At Dogs Trust we have a mission; we want every dog to lead a happy life free from the threat from unnecessary destruction. It means that a lot of our work is caring for dogs at our rehoming centres – dogs that need a second chance in life. But it also means addressing the root causes of problems. Every year we receive thousands of calls from people asking us to take their dogs into our rehoming centres, and the biggest single reason they give is because of the dog’s behaviour. So to address this problem, we’ve created Dogs Trust Dog School.
These programs are designed for the client who loves the idea of sending their furry kids off to bootcamp and having them return home with the equivalency of a masters degree in doggie manners. This gives the clients a huge jump start in being able to lead their dogs around severe distractions.
I give my advice about taking puppy to the vet toward the end of the article, section 13 in the clickable table of contents. Basically, you ‘could’ take your puppy to the vet on the way home, but it’s best not to. (S)he will already be quite stressed and overwhelmed with everything going on without adding a visit to the vet to it. Also, the first examination will be more accurate when your puppy’s had some days to settle in and you’ve gathered some info to answer the vest questions after watching your puppy a few days. So I would wait if you can.
Puppy training mainly focuses on socialization and basic manners, and thus fits well into a small-group training model. Puppies will learn to be friendly around other puppies and humans, and they will learn familiarity with the leash. Beginner and intermediate obedience classes are usually taught in a group training setting, wherein 5-10 owners and dogs learn basic to medium commands (sit and stay/down/heel). The group setting is recommended because it teaches dogs to ignore other distractions–whether they be dogs, humans or peripheral noises.
Matt is not big on books and unfortunately had a dearth of literary learning. He is a visual learner, a hands-on learner who works best by actually doing a task. Luckily he has a really good teacher who thinks of ways to meet each student’s needs equitably. One such example of this is when Matt’s teacher assigns him to starting a business and keeping records of profit and loss. A satisfactory assignment will mean an extra math credit for gun-shy math Matt.
RD is amazing! Seriously, best dog trainer I’ve ever worked with! And there has been a few. When my girlfriend told me she booked an appointment for our dog troubles I was skeptical, to say the least…. She arrived on time, she introduced herself and got immediately to work. I have a German Shepherd that has aggression issues and a few others. We put our dog in his kennel prior to her arrival. She asked us to exit the room so there were no extra energies (fear from us) present. Within five minutes our dog had silenced his disapproval of her presence in ‘his’ house and she invited us back into the room. To our amazement, our dog was out of his kennel, and leashed by her side. This was shocking! I never would’ve believed it if I wasn’t there as a witness. She diagnosed our dog, showed us how to work him past his issues and take control of our household again. Her rates are affordable, she’s incredibly intelligent and a downright cool person to work with. I highly, highly, highly recommend giving her a chance to earn your business! You won’t regret it. Excellent course at Dogs Trust, Nevendon, Essex, that Alfie the Brave balked at attending. But the instructors were fabulous. Kind, patient, and explaining everything clearly. Thanks a million. Worth …every penny and then some xx See More
Is your dog or puppy in need of Behavior Modification … or is it just a dog being a dog? If it is behavior problems, then what should you do, how do you fix them, is it too late? Dog Behavior Modification, can mean a variety of things. This can include, but is not limited to dog aggression, dog fear and dog anxiety, along with many other things.
Labradors are intelligent, but a young puppy can quickly become confused. Avoid overwhelming the pup by teaching a few, really important commands first and once he’s mastered these you faire un e commerce work on more advanced tricks. The priorities for your pup to learn as ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘stay’, ‘look’, and ‘come’. These five commands will give you control in most situations.
Smart Dog Dallas is an owner-operated doggie nirvana, located right between Downtown Dallas and Historic Oak Cliff. Our customized facility is on a quiet street facing the beautiful Trinity River. We are a “smarter” way to do dog daycare. We offer transportation daily to and from your house. We also believe that good dog manners are essential.
Consequences must be consistent When training your dog, you-and everyone else who interacts with her-should respond the same way to things she does every time she does them. For example, if you sometimes pet your dog when she jumps up to greet you but sometimes yell at her instead, she’s bound to get confused. How can she know when it’s okay to jump up and when it’s not?
Well you won’t know for sure, but the clock will give you a good idea. If your puppy needs to wee every 30 minutes, then its a pretty good bet that his bladder is starting to get full if his last wee was more than twenty minutes ago.
– Behavior Camp does NOT address aggression related issues such as biting, lunging, reactivity to other dogs or people. If you are not sure where your dog fits in, schedule an Aggression Evaluation and discuss with an instructor.
We generally characterize these dogs as “soft” and tend to give them away as pets when they flunk the electric-collar program. Thus we are tending to remove from the breeding pool dogs that exhibit this valuable trait. This trait of “cooperative nature” is of extreme importance to the average hunter, because the average hunter is usually quite unfamiliar with dog training.
Nosework is a new sport where dogs are trained to find certain odors in four different elements – interiors, exteriors, vehicles and containers. Sniffing is one of the greatest joys in a dog’s life, yet we rarely allow them to do it. This class is a great confidence builder for dogs; offers an outlet for older and retired dogs; and provides mental stimulation for ALL dogs. Dogs will become proficient on their first target odor, and will learn how to be “odor obedient” even in the face of distractions. The class is run seminar style where all dogs are crated when it is not their turn to work so owners will need to bring their dogs crate.
Presently we are not aware of any degrees offered in “dog training” at any major universities across the country. Undoubtedly, a formal education in behavioral psychology/ethology/veterinary sciences is very useful for an individual interested in professional training.
Taste deterrents include: “Bitter Apple,” “Vick’s Vapor Rub,” or white vinegar. Use these on your hands to make them taste unpleasant. Contrary to a previous post, please note that tea tree oil can cause temporary paralysis in dogs; use products that are tested as safe for dogs/animals.
By sticking to your training, being consistent and sticking to routines…and that’s key…he will eventually come out of growing pains and adolescence into an adult dog with ingrained training and learning that he will settle into and hopefully be a well mannered, well-behaved joy for you to marvel at and enjoy for the best part or more of another decade.
“While attending the school, my life changed. I fell in love with the training of dogs in all areas; protection work, detection work, man trailing, obedience, etc. I knew that it was exactly what I wanted to do with my life. Jerry Bradshaw and his staff made the whole experience incredible for me, someone who had never owned a dog before, plunging head first into the training of these amazing animals. The staff was knowledgeable, courteous and professional and made sure I got proper instruction and lots of hands on time in all areas of training. While attending the school, I forged friendships that will remain forever in my life and I was even able to purchase my first dog, a female Belgian Malinois, from Jerry while I was there. Upon graduation after 3 months, Jerry was instrumental in helping me obtain my first dog trainer job…”
I could able to train him on commands like sit, sleep, shake hands and even Hi Five. But as we live in a flat in 10th Floor and also due to my busy schedule and my wife currently 9 month pregnant we are unable to take him regularly outside for a walk (which I know is necessary) for his discharge.
We would like to thank Morgan for the fun walks and great training she’s had with Archer. Her hard work has helped us raise a more obedient and sociable dog. We especially appreciate her notes. We look forward to those updates—they helps us keep track of progress in his training and know what we should work on at home.

He is crazy for food, and become restless at exact time of his food time. Now he is 4 months old and all his initial 3 vaccinations has been done. He weighs 17 Kgs now and is healthy. He becomes hyper active when he sees or meets children. I have to keep a close watch and a tight hold on his leash whenever he is around children.
We’ve only been to the South Street location…When I took Miles there for the first time, I first fell in love with the fact that it’s basically a huge open room, with a large window in the front. There was plenty of space and toys to keep my little guy busy for quite some time, as well as super sweet doggie friends for him to play with for hours and hours!
Redirect your puppy’s attention using teething toys. When he has calmed down, gently talk to him and stroke him. Keep your hand away from his mouth. Start playing again and avoid getting the puppy excited. This time, use toys instead of your hands to get your puppy engaged. Start playing fetch, so that you are tossing toys away from you and using the puppy’s prey drive for positive fun. Playing with toys can be used as a training reward or break and keeps your hands away from the puppy’s teeth.
Your puppy’s adult teeth will start to erupt around four months (16 weeks or so) of age. For this reason, you should manage puppy biting before this age since adult teeth will cause more harm to human skin.
