To help your dog know when barking is acceptable, you simply need to teach him that he may bark until he is told to stop. “Stop barking” should be considered as a command for obedience rather than a telling off.

I absolutely loved the characters. I loved the Miscos, Matt’s teacher and Tubbs as well as their curly tailed huskies. This is such a wonderful book that at the risk of sounding corny, I am really going to miss these characters, human and husky. This is a book I would recommend for classrooms and school discussion groups and projects. Another excellent feature included in this book was the glossary of mushing terms and the illustration of a musher with a husky sled team.

I bought this book to share with the pre schoolers in my life after we got a golden retriever puppy. The kids really enjoyed Tinka’s story and the colorful pictures that accompany it. Reading the kindle version on my iPad worked out well and it was fantastic I could have a copy across platforms (cell phone, iPad, computer) without lugging a physical book around since “Tinka” has been so popular. We have even read it to the puppy!

Trainers are eligible for the CCPDT’s dog trainer “knowledge assessed” certification if they can show that they have at least 300 hours of experience as a dog trainer, and that 75 percent of those hours were spent leading classes as a head trainer. Once a trainer meets eligibility requirements, he or she can take a certification exam.

In order to train your Labrador effectively, you’ll need the right tools for the job. The next few articles discuss the various tools and equipment available and how and when you should use them…if at all…as I do not recommend them all.

So far everything seems to be moving forward. We have not allowed any of them on the couch and we have been able to have them all in the same room so that’s been nice. We are still working on building her confidence and will keep you posted. Thanks again.

I enjoy reading your articles, but can you help with our 4yr old lab gun dog, a rescue dog, that is scarred of barking dogs. She will mix with & play with quiet dogs, but runs away when she hears a dog bark. Any ideas of how to stop this?

When we brought Weezer home from the shelter, he had an unfortunate habit of nipping hard enough to draw blood. This was unacceptable around my grandchildren (ages 8 months, and 4, 8 and 9 years). The nine year old lives with me, and the others visit frequently, so I called the shelter and made arrangements to return Weezer. However, I’d heard of good results with board and train, and decided to try that before giving up on Weezer. Training Tracks has been wonderful with him—no more bi…

Take the dog that lies down at a quiet word or signal from his owner, and remains there without moving, even when his owner walks out of sight or moves around, and even when children or dogs run past.

Formal dog training has traditionally been delayed until 6 months of age. Actually, this juvenile stage is a very poor time to start. The dog is learning from every experience and delaying training means missed opportunities for the dog to learn how you would like him to behave. During the juvenile stage, the dog is beginning to solidify adult behavioral patterns and progresses through fear periods. Behaviors learned in puppyhood may need to be changed. In addition, anything that has already been learned or trained incorrectly will need to be undone and re-taught. Puppies are capable of learning much from an early age.

When training is started at 7 to 8 weeks of age, use methods that rely on positive reinforcement and gentle teaching. Puppies have short attention spans, so training sessions should be brief, but should occur daily. Puppies can be taught to “sit,” “down,” and “stand” using a method called food-lure training. We use food treats to entice the dog to follow its nose into the proper positions for “sit,” “down,” “stand,” and “stay”.

They often make a good job of teaching the skill at home and then are very upset when the dog’s obedience falls apart in public.  What they are essentially doing is attempting the ‘challenge’  method,  but usually without any effective form of punishment.

Like anything, pups learn faster when things are fun. Be sure to keep the tone of the training session happy and fun. Use your tone of voice and general energy levels to motivate the pup and encourage him along.

Mike took the time with each member of our family to help us clearly understand. We all learned so much. Both puppies responded almost immediately, it makes so much sense to have us learn to communicate in a way that works for the puppies. A kind and gentle way of training, so its fun for the pups and us.

He becomes steady, with little effort and no punishment. Additionally, he develops into a calm, pleasant hunting companion. The same principle applies to the older dog in hunting situations. If you send the dog immediately every time a bird falls, then you are training him to break. Make his life easier by making him wait.

Matt’s family raises sled dogs to he decides to start a school to teach Mushing. He ends up having two students. Tubbs is a bit clunky but loveable. He takes immediately to Matt’s family lifestyle but not so much to the physical effort of dog sledding. Alex is an overachiever who seems to know everything and takes immediately to the challenge of running the dogs.

Even though a dog may know what’s expected of them without distractions, you may go back to square one once you attempt a command in a new environment. Your dog needs to learn that “Sit!” means to sit down everywhere – not just in your living room.
