Well you won’t know for sure, but the clock will give you a good idea. If your puppy needs to wee every 30 minutes, then its a pretty good bet that his bladder is starting to get full if his last wee was more than twenty minutes ago.

The most important part of training your dog is teaching her that it pays to do things you like. But your dog also needs to learn that it doesn’t pay to do things you don’t like. Fortunately, discouraging unwanted behavior doesn’t have to involve pain or intimidation. You just need to make sure that behavior you dislike doesn’t get rewarded. Most of the time, dog motivations aren’t mysterious. They simply do what works! Dogs jump up on people, for example, because people pay attention to them as a result. They can learn not to jump up if we ignore them when they jump up instead. It can be as simple as turning away or staring at the sky when your dog jumps up to greet or play with you. As soon as she sits, you can give her the attention she craves. If you stick to this plan, your dog will learn two things at once. Doing something you like (sitting) reliably works to earn what she wants (attention), and doing things you don’t like (jumping up) always results in the loss of what she wants.

Picture this: You are excited about bringing home a new Labrador puppy. You set his bed and place him something delicious to grub on. After that, you cuddle him, tickle his furry tummy and let him run loose around the house. But, wait. What happens then after you let him loose?

Dog trainers use their knowledge of animal behavior to help people learn how to train their dogs. People most often bring their dogs to trainers because they want to teach them basic obedience skills or correct behavioral problems, but some specialized trainers prepare dogs for roles as police dogs, guide dogs, or therapy dogs.

“Respect Training” is the dog training method I use and recommend for training Labrador Retrievers. 2.  They do take the dogs on walks for potty breaks but the dogs also can go on the floor at daycare.  I was also concerned about my pooch peeing on the floor and thinking he can do that when he comes home.  Definitely not the case.  No issues whatsoever.

It’s very important to keep training tasks simple, setting your puppy up to succeed while avoiding failure. This means going very slowly and not expecting too much. Having many small wins is very encouraging. Many failures are frustrating and stressful and can kill a puppy’s enthusiasm for training and learning.

The best way to potty train a puppy depends on your lifestyle and the amount of time you have to leave your puppy unsupervised. Read through the two methods to discover which is the right one for you and your family.

RD was absolutely fabulous with my dog Goose (and I). Within an hour of time together she had helped correct unwanted behavior and life was looking soooo much less stressful again! The plus side was that she taught us how to communicate, consider our energy and no treats were needed!  We are going to work together again to master a few more challenges.

You do not necessarily need to train in a set session daily. Rather, integrate these tasks throughout the day. A goal to strive for is at least 15 minutes of training every day. These can be short 5 minute sessions spread throughout the day. Try to have all family members ask your puppy to do these tasks. Remember to try to train in every room of your house. You want your puppy to “sit,” “lie down,” and “stay” everywhere, not just in the training location. Practice in all locations you would like your puppy to behave and feel comfortable and relaxed in the future.

Our dog training programs are simple and effective, and focus on just a handful of commands. We teach you to have your dog lie down and stay, to come when called, to go away when told, to follow, to heel, to wait, and to jump. Using this handful of commands, we are able to shape the dog’s behaviors and habits so that being calm and submissive become the dog’s default. Once these are in place, we then focus on more involved or specific training needs. The training is faster and easier because we have already put in place a pattern of obedience and trust on or off leash.

This is as prevalent in young, green dogs as breaking is in older hunting dogs. Both problems stem from a lack of obedience. If a dog is well trained to heel, sit, stay and come, he’ll do nearly anything you want. The problem lies in the definition of “well trained.”

I have a 3 yr old choc lab who is very well behaved normally, however in the last 2 weeks or so he has started mounting other dogs when off lead. His recall is good but hardly ever stops humping the dogs when called off. He has never done this before, can it be a sudden new behaviour or maybe a medical condition causing this? ( ive heard it could sometimes be from urinary tract infection?) Some advice would be great as my vets aren’t brilliant.

Training classes for young puppies are also an excellent way to socialize your new puppy to a variety of people, dogs, and other stimuli in a controlled environment. In addition, you will learn how to prevent problems before they can begin, or deal with them as they emerge, rather than having to find a way to correct problems that have already developed. Your puppy might also make some new friends of the same age. You could then visit these friends (or vice versa) with your puppy for social play and exercise sessions. Since the primary socialization period for dogs ends by 3 months of age, puppy socialization classes are most valuable for puppies 8 weeks of age and older. If all puppies in the class have had initial vaccinations, are healthy and parasite free, the health risks are low and the potential benefits are enormous. Discuss the location of classes in your area and when to start them with your veterinarian.
