The most important tip in obedience training is to let your Labrador know that you are the Alpha person, that is, you are the leader. There are several ways to achieve this. One way is to feed your Labrador at regular intervals and not when it wants to. When you take your dog for a walk, make sure to not let the dog decide which direction to go. It is essential to exercise control over your dog to ascertain that the dog is eager to obey your commands. Taking good care of your dog will help it build its trust in you. Once your dog learns to trust you, it will accept you as the leader and will be more than happy to please you.

Our Life of the Dog Guarantee assures you that peace of mind is possible. We will work with you in solving all of your dog’s behavior issues – from jumping up, unnecessary barking, house training, aggressive behavior, separation anxiety and more — all in the convenience of your home!

The coaches work in teams of three, so you should get to know all the team members over your course. Occasionally there may be a change in one coach because of sickness or holidays, but if this is necessary, we will try to ensure that you are introduced to your new coach the week before the change so that they are familiar with you and your dog.

I have a 3 yr old choc lab who is very well behaved normally, however in the last 2 weeks or so he has started mounting other dogs when off lead. His recall is good but hardly ever stops humping the dogs when called off. He has never done this before, can it be a sudden new behaviour or maybe a medical condition causing this? ( ive heard it could sometimes be from urinary tract infection?) Some advice would be great as my vets aren’t brilliant.

The cost of dog training varies by location, and also depends on whether training is one-on-one or group classes, and whether it is at a facility or in-home. RD is amazing! Seriously, best dog trainer I’ve ever worked with! And there has been a few. When my girlfriend told me she booked an appointment for our dog troubles I was skeptical, to say the least…. She arrived on time, she introduced herself and got immediately to work. I have a German Shepherd that has aggression issues and a few others. We put our dog in his kennel prior to her arrival. She asked us to exit the room so there were no extra energies (fear from us) present. Within five minutes our dog had silenced his disapproval of her presence in ‘his’ house and she invited us back into the room. To our amazement, our dog was out of his kennel, and leashed by her side. This was shocking! I never would’ve believed it if I wasn’t there as a witness. She diagnosed our dog, showed us how to work him past his issues and take control of our household again. Her rates are affordable, she’s incredibly intelligent and a downright cool person to work with. I highly, highly, highly recommend giving her a chance to earn your business! You won’t regret it. Moreover, training precision lining and long-distance handling require a great deal of repetition and some degree of punishment. The dog that excels at these skills tends to be hyperactive, with a high pain threshold, which is exactly the type of dog we are breeding today.

To communicate clearly and consistently with your dog, you need to understand how she learns. Dogs learn through the immediate consequences of their behavior. The nature of those consequences determines how they’ll behave in the future. Dogs, like other animals (people included), work to get good things and avoid bad things in life. If a behavior results in something rewarding-like food, a good belly rub, playtime with dog buddies or a game of fetch with her pet parent-your dog will do that behavior more often. On the other hand, if a behavior results in an unpleasant consequence-like being ignored or losing things she finds rewarding-she’ll do that behavior less often.

Not only will you be taught by instructors that are knowledgeable in the dog training industry, you will have the opportunity to learn from those who continue to operate a successful, multifaceted dog training business. Our trainers continue to train dogs of all types, from aggressive pet dogs to police, military and service dogs on a daily basis.

Regarding food, try to get the same food your breeder uses so your puppy doesn’t have to go through change which often ends in digestive upset for a few days. The food your breeder uses, or a food you source, will have instructions on how much to feed your puppy and how often. You’ll read advice on how often and what times to feed a puppy in the house training article I already linked to.

For successful training, practice the following basic training steps with your puppy every day. Keep training sessions short. Your puppy will see everything as a game, so keep him stimulated by changing what he’s learning. Do each command for about five minutes and come back to it whenever you can.

I absolutely loved the characters. I loved the Miscos, Matt’s teacher and Tubbs as well as their curly tailed huskies. This is such a wonderful book that at the risk of sounding corny, I am really going to miss these characters, human and husky. This is a book I would recommend for classrooms and school discussion groups and projects. Another excellent feature included in this book was the glossary of mushing terms and the illustration of a musher with a husky sled team.

Take baby steps Dogs, just like people, learn best when new tasks are broken down into small steps. For example, you can’t go out and line dance unless you learn all of the individual steps first! When teaching your dog a new skill, begin with an easy first step and increase difficulty gradually. If you’re training your dog to stay, start by asking her to stay for just 3 seconds. After some practice, try increasing the duration of her stay to 8 seconds. When your dog has mastered an 8-second stay, make things a little harder by increasing the time to 15 seconds. Over the next week or two, continue to gradually increase the duration of the stay from 15 seconds to 30 seconds to a minute to a few minutes, etc. By training systematically and increasing difficulty slowly, you’ll help your dog learn faster in the long run.

Consider putting her in a crate when you leave the house. If you don’t like crates, then consider a playpen. To train her to stop, when she bites you, pull her away and firmly say no. Don’t scare or punish her though. Just make sure she knows it is not okay.

But bearing in mind to ‘go slow and not expect too much’, you can’t expect a puppy to put the laundry in the basket or perform a 3 minute sit with children running around. But you can train them basic things such as:

Hey,I have a 4 month old black labrador and he keeps jumping on my boyfriend and bitting his pants, I can see that he is playing but there are 3 weeks now and we don’t seem to manage him.We all leave together, but I give him the food and water and I play with him, but every time my boyfriend gets out to play with him after few minutes he starts bitting.Any advice? Thank you !!!

Do you own a Labrador pup? Well, then you are lucky because the Labrador is, by nature, a very sociable and friendly breed. This makes some dog owners feel there’s no need to train them. What they don’t understand is that training your pup and teaching him how to behave, is essential for his well-being. Once you begin, you realize that it is fun to train a Labrador, as they are quick learners. Here are a few tips you can incorporate to make obedience training a great experience for both, you and your Lab.

Help your puppy socialize as much as possible. Let your puppy meet other dogs and lots of people in a positive environment. Introduce him to all sorts of new experiences while he is still very young.[10] Enroll the puppy obedience training classes early on and reinforce his place within the family structure.

The program fee of $130 per dog includes six classes and there must be at least one adult handler per dog. The $130 fee does not include the park entrance fee of $1.50 per person. The dog student must be at least 5 months of age and have a current Broward County rabies tag. No aggressive dogs, please. Registration is required. See registration form.

GROUPS: If you have a group, and would like to set up a group session, we require a minimum of 15 dogs. You must collect the fees, and pay one fee to us. Each client must still sign a release which can be done when they train. The group rate is $69 per dog, and applies to first time dogs as well as refresher dogs. We do not currently offer training off site.

Some dog training methods are based on what makes the owner feel good, rather than what on actually makes sense to the dog. For example, “positive-only” dog training is a big fad right now. Now, treats can be great motivators for training Labrador Retrievers, but if your dog will only obey for a treat, then he is in charge of his obedience, not you. [read more]

This method enables you to build a lasting, emotional bond based on trust and respect, which in turn aids in overcoming past challenges with your pet. Bark Busters dog trainers focus heavily on training people, as much or more as training dogs, so that once you learn to communicate effectively with your dog, you will have the necessary tools to be an effective dog trainer and “leader of his/her pack.”

Many dog trainers are self-employed, or work for a small business, often owned by a head trainer. Sometimes other pet-related businesses hire dog trainers, such as vets, shelters, groomers, and pet stores. Sometimes trainers are hired by local city or county recreation departments, 4H clubs, or other community groups.

Giving in to your puppy’s every need is not a good thing. As your puppy grows, so will his need to assert himself. Puppies often choose mealtimes as a battleground. But giving in to him is a mistake. You need to make sure he knows that you won’t respond to his every demand.

First time ever I own a pet at my home. i have a lab (Zooby) which is 2 months old and it is very naughty and playful. I’m following the training methods that you have mentioned in your site but not very successful. I would like to know when is the right time to train my pet and when is the right time (mature) for my Zooby to understand my instructions?

Hey,I have a 4 month old black labrador and he keeps jumping on my boyfriend and bitting his pants, I can see that he is playing but there are 3 weeks now and we don’t seem to manage him.We all leave together, but I give him the food and water and I play with him, but every time my boyfriend gets out to play with him after few minutes he starts bitting.Any advice? Thank you !!!

Methods of training: Positive Reinforcement, Negative Reinforcement, Negative Punishment and Negative Punishment these technical terms refer to different methods of training. Most dog trainers don’t truly understand these terms and or the methods that are attached to each. Our Dog Training Instructors are required to be versed in all methods of training. Each and every dog is an individual. Attempting to use the same methods for all dogs is akin to using diesel fuel in every motor – that will not work. Matching the method of training to your dog is the single most important decision that must be made both on the onset of training and throughout the entire training process. We are able to assign the correct methods to your dog each time we work with them, this makes training more effective while reducing the amount of work required to accomplish your goals.

“Leave it! / Drop it!” The first command is important if you see your dog going for that cigarette butt on the ground. The second command is for when they’re already chewing on it. (Related: How to train your lab to drop and leave items.)

Field and Classroom sessions are held at Snowbird and Alta Ski Resorts. The WBR International Dog School caters to rescue teams of all skill levels, and is a great opportunity to exchange ideas, experiences, and methods with peer rescue teams from areas throughout the US.

Consequences must be immediate Dogs live in the present. Unlike us, they can’t make connections between events and experiences that are separated in time. For your dog to connect something she does with the consequences of that behavior, the consequences must be immediate. If you want to discourage your dog from doing something, you have to catch her with her paw in the proverbial cookie jar. For example, if your dog gets too rough during play and mouths your arm, try saying “OUCH!” right at the moment you feel her teeth touch your skin. Then abruptly end playtime. The message is immediate and clear: Mouthing on people results in no more fun. Rewards for good behavior must come right after that behavior has happened, too. Say a child in a classroom answers a teacher’s question correctly, gets up from his desk, sharpens his pencil and then punches another kid in the arm on the way back to his seat. Then the teacher says, “Good job, Billy!” and offers him a piece of candy. What did Billy get the candy for? Timing is crucial. So be prepared to reward your dog with treats, praise, petting and play the instant she does something you like.

Quality Time Together: Spending time with your dog is an obvious benefit of putting in those training hours. After all, why did you get your furry friend if you don’t want to spend time building a relationship?

We come to you providing an invaluable service from the comfort of your own home. Your dog’s own territory is a non-adrenalized environment where he or she can be relaxed and more receptive to learning, providing for faster and more effective results, with none of the stress, distractions and learning impairment typical of a group-training environment.

Drop your dog off with Partners between 8 and 4 pm, Monday to Friday, for daycare and a little training. Depending on your dogs personality we can also let them run and play in our playgroup sessions.

Imagine your dog being calm, peaceful, happy, friendly and obedient – without treats or a prong collar or an e-collar. Imagine your dog walking peacefully next to or behind you as you walk down a crowded street with people, traffic, and even other dogs and animals passing by. No lunging, pulling or troublemaking. Imagine your dog lying peacefully by your side as you enjoy a meal at an outdoor cafe while strangers pass all around. Yes … your dog!

I place the blame for this on our field-trial system. Our retriever field trials were brought over from England in the early 1900s, along with the golden and Labrador retrievers. The trials were small and very representative of a day’s shooting, and the skills judged were those that had value to the hunting dog and hunter. The trials emphasized game-finding ability, softness of mouth and calmness of demeanor.

After you decide on some new skills you’d like to teach your dog, you’ll be ready to start training. To maximize her learning potential and make sure you both enjoy the training experience, keep the following basic tips in mind:

Biting during play is often due to over excitement. Try and control the play so he doesn’t become over excited. One way to do this is to play for 15 second bursts, where you set down toys and don’t interact again until the puppy is sitting attentively. This short ‘time out’ sessions stop him getting too revved up. Plus, if he does nip, stop the game immediately and leave the room. This sends out the message that if he bites, the game ends.

Greetings! We are on holiday break until Wednesday, January 3, when all classes, lessons and client correspondence will resume. Here’s wishing you and your four legged family members a safe, warm and happy holiday season! Enjoy!

Training a labrador puppy is an essential and rewarding experience for both you and your puppy. The intelligence and eager to please nature of the Labrador make them a highly trainable breed – they are gifted and willing students. From puppy house training right through to advanced obedience training the Labrador is at the head of the class.

RD is AMAZING.  We adopted our Pitbull James Bond from a local rescue agency. He’s a sweet but sorta stubborn dog, and was pretty obnoxious on walks and when we have company over.  Since working with RD and having her train us on how to deal and understand James Bond, things have dramatically improved. I can’t recommend her enough.

This is as prevalent in young, green dogs as breaking is in older hunting dogs. Both problems stem from a lack of obedience. If a dog is well trained to heel, sit, stay and come, he’ll do nearly anything you want. The problem lies in the definition of “well trained.”

Let’s say you are teaching the puppy to sit. You use a toy or treat to lure him into a sitting position. The moment his bottom hits the floor you say “sit”, praise him and give a reward. From this the puppy learns that the word “Sit” means he parks his behind, and when he does so Mum is really pleased. This makes him eager to listen out for those cue words such as “Sit”, which translate in his mind as “Do this and get some easy pickings.”

You should NOT have to carry a bag of treats, or a remote control to be able to hang out with your dog without the dog getting into trouble or being annoying. For that to happen, you need to develop a trusting, respectful relationship with your dog. We can show you how.

Our dog walkers make life as easy as possible for you. Besides walks, they’ll take your dog to daycare, the vet or groomer, and even pick up dog food for you. Plus, you get permanent time slots so there’s no need to worry about scheduling each week.

Many people view crating a dog as cruel and it certainly can be if done incorrectly. But after effective crate training, the crate becomes a place they love, an incredibly useful tool for you to use for the management of your dog and a place they can use to get away from things when they wish.

As a person who makes regular visits to the gym and makes efforts to take long hikes with my 2 labs to get them some exercise, I can’t say enough good things about the boot camps and training that Hustle-n-Heel is providing. It really is a great workout, very entertaining, and quite motivating. …

Mental Stimulation: Just like sending a kid to school, training helps your Lab get much-needed mental mojo. Without it, you may notice the destructive signs of boredom. However, with daily training, they will get mental stimulation so they don’t feel the need to rearrange your furniture or redecorate your house with pillow feathers.

If you run into trouble, go back a few steps If you’re training your dog to do something new and you stop making progress, you may have increased the difficulty of the skill too quickly. Similarly, if you’re practicing a behavior your dog hasn’t performed in a while and she seems a little rusty, she may need some help remembering what you want her to do. If you run into training challenges like these, just refresh your dog’s memory by making the skill a little easier for a few repetitions. Go back to a step that you know your dog can successfully perform, and practice that for a while before trying to increase difficulty again.

When duck hunting, wait until you have several ducks on the water before you send your pup to retrieve. Unless wind or current is carrying off the ducks, it won’t hurt them to float for a half hour. If you are shooting doves, pick up the short, easy ones yourself. Let your pup sit for 10-15 minutes before he is sent for the difficult retrieves. Labradors love to play and can be quite energetic, both as puppies and adult dogs. They aim to please their owner and surrounding members of the family. They need lots of exercise to continue to be happy and healthy animals. Being intelligent beyond that of most dogs, they are one of the best breeds to have with children in the home. To keep having an obedient Labrador, it’s time to start puppy training. The initial part of Lab puppy training involves getting into the daily swing of things. Knowing where his food and water dishes are is a great place to start. Following that will be learning when he eats, when and where he sleeps, puppy potty training and what toys belong to him, and not you. Also needed is clarity in what is expected of your Labrador, and what is not acceptable. It is very important to use clear and concise commands. Before  dog training starts, you have to consider the training method you intend to use. This method needs to be consistent, so making the decision is one that requires some research. Many professional animal trainers use what’s called positive reinforcement. This philosophy believes that animals are much better behaved and easier to train when they’re earning rewards and praise than if they’re being punished. Punishment and negative reinforcement training has actually been proven to cause aggression and unwanted behaviors. One common tool used in positive reinforcement training is the clicker.  It’s a small hand held device which makes a clicking sound when pressed.  It can be found at most pet supply stores for a couple bucks.  The purpose of the clicker is to mark the correct behavior with a sound.  More info on clicker training. It’s more consistent than a word or phrase from the owner and faster which means it’s easier for your dog to understand when they’ve performed the correct behavior.  Follow the click with a reward, like a tasty treat, and you’re off to a great start.

These programs are designed for the client who loves the idea of sending their furry kids off to bootcamp and having them return home with the equivalency of a masters degree in doggie manners. This gives the clients a huge jump start in being able to lead their dogs around severe distractions.

There are many reasons why dogs display inappropriate behaviors. Understanding the source of the problems and making the appropriate changes is the key to turning them around. We address all contributing factors, showing you how to avoid and redirect unwanted behaviors such as:

If you want to improve communication with your puppy, you can improve upon your own body language. For example, crouching down with arms opened out is a welcome sign while towering over him and staring is a sign of threat.

Essentially your Labrador can only become what you train them to be, so training must be seen as a part of your every day lives together and the process through which you guide your dog to live a happy, safe and fulfilling life.

Lessons end with the trainer assigning customized homework based on your dog’s areas of concern. You’ll also be able to ask questions about anything and everything related to your dog. You can even contact your trainer after the session for no extra charge.

Matt is not big on books and unfortunately had a dearth of literary learning. He is a visual learner, a hands-on learner who works best by actually doing a task. Luckily he has a really good teacher who thinks of ways to meet each student’s needs equitably. One such example of this is when Matt’s teacher assigns him to starting a business and keeping records of profit and loss. A satisfactory assignment will mean an extra math credit for gun-shy math Matt.

“obedience training at home |dog training leads”

We took a wrong turn somewhere in the evolution of training and now go about the retrieving and steadying processes in a totally illogical manner. We take a young dog and give him hundreds of retrieves with no restraint. For the first thousand retrieves, we encourage the dog to take off at will after the falling dummy. Then, after we have him well trained to break, we change the rules and decide to make him steady—which requires a certain amount of punishment to counteract the breaking behavior we have just trained.

The dog can repeat the skills learned in basic training through advanced classes. The obedience training becomes more complex. The dog learns training while off a leash and also learns commands such as coming when being called from a distance. Specialized classes may include training for therapy dogs and search and rescue dogs.

It’s very important to keep any training ‘game based’ and very short, just 1 to 3 minutes max. They have short attention spans and you don’t want to teach them to dislike training by making it hard and stressful.

I just started using this place as a Doggie Daycare for my 1 yr old English Bulldog named Biggie.  I was EXTREMELY apprehensive about putting him in daycare not because he’s crazy..because I’m crazy..crazy about him!

The Instructors will set up unique courses each week for teams to run and work on all four elements (weather permitted for exteriors and vehicles) at all levels.  The class will concentrate on the introduction of distraction odors, blank rooms, detailing, advanced handling techniques, and extended searches.  The class is run seminar style where all dogs are crated when it is not their turn to work so owners will need to bring their dogs crate.

The longer you wait, the longer it takes to fix the issues your having, which can end up costing you more in the long run. Not only is it harder to fix the issues with the dog, but you also leave yourself open to lawsuits, should you have an aggressive dog or a dog with behavior issue. Dog training is always cheaper than a lawsuit … Don’t take a chance … Dayton Dog Trainer can fix your dog!

Your puppy will learn very quickly and respond to love and affection as well as rewards. Obedience training will help build a lasting bond between the two of you and you’ll be rewarded with a happy, well-trained dog.

So don’t look at obedience training as a chore. Instead, see it as a wonderful opportunity to motivate your dog, have fun, and build his confidence. In the process, he’ll become well-mannered and his good behavior will be a credit to you.

Dogs learn by association, so if your puppy does something good, reward him. Then the action is much more likely to be repeated. But the reward must be linked to the action, so he must be rewarded quickly, within a second or two. The reward itself can be a few kibbles of puppy food or praise, or both.

Take safety precautions if your puppy bites. If you’re starting a training program with the help of a qualified trainer, consider muzzling your puppy with a basket muzzle. Your puppy will quickly learn to stop nipping or biting with the help of the muzzle, but muzzling is not recommended if you don’t have a clear understanding of the training approach and goals. If the muzzle isn’t introduced and used properly, your puppy can actually become more dangerous to people, especially those trying to put the muzzle on the puppy.

Your dog is a lifetime companion. Building a positive relationship will reap lasting benefits in the future. Trusting your best friend to an inexperienced, fly-by-night dog trainer can cause more harm than help. Group training courses tend to be cramped and overcrowded where the trainer is unable to give you the personal attention you require! Successful dog training requires full participation of the dog, their human family, and the trainer working together and building trusting relationship.
