Regardless of which method and techniques you use, effective dog training boils down to one thing-controlling the consequences of your dog’s behavior. If you want to influence the way your dog behaves, you need to:
This can be one of the more difficult commands in dog obedience training. Why? Because the position is a submissive posture. You can help by keeping training positive and relaxed, particularly with fearful or anxious dogs.
‘Look’ has the dog focus on your face, and is a great way of distracting him from situations where he might be fearful or run off. Hold a treat by the dog’s nose and then slowly raise the treat until it’s resting on the bridge of your nose. The pup will watch the treat and end up appearing to stare into your eyes. Say “Look”. Have him stare at the treat for 10 seconds and then give it to him. Slowly build up the amount of time he has to look before he gets the treat.
The version of the vaccine must cover the H3N2 strain. If your dog has never had this vaccine, please note that it is administered in 2 doses, 3 – 5 weeks apart. After that, they should get an annual booster.

RD was great. I was really nervous about the awkwardness of having a stranger come in and make my sweet little guy anxious. But she was really nice and a total professional. There was no weirdness at …all beyond the first couple of minutes, and she gave me some super helpful tips to help encourage better behaviors in my dog when we are faced with challenges/distractions while walking. She even used her time to turn our meeting into an impromptu training session and we got in some walking practice on that same day. Thanks so much and we will definitely be scheduling again soon! See More
I married my college sweetheart in 2013 and we have since collected a couple cats, a dog, and two horses on our small farm. I continued my animal-based education at The University of Tennessee and earned an Animal Science degree in 2015. In the spring of 2017, I fostered and finish-trained a service dog for a disabled veteran as a volunteer. Shortly after, our roommate adopted a large German Shepherd who had no manners, but a sweet personality. With me being occupied because of the service dog training, my roommate contacted Sit Means Sit for help in dealing with her big guy. Jimmy Archuleta came out to the house to do a demonstration. We signed up and throughout the process I was continually impressed with how quickly and efficiently the training progressed. I have had a blast with the program and look forward to helping many others with their pups!

Explore the nature paths and common areas of beautiful Markham Park, while learning basic handling skills, such as loose leash walking, wait, come and polite greeting. Great exercise for you and your dog. We will hike through secluded wooded trails, as well as utilize common areas for opportunities to socialize your dog and work with distractions. A different path is taken each class. Some trails are rugged and you must wear appropriate shoes, and carry necessities such as water for you and your dog. Walking shoes and a back-pack are recommended. Dogs and puppies of all ages are welcome, but must have proof of rabies. Your dog must be friendly to people and other dogs. If your dog is not appropriate for this class, you may participate without him, and learn handling skills you can then implement at home. People without dogs are welcome. Children must be 12 years or older. The cost for this one-hour session is $20 per person (not per dog). Pre-registration by phone is required; call 954-349-5969.
This is a comprehensive program that will cover all aspects of Police K9 Training. This curriculum provides the student the ability to train dogs for police patrol, detection, trailing, obedience and agility. This course prepares you to train police dogs and it also teaches you how to instruct the officers that handle them.
Method 1 – is the quickest way of house training a dog if you are starting with a puppy. With method 2, you have to train him twice, once to use the pads indoors, and again when it comes to learning to pee outside.
If a dog doesn’t meet expectations at the end of a training course, it is as likely to be related to the training course or the pet owner as the dog. A recommended next step would be to carefully research more training methods and local trainers to find a program that is better suited to your dog. Another one is to consider whether lack of commitment, inconsistent at-home practice, or an inconsistent discipline/reward system may have undermined the training program.
Basic obedience training is an essential part of responsible dog ownership. It helps to establish a bond between you and your Labrador and makes him/her a welcome part of the family and in the neighborhood. In urban areas, there are obedience training clubs that offers classes where you and your dog can learn the fundamentals of basic obedience training. These classes can range in scope from puppy socializing to advanced training for obedience competition. Early training and consistency are the keys to having a well-behaved dog. If you plan to hunt your Labrador, basic obedience training is essential.
We generally characterize these dogs as “soft” and tend to give them away as pets when they flunk the electric-collar program. Thus we are tending to remove from the breeding pool dogs that exhibit this valuable trait. This trait of “cooperative nature” is of extreme importance to the average hunter, because the average hunter is usually quite unfamiliar with dog training.
One of the more common places we hear of often is the Petsmart dog training company. We have heard of people being asked to leave the Petsmart dog training course because their dog was too hyper or too rambunctious. Well, isn’t that why you are there? Isn’t that what you need help with? DDT is a lot different from the Petsmart dog training company.
The trick, of course, is to find an excellent class and instructor. The dog training industry isn’t regulated, and anyone can claim to be a trainer or obedience instructor, so it pays to check around before you sign up for a class. It’s bad enough to waste money on a poor class, but your dog is also vulnerable to being frightened or even injured by the wrong person. If possible, observe a class or two before you sign up, and meet or observe your prospective instructor.
First time ever I own a pet at my home. i have a lab (Zooby) which is 2 months old and it is very naughty and playful. I’m following the training methods that you have mentioned in your site but not very successful. I would like to know when is the right time to train my pet and when is the right time (mature) for my Zooby to understand my instructions?
I think a couple of sessions like this will give you new found hope and confidence, and a plan to follow along with going forward. If you can see results, you’ll be more willing to carry on. But whatever you decide to do, definitely stick with it! Every dog can be trained. EVERY dog. Yours is no different, he just may need a little more time and a slightly adjusted change of plan from you.
This fun and interactive workshop is suitable for all levels – puppy owners who are just starting out can learn the basics in a safe, secure and supervised environment, whilst owners whose dogs have already had lots of practice will learn exciting new ways to ensure their dogs keep coming back!
We begin with an in-home evaluation to assess your dog and their unique situation. This allows our Behavior Consultants to pinpoint the source of behavior problems and work accordingly. Our training philosophy demands that owners gain the knowledge to strengthen the bond with their dog through leadership and training, as well as the theories and methods to understand, solve and prevent behavior problems.
Again, perfectly normal behavior and especially for a Lab, it’s just a stage we have to go through with puppies, they all explore the world with their mouths initially. All you can do is puppy proof your home as best you can, and supervise him and redirect his chewing onto suitable toys until he grows out of it.
Another option is to have a certified team of handler and dog, work with the school professional and the student(s). In this model, the dog and handler typically come to the school as volunteers to work with a specific student under the guidance of a school professional. After that session they leave the building. The dog and handler may work at several sites in a typical week of volunteering. I have added this model to my school counseling program for the 2017-2018 school year. I have several requests for animal-assisted interventions but am limited by Copper’s schedule. BF Kitchen is very fortunate to have therapy dog team Christine (handler) and Leila (golden retriever) visit our school each week.
The That’s My Dog! E-cademy program has been helping professional trainers expand their skill set since 2002. At Dogs Trust we have a mission; we want every dog to lead a happy life free from the threat from unnecessary destruction. It means that a lot of our work is caring for dogs at our rehoming centres – dogs that need a second chance in life. But it also means addressing the root causes of problems. Every year we receive thousands of calls from people asking us to take their dogs into our rehoming centres, and the biggest single reason they give is because of the dog’s behaviour. So to address this problem, we’ve created Dogs Trust Dog School.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of animal trainers in the United States will grow by 15 percent between 2012 and 2020, faster than the average growth for all occupations. The BLS expects that demand for animal care services will grow over the next several years, and that job prospects will be good for animal care workers such as dog trainers.
