise. Am not sure if there is anything i can do about it. Please help.

Submissive dogs and some breeds such as Labradors often open their mouths in a kind of lop-sided “grin”, and indeed, it is a sign of friendliness. But when lips are drawn back tightly to bare the teeth, that’s aggression, make no mistake.
Play safely while you supervise training. Never play roughly with a puppy that bites. Rough play will only encourage this behavior and strongly establish it in the puppy’s mind. Never use your hands as toys. You should also closely watch children playing around or with the puppy. Kids are not equipped to train a puppy and injuries can happen.
Pet owners can ask to sit in on a dog obedience training session to see if it’s right for their dogs. When they feel comfortable with the trainer and notice other pet owners enjoying the training class, they will have a better idea of how their money will be spent.
The first ten to fifteen minutes of the session are devoted to our trainers learning all about your dog. This is the time for you to discuss specific problems your dog is having. The more our trainers are able to learn, the better they can help.

Use real rewards Be sure to reward your dog with things she truly finds rewarding. Some dogs will happily work for dry kibble when training in your living room but ignore it if you’re training in the park. Because the park’s a more distracting environment, paying attention there is a harder job for your dog. Pay her accordingly by using a reward worth working for, like small pieces of chicken or cheese, or a chance to run off-leash at the dog park with her buddies. Also keep in mind that what your dog considers rewarding at any given time may change. If she’s just eaten a big meal, a scratch behind the ears or a game of tug might be most rewarding. If she hasn’t eaten in a while, she’ll probably work enthusiastically for tasty treats.

This may be a little off-topic but I can’t find any information on this anywhere else. Can I train my lab to tolerate increasing noise levels in our home with this reinforcement method? Gradually increasing his exposure to the noise until he is able to tolerate it in a relaxed state?
There aren’t possibly enough good things to be said about Dog School. I rescued a hot mess of an Australian Cattle créer une entreprise de vente en ligne who had more energy than any ten dogs could possibly need… and unfortunately almost no training or socialization. Dog School has been an invaluable resource in both saving my own sanity (giving this ball of energy a fun place to be on days when I can’t provide that as much as I’d like- she is always TIRED OUT at the end of the day!) and introducing her to other wonderful dogs that she can safely play with and make friends. I’ve had no worries about her safety- the staff is wonderful about working with her and being attentive to how she’s doing. It’s been about a year and I’m positive that Dog School has been a critical part of the progress she’s made.
Wow, where to begin? Bull’s Eye (Jack Russell Terrier) kept us on a constant watch for escapes! Anytime the door was cracked open he would be on the loose and we would spend hours chasing him down or waiting for a phone call that someone had him. He pulled us around when we took him on the leash, barked non stop at other dogs, birds, squirrels, children etc. Basically, he trained us to move our lives around to suit him. But Sit Means Sit and JB gave me the dog of my dreams!! I can’t say enough about Sit Means Sit training and JB. I am a single mom and was concerned about spending the money on Bulls Eye but I knew I had to do it or we were going to loose him one day. So I did it. It was the BEST MONEY I have ever spent in my lifetime!!! His personality has not changed at all, he is still the wonderful, loving dog he has always been, but now he is obedient and a delight to take outside and other places. My neighbors are thrilled and constantly commenting on what a change they see in Bulls Eye. He is so much happier as am I. I am eternally grateful for Tom, JB and Sit Means Sit!! Sign us up for more training!!
Initial Behavioral Consultation is a 2 hour visit. We work together to understand your goals and dog’s needs, and create a customized training plan based on your dog’s breed and temperament. Training plans include the most effective ways to quickly teach obedience, but also, how to stop behavior problems using our proven methods.
Although many adult dogs with poor obedience understand certain commands very well at home, sometimes it helps to retrain a command right from the beginning using a new ‘signal’ simply because the old one has come to mean nothing outdoors in the big wide world.
Another dog is therefore a ‘distraction’ against which you must ‘proof’ your ‘recall’ and other trained skills. But the power of this or any other distraction will vary according to the activity level, and proximity of the other dog.
