We can show you how to eliminate these problems and train your dog to be polite, respectful and obedient. In our In Home Training, or Dog Board and Train programs, we can show you how to make calm, happy obedience a reality for you and your dog.
They often make a good job of teaching the skill at home and then are very upset when the dog’s obedience falls apart in public. What they are essentially doing is attempting the ‘challenge’ method, but usually without any effective form of punishment.
There is no universal vaccination protocol for dogs because of differing opinion among veterinarians, and also because of the ways in which DIY vaccinations are marketed and distributed to pet owners. The truth about vaccinations is there is no puppy vaccination protocol! Whole Dog Journal editor Na…
A puppy younger than 8 weeks old should be spending nearly all of its time with its mother and litter-mates because it learns so much about being a dog: Bite inhibition, canine communication, pack order, play, how to accept discipline and more besides. So taking a puppy any earlier is wrong and detrimental to their development.
The cost of dog training varies by location, and also depends on whether training is one-on-one or group classes, and whether it is at a facility or in-home. Pet stores and non-specialized trainers cost between $70-150 for a multi-week beginner-training group class. Private training averages $60-70 per session. For dogs with aggression issues, private training costs may increase to $90-100 per session.
Another great benefit is that they never ever crate the dogs for “nap” time. I don’t know about you, but my dog can nap plenty at home. When I take him to dog school, I know he is going to have 100% fun for 100% of the day!
Are policies and procedures in place to keep you and your dog safe? If a dog in your class is aggressive toward other dogs or people, or if an owner cannot manage an overexuberant big dog, instructors should be ready and willing to take steps to keep other class members from being injured or frightened.

The Labrador is the breed I most commonly work with, and I am alarmed at the trends I see. It has become the general custom to force-fetch train every dog. This corrects any tendency to drop birds, mouth birds or run off to the bushes with birds. It also masks the genetic tendencies toward those behaviors.

I inherited a 7 yr. old black lab a year ago. He knows the basic commands but doesn’t always do them for me. When I take him for a walk I’m pulled until I feel my arm is coming off. He is now refusing to eat his food, seems to prefer the cats food. Can you help me?

Early in the 19th century, the Earl of Malmesbury reputedly saw one of the dogs of this type and had it imported; in 1830, the noted British sportsman Colonel Hawker referred to the Lab as “the best for any kind of shooting…generally black and no bigger than a Pointer, very fine in legs, with short, smooth hair…is extremely quick running, swimming, and fighting…and their sense of smell is hardly to be credited.”
1-13-15I first met Dr. Chase January 2009 and Ike was about 4 Mo. old. Dr. Chase started Ike (poodle) with all of his shots, etc. All of a sudden Ike developed a problem with one of his legs. Slipped out of place and Dr. Chas operated on his leg and the operation was a success and Ike was abl…
Explore the nature paths and common areas of beautiful Markham Park, while learning basic handling skills, such as loose leash walking, wait, come and polite greeting. Great exercise for you and your dog. We will hike through secluded wooded trails, as well as utilize common areas for opportunities to socialize your dog and work with distractions. A different path is taken each class. Some trails are rugged and you must wear appropriate shoes, and carry necessities such as water for you and your dog. Walking shoes and a back-pack are recommended. Dogs and puppies of all ages are welcome, but must have proof of rabies. Your dog must be friendly to people and other dogs. If your dog is not appropriate for this class, you may participate without him, and learn handling skills you can then implement at home. People without dogs are welcome. Children must be 12 years or older. The cost for this one-hour session is $20 per person (not per dog). Pre-registration by phone is required; call 954-349-5969.
What if we lived in a country where it was acceptable to allow our human children to do whatever they wanted with their time? What if they weren’t put into structured learning environments like school or sports? No one gave them any direction. They had no rules, no boundaries, and no limitations. How well do you think those children would do at becoming productive citizens? Would they all be “bad” kids? Of course not! They would be the product of their environment.

My dog and I have been working with RD for a couple of months now and I am amazed at the knowledge and guidance she has provided me with my dog. I have a reactive dog and have tried other trainers with no luck. I am seeing more progress with my dog in the last couple of months than any of the previous attempts at training. RD helps you become a relaxed and confident leader which is exactly what my dogs needs. I could not recommend her enough!!
Then put more efforts into house training her if you can. Lots of praise and reward every time she potty’s in the correct place, and for a while you have to prevent her pottying in the wrong place. You particularly need to prevent her soiling in her crate, so for a while this may mean setting an alarm and getting up in the middle of the night for a while to take her to the toilet spot until she gets out of the habit.
After enjoying a successful career in education, the decision to become a professional dog trainer was easy. “Training dogs is all about training their owners,” says Brandon. “My experience with teaching and coaching really works for me as a business owner and professional dog trainer.”
The typical Labrador retriever of 30 or 40 years ago was a gentle, calm dog. Today, an unfortunately large number of Labradors are hyperactive and difficult to train. The basic reason for this shift in breeding selection appears to be our field-trial system.
1. During initial meet and greet you drop off your dog and stay with them while they meet other dogs and check out the space. I was very nervous because all the dogs were much bigger than him but they were very friendly. Since there wasn’t any type of psychological test to prove my dog isn’t batshit crazy, I inquired how they know if other dogs aren’t batshit crazy. Safety first people! Basically, they can tell almost immediately if a dog isn’t going to work out by body language etc and they keep an eye on the dogs the entire time which put me at ease. It also makes sense that it would not be in their best interest to keep a dog that is unpredictable.
“From the moment I stepped off the plane in North Carolina the learning process began, I felt very welcome and I knew this was my kind of place the moment we arrived. From then on the fun began, learning how to decoy for different kinds of dogs (Police, PSA, and Personal Protection), learning how to use the E-Collar for specialized applications, and most importantly developing the work ethic that separates amateurs from professionals. At this point I can safely say attending Tarheel Canine has been the best decision I’ve ever made. Not only did I attain the knowledge, skills, and work ethic to become successful in this industry, I got to meet and learn from people that truly make me a better person.”
In order to be certified as a therapy dog or emotional support dog, animals need to receive an evaluation/written designation from a licensed health professional: social worker, physician, psychiatrist typically. As for service dogs, which are allowed to accompany their owners into most businesses and pet-restricted areas, they can receive training, certifications, and registrations from several organizations such as TDI and United States Service Dog Registry. These certifications are not required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, but may streamline the process of getting a dog access to typically off-limits areas. Service dogs and therapy dogs are not the same thing. The same dog might fall into both categories, but therapy and emotional support animals are not recognized under the ADA.

Some dogs trained this way can appear quite ‘cowed’ and nervous. Nowadays this kind of treatment of dogs is not popular and the challenge method is beginning to fall into disrepute due to the harsh punishments that can be involved.

Redirect your puppy’s attention using teething toys. When he has calmed down, gently talk to him and stroke him. Keep your hand away from his mouth. Start playing again and avoid getting the puppy excited. This time, use toys instead of your hands to get your puppy engaged. Start playing fetch, so that you are tossing toys away from you and using the puppy’s prey drive for positive fun. Playing with toys can be used as a training reward or break and keeps your hands away from the puppy’s teeth.
