Imagine your dog being calm, peaceful, happy, friendly and obedient – without treats or a prong collar or an e-collar. Imagine your dog walking peacefully next to or behind you as you walk down a crowded street with people, traffic, and even other dogs and animals passing by. No lunging, pulling or troublemaking. Imagine your dog lying peacefully by your side as you enjoy a meal at an outdoor cafe while strangers pass all around. Yes … your dog!
Reactive Dogs: For the safety of our staff and clients, we do not allow reactive or aggressive dogs in group classes. Reactive dogs will be removed from class and you will NOT receive a refund. Feel free to contact us and discuss other alternatives if your dog is reactive.
Unlike other schools, the Ohio State K-9 College uses only a Master Trainer to perform all of its work. He is a firm believer in the ancient relationship of respect between teacher and student. The Master Trainer knows he can only help students who are willing to learn and cannot help those who are unwilling to learn. Therefore, please take the time necessary to carefully read this website. Throughout his entire career, he has never found a student who truly loves their dog that isn’t willing to devote themselves to this goal.
A puppy isn’t just able to learn, they learn at a very fast pace so you should take advantage of this short window of opportunity, especially because you can prevent many bad habits or behaviors from ever developing.
Do you still remember everything you learned in high school? Of course not! Over time, we forget things if we don’t keep them fresh in our minds. Dogs are the same way. In order to keep your pupil sharp, you need to dust off those training exercises every few days.
There are a few different models that are used when having a dog work in a school setting. The majority of this website was built using the model where the school professional is also the handler and the animal works primarily out of the same building. Copper has additional training beyond basic therapy dog courses that is specific to working in a public school. He works at the school 3 days a week. I like this model because I can educate all the people in the building about behavior expectations when Copper is working. I also know the students that Copper works with. There is more information about this under the How to Get Started tab.
In our Basic Obedience Class, we will teach your dog voice and hand commands. You begin with two – once a week 1/2 hour private sessions. Next, you and your dog attend two – once a week – small group classes and then you join a large group class which meets once a week for 3 months.
Teaching your dog to reliably follow your commands is almost as important as giving them adequate food, shelter and water. It’s a necessary skill that they must develop for us to live in harmony together.
Beyond independent study, dog trainers can further their training by completing a course with a school that educates trainers, or by taking on an apprenticeship with an experienced trainer. The Association of Professional Dog Trainers(APDT) does not endorse any specific schools, but recommends finding a training program that thoroughly explores the history of dog training as well as principles of animal learning and dog behavior. Programs that teach trainers how to design classes, create instructional materials, and work with clients can be beneficial as well.
Hi Kay, It is totally up to you. Most right handed people find it convenient to teach their dog to heel to the left, as it gives them the dominant hand free, but it’s entirely your decision. Best wishes, Lucy.
“Socialization with other dogs, as well as humans, is an extremely important component of a dog’s development into a positive member of the family and a good citizen of society,” says Louise Murray, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM, director of medicine at ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York.
Set in Copper Creek, Michigan that I couldn’t find on a map (though I found many retailers and other entities with Copper Creek in their name), Sled Dog School engages anyone who loves animals, kids, adventure, and a touch of how will this resolve (or will it?) in a story that includes Matt, his younger sister Lily, a math class assignment, and a heartening outcome. At least in the past, Michigan was major Copper Country, and it feels as if Copper Creek may be in the northern part of the state, possibly in the Upper Peninsula. We get sled dogs teams in a rural residential area, parents raising free range kids, a family living off the grid. An outhouse, no electric, no central heating, and enough snow for dog teams? Yes!

Getting a new puppy to live with an elderly dog can sometimes be good, sometimes be bad. It’s a lot like asking 80 year old grandparents to live with a toddler: Some will get all cantankerous, short-fused and hate the child, others will get a new lease of life, perk up and ‘feel young again’. Sometimes the elderly dog can retreat a bit and not want anything to do with the puppy, sometimes a ‘parenting instinct’ can kick in and they kind of adopt it. It depends a lot on the elderly dogs personality.
These programs are designed for the trainers to show the client how to train their own dogs. These success based programs give the client the tools necessary to be able to lead their dog through the challenges with which most dog owners struggle.
That’s why we now offer a walking service and overnight boarding. We want to be there for your dog (and you) 24/7, whatever and whenever your needs are. We’ve always felt like we were a second family to the dogs who come to school, and now we can be.
Our instructors are student focused. We want to make sure you get what you need as an individual to be successful. Not every student needs the same teaching method either. Jerry Bradshaw, before becoming a dog trainer, was a college professor, so education is the highest calling in his opinion. Breaking down complex tasks and teaching concepts clearly is a priority. All of the instructors at Tarheel are required to teach in this way. Our trainers keep an intensive schedule to keep students working and dogs advancing throughout the day. Each training day for students is 10 hours long M-F. Instructors work on 4 day shifts. Some M-Th, and some T-F, so students can avail themselves of a maximum amount of training time by coming all week long. Students are also welcome to come to our Tarheel Canine Protection Sports Association Club on Sunday mornings quelle societe ouvrir the trainers work their own competition dogs. Students will rotate throughout the week among the instructors getting some different perspectives, and learning from a variety of experiences.

“Leave it! / Drop it!” The first command is important if you see your dog going for that cigarette butt on the ground. The second command is for when they’re already chewing on it. (Related: How to train your lab to drop and leave items.)
Dayton Dog Trainer is Dayton’s premier, in-home dog trainer! We offer many dog training services in all of Montgomery County and surrounding areas. No matter your location … our trainers will travel anywhere in the world. As you will find … most of the training centers out there, want you to come to them. Not only do we offer group classes, but we also come to you for in-home dog obedience training and behavior issues, including aggression. We have even heard of dogs being booted from one of those training programs, because they failed to conform … which makes no sense to us considering the trainer of those establishments are supposed to help your dog become obedient. We receive many calls from clients who have already been through a training program, that didn’t work out.
