“become a dog trainer -how to train a labrador retriever”

Does your puppy bite? If so, you’ll need to quickly break this cycle without breaking your puppy’s spirit. The good news is that there are lots of things you can do to signal that biting needs to stop, all while reinforcing positive behavior in your puppy. Once you train your puppy not to bite, you can move on to more fun things, like teaching him tricks.

Our Training Camp program is a 14-day Camp that addresses basic obedience, puppy manners, leash work, place training and general manners. The program is open to dogs 5 months and older. The gist of all this is that the average hunter is low in dog-training skills, which is as it should be. The community of dog experts should be promoting the selective breeding of a dog that the average hunter can train and enjoy. We should not be breeding a dog with a bundle of genetically transmitted behavioral tendencies that make him difficult to train into a good working dog. The average hunter should not have to get a Ph.D. in dog training in order to come up with a dog that is pleasant to hunt with and pleasant to live with.

When you arrive to class we ask that you keep your distance from other owners and dogs, we will guide you over to your personal ‘pod’ which will be a small area reserved for you and your dog. This will give your dogs the best chance to feel comfortable and calm at the start of class. Once everyone has settled in their own areas your coach will start the class, there will be some time set aside for practical training and discussing key messages. In puppy classes there will also be some time scheduled for socialising with other class members.

Biting during play is often due to over excitement. Try and control the play so he doesn’t become over excited. One way to do this is to play for 15 second bursts, where you set down toys and don’t interact again until the puppy is sitting attentively. This short ‘time out’ sessions stop him getting too revved up. Plus, if he does nip, stop the game immediately and leave the room. This sends out the message that if he bites, the game ends.

Wouldn’t it be great if your dog could find your keys or your cell phone? Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to hunt. This class focuses on teaching you how to encourage and develop your dog’s natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise. It’s a great class for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy.

Dogs older than five months can attend basic obedience classes that include hand signals and commands, according to Pawnation.com. Housebreaking, problem jumping and inappropriate barking may also be covered.

We recently have been adding to our selection of handout materials for trainers to give to their clients. While many of you probably c…reate your own handouts, you should take a look at what is available at a reasonable cost to help your clients remember what you teach them in class and so that you don’t need to spend time creating your own materials.

This may be a little off-topic but I can’t find any information on this anywhere else. Can I train my lab to tolerate increasing noise levels in our home with this reinforcement method? Gradually increasing his exposure to the noise until he is able to tolerate it in a relaxed state?

You may as well take advantage of this innocence, when they have no idea of what life is with no preconceived ideas, no habits formed or needing to be broken, to start training them to fit into the life that they will lead with the skills that they will need.

Love, love The Dog School. I know most the reviewers work from 9-5 and worry about their energetic pup at home. I would also consider it if you are at home or work at home as I do and it is too hot, cold, rainy or you are simply physically unable to give your energetic friend the exercise he craves (I’m 8 months pregnant so that’s me!) . My dog is a 16 month old golden doodle with lots of energy and after spending the day at the dog school yesterday he is still happy and calm from spending 9 hours getting his energy out. You don’t need an appointment either, just drop your pup off when he is driving you nuts and you are set!

Formal dog training has traditionally been delayed until 6 months of age. Actually, this juvenile stage is a very poor time to start. The dog is learning from every experience and delaying training means missed opportunities for the dog to learn how you would like him to behave. During the juvenile stage, the dog is beginning to solidify adult behavioral patterns and progresses through fear periods. Behaviors learned in puppyhood may need to be changed. In addition, anything that has already been learned or trained incorrectly will need to be undone and re-taught. Puppies are capable of learning much from an early age.

The Labrador is the breed I most commonly work with, and I am alarmed at the trends I see. It has become the general custom to force-fetch train every dog. This corrects any tendency to drop birds, mouth birds or run off to the bushes with birds. It also masks the genetic tendencies toward those behaviors.

“Socialization with other dogs, as well as humans, is an extremely important component of a dog’s development into a positive member of the family and a good citizen of society,” says Louise Murray, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM, director of medicine at ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York.

Unfortunately, our field trials—mainly because of increasing entries—have evolved over the years into elimination contests that evaluate skills that are of little importance in a hunting dog. These behaviors include lining, angle entries into water, pinpoint marking and precise handling at long distances. Gone by the wayside are line manners and obedience, as well as game-finding initiative.

Along with my cat, Village gave me a good deal of insight on how to communicate with clients and how to successfully run a kennel. I was also introduced to a myriad of dogs, young, old, trained, untrained, hyper, and super mellow. This exposure to so many dogs really helped me to define what traits I prefer in a dog and in May of 2017, I adopted my first dog (as an adult), Thunder. Thunder is an adult German Shepherd who is goofy and tends to over think things when he’s excited. Adopting him changed my life in more ways than I could explain. I grew up with a twelve pound chihuahua/pug mix, so adopting a 114# GSD was certainly a huge difference. I wasn’t prepared to manage such a large dog and I quickly found out that he is as strong as an ox. Before I knew it, Thunder was bolting out of doors and hauling me around when on a leash. My roommates told me the only way he could continue living with us was if I got him under control. I recalled seeing a Sit Means Sit booth at Village’s annual pet fair back in April and decided to look up the number on Google. I got in contact with Jimmy and we set up a free demo.

Anybody who is involved in the care of your dog is encouraged to come along to class, including children. Please bear in mind that your coaches will be talking to the class on a group level to teach you valuable key messages about behaviour, so it is important that anybody attending is able to listen quietly (if young children are attending it could be a good idea to bring something to keep them occupied with at these times). Let your coach know if you have any special requirements or will have more than 3 people attending with your dog, so that they can prepare and make sure there is enough space. To make sure you can concentrate on training your puppy, we would ask that you leave any other pets (including other dogs) at home.

Give us a call to set up your FREE introductory demo. We’ll customize a schedule for you. Just think how much fun it will be to walk along with a well-trained dog. Call or email Sit Means Sit Kansas City today!

Without question, training your dog should be a basic requirement for any owner. It strengthens your relationship, gives you both a better quality of life, and keeps your fur kid adored by everyone for his amazing, human-like good manners and entertaining party tricks.

Dog School LA is excited to bring a new “school” of thought to southern California.  Higher learning, for our pets with class.  A place of structure, a place of safety, and a place for our dogs to thrive.

I’ve had people respond to this question in several different ways.  There has been the enthusiastic crowd who is excited at the possibility of having a dog in the school.  There is the cautious group that is concerned about allergies, insurance and injuries.  The skeptics respond with a look that says, “You just want to bring your dog to school with you, don’t you?”  The fearful give you a pleading look and wide eyes.   There is a substantial amount of work and knowledge that needs to be in place before bringing a dog into a school. This website is dedicated to providing a foundation for professionals who want to start their own programs and a place for established programs to share best practices and the tried and true tools that support that work.
