Prospective dog trainers can get their training in a variety of ways. There are no college degree programs that prepare people for careers in dog training, but some find specific courses helpful in understanding the science behind animal behavior. A course in psychology, for example, may provide some insight into principles of animal learning like reinforcement, punishment, motivation, and conditioning. Dog trainers can also learn through reading books by authorities in the field and from online resources, such as the Animal Behavior Resources Institute.

The founding teachers of Dog School Los Angeles are a team of educated, dog loving professionals who respect each other just as much as the dogs we work with.  Working together over the years had proven to be highly valuable whenever we had the chance.  So naturally, we decided optimize our value in dog care abilities and work together all the time.  Trust and respect are in balance within our faculty.  And while there are many different career paths out there, this one in particular fulfills us most.

There are many techniques available for managing biting because not all dogs or people respond to the same method. If you or other members of your family are in physical danger or fearful of the puppy, seek the help of an experienced Certified Dog Trainer or Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (a veterinary specialist) immediately.[12]The longer the behavior continues unchecked, the greater the chance of escalation and injury.

Work on only one part of a skill at a time Many of the skills we want our dogs to learn are complex. For instance, if you want to train a solid sit-stay, you’ll need to work on teaching your dog that she should stay in a sitting position until you release her (duration), she should stay while you move away from her (distance), and she should stay while distracting things are going on around her (distraction). You’ll probably both get frustrated if you try to teach her all of these things at the same time. Instead, start with just one part of the skill and, when your dog has mastered that, add another part. For example, you can work on duration first. When your dog can sit-stay for a few minutes in a quiet place with no distractions while you stand right next to her, start training her to stay while you move away from her. While you focus on that new part of the skill, go back to asking your dog to stay for just a few seconds again. When your dog can stay while you move around the room, slowly build up the duration of the stay again. Then you can add the next part-training in a more distracting environment. Again, when you make the skill harder by adding distraction, make the other parts-duration and distance-easier for a little while. If you work on all the parts of a complex skill separately before putting them together, you’ll set your dog up to succeed.

At first training begin in designated sessions throughout the day, with a variety of family members. All rewards should be saved for these training sessions. Over time however, you should begin to ask your puppy to perform the tasks at other times.

Reward good behavior. Always praise good behavior with lots of gentle love and cuddles. Use rewards effectively to reinforce good behavior. For example, if your dog successfully responds to your request to drop a toy, say, “yes!,” or “good boy!” Verbal rewards work well when you’re playing and may have your hands full of toys.[8]

Dog aggression can be terrifying, stressful and can cause legal problems. Are you at the end of your rope? Are you about to give up on your dog? Or, do you feel like your dog is fine and everyone else is the problem? Learn about the steps you should take, to get your dog back on track. Dogs are not born with aggression … so it is very possible to fix your dog or at least help the situation.

It’s very important to keep training tasks simple, setting your puppy up to succeed while avoiding failure. This means going very slowly and not expecting too much. Having many small wins is very encouraging. Many failures are frustrating and stressful and can kill a puppy’s enthusiasm for training and learning.

RD is amazing! We had two sessions at my home and after the first one, my 10 month old rescue pup was no longer afraid to get in and ride in the car, or go on walks. She taught me how to speak dog and… be the alpha so my pup can feel confident and secure with me. We are still working on separation anxiety, but all of RDs advice has been successful so far. She is definitely a dog whisperer. I’d recommend her to anyone! See More

One of the most frequent complaints of pet parents is that their dogs “just won’t listen.” But put yourself in your dog’s shoes for a moment. If someone was constantly chattering away in a foreign language that you’d never heard before, how long would you pay attention? Probably not for very long-because you simply wouldn’t be able to understand what the foreign speaker was trying to communicate.

You can probably think of others.   In addition to distractions there are other factors of difficulty in any skill,   factors like the duration of the task,  the distance between the dog and handler when the command is given,  and so on.

I have a 6th month male lab & 8yr old. My 6th month does not get the message to go to the door to bark or cry that he needs to go out to potty. I am the one trained to keep putting him out to go. How do you train them to bark to go out? I have not tried a bell yet. Also he will poop in my dining room when he needs to go & sometimes pee. Can’t seem to get it across to him. I tried letting him smell the poop, swat on butt & tell him no he is bad. That was a waste of time, did it the next day. Help

Now that I’ve experienced other dog daycares I love Dog School even more.  In our new home, Austin TX, many of the dog daycares used crates for a large portion of the day.  I loved the fact that she could run around free at Dog School all day if she wanted to.  We miss this place!!!

Having a trained dog isn’t the same as having a balanced dog, but if your dog knows a few basic commands, it can be helpful when tackling problem behaviors — existing ones or those that may develop in the future.

Owners will provide a small, zip lock bag of their dogs favorite treats per day of school. (We recommend high value treats such as, hot dogs, dried liver, sausage, meatballs, cheese, or chicken. For dogs who’s weight we are monitoring, we can use their kibble as their reward)

It is important to be consistent when training your Labrador. This implies that you should stick to one word commands and follow the same set of hand signals while training. Also follow a routine for the purpose. For example, you can train him for an hour a day, three days a week. This makes it easy for him to grasp things quickly and respond to your commands. Also, it is essential to make the learning process fun for your Lab by taking breaks in between training, and by rewarding obedience from your pup, with his favorite treat.

The most important tip in obedience training is to let your Labrador know that you are the Alpha person, that is, you are the leader. There are several ways to achieve this. One way is to feed your Labrador at regular intervals and not when it wants to. When you take your dog for a walk, make sure to not let the dog decide which direction to go. It is essential to exercise control over your dog to ascertain that the dog is eager to obey your commands. Taking good care of your dog will help it build its trust in you. Once your dog learns to trust you, it will accept you as the leader and will be more than happy to please you.

Explore the nature paths and common areas of beautiful Markham Park, while learning  basic handling skills, such as loose leash walking, wait, come and polite greeting. Great exercise for you and your dog. The cost for this one-hour session is $20 per person (not per dog). Pre-registration by phone is required; call 954-349-5969.
