Blanka is studying for a Diploma in Advanced Canine Behaviour with the British College of Canine Studies. She is passionate about animal welfare and her experience of working in an animal re-homing centre has shown her how too many dogs need re-homing due to avoidable issues. She volunteered for the Dogs Trust Dogs Schools in Bristol and Dorset before joining the Dorset team as Coach, and is enthusiastic about sharing how the right approach can make a positive difference to the life of dogs and their families.

The most important part of training your dog is teaching her that it pays to do things you like. But your dog also needs to learn that it doesn’t pay to do things you don’t like. Fortunately, discouraging unwanted behavior doesn’t have to involve pain or intimidation. You just need to make sure that behavior you dislike doesn’t get rewarded. Most of the time, dog motivations aren’t mysterious. They simply do what works! Dogs jump up on people, for example, because people pay attention to them as a result. They can learn not to jump up if we ignore them when they jump up instead. It can be as simple as turning away or staring at the sky when your dog jumps up to greet or play with you. As soon as she sits, you can give her the attention she craves. If you stick to this plan, your dog will learn two things at once. Doing something you like (sitting) reliably works to earn what she wants (attention), and doing things you don’t like (jumping up) always results in the loss of what she wants.
One of the more common places we hear of often is the Petsmart dog training company. We have heard of people being asked to leave the Petsmart dog training course because their dog was too hyper or too rambunctious. Well, isn’t that why you are there? Isn’t that what you need help with? DDT is a lot different from the Petsmart dog training company.
Once your dog consistently moves away from the first treat and gives you eye contact when you say the command, you’re ready to take it up a notch. For this, use two different treats http://rentabilisermapassion.org/comment-construire-une-entreprise-de-formation-en-ligne-rentable-les-strategies-en-ligne-pour-faire-croitre-votre-entreprise/ one that’s just all right and one that’s a particularly good smelling and tasty favorite for your pup.

The Labrador is the breed I most commonly work with, and I am alarmed at the trends I see. It has become the general custom to force-fetch train every dog. This corrects any tendency to drop birds, mouth birds or run off to the bushes with birds. It also masks the genetic tendencies toward those behaviors.
He becomes steady, with little effort and no punishment. Additionally, he develops into a calm, pleasant hunting companion. The same principle applies to the older dog in hunting situations. If you send the dog immediately every time a bird falls, then you are training him to break. Make his life easier by making him wait.
Labradors were bred in a cool climate. They really do feel the heat, so if you live in a hot climate try to do everything you can to make your dog comfortable. Provide plenty of cold drinking water, shade and cool airflow.
Responsible dog owners have control, and in having control they and their dog actually have more freedom. You can take your canine companion more places. The dog gets a much richer life accompanying you on wonderful adventures because they know how to behave in public.

Hi Pippa. Have a 5 minth old lab. Read all tge awesome posts. Pup was introduced to “his spot” on day one. We take him out very frequently, as he “rings bell” on bk door. Sometimes WAY to often, ie twice in half hour, to wee. Even often, he aways does go wee. Sometines, regardless of how frequent, he starts going on way to the “spot “. 1st, my husband feels hes being spiteful, because “he knows where his spot is”, is he? 2nd, how can we stop him from going “on the way”, and wait to get to the spot.
A responsible owner has control over their dog, because the dog respects them and sees them as their leader. This isn’t a difficult skill for dogs to comprehend, as they do this naturally in the wild. Dog packs have a very clearly organized pack structure where each member knows their place in the pack. If you throw a group of dogs together, you can see this pack order naturally develop.

Mny thanks for the site. In India pups are always provided at 40 days as a standard. I wish i’d read your site earlier and followed your advice on taking our lab put at 8 weeks. He came to us at 40 days and is now going to turn 12 weeks tomorrow. We love him to death and is spoilt silly. He is the new baby in the family and asks for attention when he doesnt get it like when we have to leave him some time and go downstairs. He is super chatty and tries to communicate all the time. The problem though is he is a barky and neighbours arent taking well to all the noise. Am not sure if there is anything i can do about it. Please help.
Although referring to all breeds in general and not purely Labradors, for those of you that love to watch and not read, the series of dog training videos on www.dogstrust.org.uk are well worth a look.

The owners are rad. They are young Philly entrepreneurs who are sincere about providing a positive environment for dogs whose parent(s) works. They get our domesticated dogs too, i.e. that they are pack animals that nevertheless need their belly’s rubbed.
To help your dog know when barking is acceptable, you simply need to teach him that he may bark until he is told to stop. “Stop barking” should be considered as a command for obedience rather than a telling off.
