Biting during play is often due to over excitement. Try and control the play so he doesn’t become over excited. One way to do this is to play for 15 second bursts, where you set down toys and don’t interact again until the puppy is sitting attentively. This short ‘time out’ sessions stop him getting too revved up. Plus, if he does nip, stop the game immediately and leave the room. This sends out the message that if he bites, the game ends.

Getting a new puppy to live with an elderly dog can sometimes be good, sometimes be bad. It’s a lot like asking 80 year old grandparents to live with a toddler: Some will get all cantankerous, short-fused and hate the child, others will get a new lease of life, perk up and ‘feel young again’. Sometimes the elderly dog can retreat a bit and not want anything to do with the puppy, sometimes a ‘parenting instinct’ can kick in and they kind of adopt it. It depends a lot on the elderly dogs personality.
Does the instructor communicate well? Does she listen carefully and respond clearly? Does she offer help when someone has trouble getting a dog to respond? Can she get her own dog and the dogs in her class to do what she wants without resorting to extreme measures?
The time it takes to train a dog varies according to the dog and what you’re attempting to train. Housetraining a puppy usually only takes a few weeks, if adhering to a proven training system with a typically intelligent puppy. Beginner behavioral or “manners” training courses typically run 6 weeks. Obedience training typically takes 2-3 sessions per new skill—if you are practicing with your dog multiple times a day in between sessions, and if your dog is young.
Thanks for the great site and tips. We are looking at rescuing a seven month old lab. She has been at a very great and friendly kennel since she was three months old and her owner abandoned her there. I know the kennel has been working with her on basic commands and some crate training. I was wondering what tips you might have for us and our situation.
