There are a few different models that are used when having a dog work in a school setting.   The majority of this website was built using the model where the school professional is also the handler and the animal works primarily out of the same building.   Copper has additional training beyond basic therapy dog courses that is specific to working in a public school.  He works at the school 3 days a week.  I like this model because I can educate all the people in the building about behavior expectations when Copper is working. I also know the students that Copper works with.  There is more information about this under the How to Get Started tab.

Hi Kay, It is totally up to you. Most right handed people find it convenient to teach their dog to heel to the left, as it gives them the dominant hand free, but it’s entirely your decision. Best wishes, Lucy.

The responsibility to be a good canine citizen does not lie at the feet of the dog. It rests on the shoulders of their owners. Almost 100% of the time a dog creates havoc in someone’s life – unless that dog has some neurological impairment – the underlying cause of behavioral problems is their owner’s lack of participation in their training, socialization, and exercise requirements.

In-home dog training consists of weekly visits from a certified dog trainer. Your dog trainer will assess your dog’s specific learning style, and compose a training program based off your needs.  At the end of each training session, you will receive clearly defined homework and each lesson builds off the prior lesson.

Redirect your puppy’s attention using teething toys. When he has calmed down, gently talk to him and stroke him. Keep your hand away from his mouth. Start playing again and avoid getting the puppy excited. This time, use toys instead of your hands to get your puppy engaged. Start playing fetch, so that you are tossing toys away from you and using the puppy’s prey drive for positive fun. Playing with toys can be used as a training reward or break and keeps your hands away from the puppy’s teeth.[5]

I toke and will remain to take my Cocker Spaniel. creer une sa twists and squirms around, like puppys do, but she is the love of my life. They toke excellent care, making sure she wasn’t too excited, gave her …an excellent bath, trimmed her perfectly, at other locations they didn’t have the patients to trim her face which in turn caused ear infections, at TEXAS ALLBREED grooming, they got everything trimmed and also saved those long eye lashes. I am so happy with the results!! See More

Your dog lives with a family, in a home. This is where he misbehaves most often so this is where dog behavior training is most effective. Dogs learn by association. It’s more the fact ‘as soon as you get them home’ and 8 weeks happens to be the age at which it’s recommended a puppy is taken from it’s mother and litter-mates to go to a new home. So owners don’t get their puppies before this age.

RD was recommended to us by the rescue (One Tail at a Time) where we got our dog, Ruby. We knew we were going to have to work with Ruby a lot on multiple issues. She had been in multiple shelters and …although she was well potty trained and liked her crate, she had not been through a lot of normal puppy and people socialization. We were pretty desperate for help and RD brought it. She was able to get us a training within the same day as Ruby’s initial evaluation because her schedule was free. We saw a complete change in Ruby after one visit. After working with her a couple weeks, we had RD back and she was able to bring a couple dogs so we could get Ruby used to walking and being around other dogs in our home. Each time, we learn more about dog behavior and how we can behave to help Ruby progress. RD’s manner is direct and kind and she is always reassuring. She helped us recognize the difference between puppy behavior and breed behavior. We’re so happy to have met RD and feel more and more confident in helping Ruby be happy and healthy. See More

Drop your dog off with Partners between 8 and 4 pm, Monday to Friday, for daycare and a little training. Depending on your dogs personality we can also let them run and play in our playgroup sessions.

All dogs are not the same, so we vary our approach based on each dog’s personality and temperament and what will work for that dog. We also vary the dog behavior training to suit the family’s specific needs and lifestyle, the dog’s environment and what YOU do or don’t want from your dog.

Imagine teaching your dog basic skills: sit, down, come, stay, and loose leash walking in a beautiful and fun setting. We will address problem behaviors like jumping up, leash pulling, and play biting to make your dog a good family member. Our positive, reward-based program is a great bonding experience for you and your dog under the lovely shady trees at Plantation Heritage Park. We incorporate games and fun contests during class, too! Join us on Saturday mornings for more fun than humans should be allowed! Class times, required registration forms, and more information are available at Oh Behave.

With group classes, in-home private lessons, behavior modification programs for both dogs and cats, plus evening, daytime and weekend hours, it couldn’t be more convenient. All dogs can learn, and we take pride in making it an enjoyable experience for all involved.

The foundation of Tarheel Canine’s Training System is an understanding of behavior and canine temperament which is explained  in Tarheel Canine’s proprietary training manual and Jerry Bradshaw’s  book, Controlled Aggression published by Lulu Press (http://www.lulu.com/content/2317473), both are provided to students with their equipment upon enrollment, as well as lectures which cover all key areas of training in the Tarheel Canine Training System.  Through extensive practical work and application of the theory we then show the student when and where to apply the use of key training equipment. This includes using leashes, training collars, long lines, reward toys, modern electronic training collars (in both low level stimulation and the Tarheel System), application of BSD™ Behavior Shaping Devices for training detector dogs for narcotics and explosives detection, how to use various sleeves and grip training equipment including bite suits for sport, Personal Protection and Police K9 Training.

Sometimes it’s easier to train your puppy (or adult dog) when you can see the correct training techniques in action. I recommend these dog training videos, which are based on respect and leadership. [read more]
