Matt Misco, 11 and his sister Lily, 6 have a very different lifestyle than most of their peers. Matt’s family believe in letting him roam in a “Free Range” style. The Miscos live off the land and use a wood burning stove for cooking and for heating their home. Because Matt has not had as much exposure to peers and has a whole different frame of references, his peers make him the target of taunting. School is especially challenging for the boy.

The Labrador Retriever was first bred as a fishing dog in Newfoundland. They have been referred to by many other names, like Lesser Newfoundland and St. John’s Dog. Today, it is one of the most sought-after breeds in the US, and the dogs are called Labrador or, more commonly, a Lab. A Labrador is intelligent, playful and fun-loving, but can be a little dogged when it comes to obedience! So, it is recommended that you start training your Lab from an early age, preferably when he is a little more than 12 weeks. The Labrador serves as a great companion dog and is yellow, black or golden in color. It is a breed that is most commonly trained as watch dogs and police dogs, and for the detection of narcotics and explosives. They also serve as guiding eyes for the blind. This article on tips to train a Labrador, will help you in the proper training of your gorgeous Labrador pup.

I have rescued a 1 year old lab with NO training. She jumps, BAD, and she cannot walk on a leash and isn’t housetrained. Any suggestions? I love her personality and she has already adjusted to my children (except for the jumping)! Any suggestions on training an older puppy would be nice.

Submissive dogs and some breeds such as Labradors often open their mouths in a kind of lop-sided “grin”, and indeed, it is a sign of friendliness. But when lips are drawn back tightly to bare the teeth, that’s aggression, make no mistake.

There are several common methods of dog training, including classical conditioning, operant-conditioning training (encompassing positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement training), dominance-based training, clicker training, and electronic training. Classical conditioning dates back to Pavlov – it means learning through association. If one thing consistently leads to another, a dog will associate the first with the second. The long-term result is to create habitual behaviors. Operant conditioning can be split into two sub-categories: positive reinforcement, where a dog is rewarded for good behavior, and negative, where a dog experiences consequences for bad behavior. The long-term result creates a dynamic where a dog will try new environments or behaviors due to owner prompts. Clicker training is a very popular sub-category of operant conditioning, where a dog is first trained with treats and corresponding “click” noise, and then gradually weaned to do the same processes for fewer treats but the same amount of clicks. Dominance-based training is a controversial method that is modeled around the “Alpha dog” hierarchy model, where one creature leads a pack. However, though dominance training has many naysayers, it is the precursor of the iconic “Dog Whisperer” method popularized by Cesar Millan.

According to the American Pet Products Association, annual pet expenditures have grown 113% since 2001 and are expected to exceed $60 billion in 2015. While no school can guarantee employment after graduation, the growth of the animal industry, means that opportunities exist in this industry. 2

Prospective dog trainers can get their training in a variety of ways. There are no college degree programs that prepare people for careers in dog training, but some find specific courses helpful in understanding the science behind animal behavior. A course in psychology, for example, may provide some insight into principles of animal learning like reinforcement, punishment, motivation, and conditioning. Dog trainers can also learn through reading books by authorities in the field and from online resources, such as the Animal Behavior Resources Institute.

If you go out to work during the day and are planning to leave your puppy alone for more than an hour or two, you’ll need to let your puppy go to the bathroom indoors, and we’ll be looking at the best way to do that and still end up with a house trained dog.

One of the most endearing qualities of Labrador Retrievers is that they remain very puppy-like long after they’ve reached adulthood. The downside is that their energy level and tendency to get into mischief continues well into adulthood as well. Therefore, it pays to have behavior management tools handy. Some management tools to keep in mind:

This may be a little off-topic but I can’t find any information on this anywhere else. Can I train my lab to tolerate increasing noise levels in our home with this reinforcement method? Gradually increasing his exposure to the noise until he is able to tolerate it in a relaxed state?

At its best and when given proper puppy socialization and training the Labrador Retriever is: Highly intelligent, gentle, affectionate, loyal, utterly dependable, good natured, lively and eager to please. They are superb with children, good with other dogs and animals.

“In mid-Aug this year, I got a 44 days old male fawn lab pup, he was weighing 2.5 Kg at that time. From day one my pup is active and having his food 3 times a day. He is very active, bites, eats and licks everything which reaches his mouth. Probably because of this in 2nd week of bringing him home he had diarrhea and it was a nightmare for me for a week. We immediately took him to vet and he was completely fine in a week.

My two yellow labs have been patients now for one year with Dr. Tony Meyers and Ginger. I want people to know how great this office is not only during the first visit but every single time you visit. One of my dogs has diabetes and is insulin dependent twice a day. It was a huge adjustment for m…

At Dogs Trust we have a mission; we want every dog to lead a happy life free from the threat from unnecessary destruction. It means that a lot of our work is caring for dogs at our rehoming centres – dogs that need a second chance in life. But it also means addressing the root causes of problems. Every year we receive thousands of calls from people asking us to take their dogs into our rehoming centres, and the biggest single reason they give is because of the dog’s behaviour. So to address this problem, we’ve created Dogs Trust Dog School.
