Labrador Retrievers are high energy dogs which is what makes them such great pets for active families. But if Labs aren’t given sufficient exercise, they can quickly become bored. This often leads to destructive behavior and other common behavior problems, such as barking, chewing, and digging. Plan on giving your Lab an hour or more of exercise each day. Most Labs love long walks or a game of fetch. These are the perfect way to burn off your Lab’s energy.

The Labrador Retriever originated from and was developed in Newfoundland. They were most commonly used by fisherman to help retrieve fishing nets and loose fish. To this day they haven’t lost any of their desire or ability to swim.

Labs are well balanced, strongly built, athletic dogs who have a short dense weather resistant coat (they do shed!). A male Lab will grow to a height of 22.5 to 24.5 inches tall at the withers, while a female will be an inch or two shorter. Fully grown Labs weigh in at a muscular and energetic 55 to 80 pounds.

We modify exercises for older, shy, and laid back dogs. All dogs are placed with others sharing similar temperaments, skills, and size. Limited spots available so let’s get your fur kid enrolled before time runs out.

“Come!” This one is, by far, the most important. If you see your dog running into an unsafe area, you can get them to immediately come back. This is especially important if your dog escapes and is running down the street after something that he shouldn’t. This command should be fool proof. No matter how exciting the stimulation, your dog should always drop whatever they are doing and return to you when called. (Related: Train your lab to come on cue)

Happy Tails Dog School uses only positive reinforcement methods for some simple reasons:  they are kind and gentle, they produce quick and reliable results that last, and you won’t jeopardize your bond with your dog or risk bringing out aggressive behaviors.  I will never ask you to choke, shock, jerk, hit, punish or yell at your dog in any way.  (Click here to read Lucy’s shock collar story).  You will always feel good about the methods we use, I promise.

Once a puppy has had an accident on the floor you need to remove all trace of it.  And this is difficult bearing in mind your puppy’s extraordinary sense of smell so you will need to be thorough and diligent in this.

“In the initial session of approximately 1 1/2 hours: a.Rachel educated us on the underlying causes of our dogs unwanted behavior (aggressive greeting of guests to our home, fighting to be first out the door, excessive barking and ignoring our calls to come); and b.worked with us and our dogs leaving us with clear direction and tools to address the issues. I personally have had success beyond expectation with the tools she provided my husband and I to direct the desired behavior of our Miniature Schnauzer adolescent dog and Yorkshire Terrier puppy. We and our dogs are appreciative for her attention. I recommend her services without reserve!”

We immediately have noticed a difference in our dog after one session. She was so responsive during the session it was like night and day. I am actually disappointed we didn’t find this service sooner…. RD genuinely takes time to work with you and your dog and gives you tools to set you up for long term success. The sessions aren’t based on a specific time limit, which is amazing because our little dog needs some specialized création sarl formalités We are so thankful for our new trainer and how our pup’s behavior is changing! Many people look at a disobedient dog and only see the problem pup. They may act out in destructive behaviors. They may pull their owner down the street by their leash with the enthusiasm of a team of huskies pulling in the Iditarod. Somewhere along the line, there is a communication breakdown.

Once he’s got it, place the less tasty treat on the floor… but don’t completely cover it with your hand. Instead hold it a little bit above the treat. Over time, gradually move your hand farther and farther away until your hand is about 6 inches above.

Dogs are not born with aggression … so it is very possible to fix your dog or at least help the situation.

Two commands which are very vulnerable to distraction are ‘recall’ or the come command,  and ‘heelwork’ or teaching your dog not to pull.  Many dog owners find that their dog’s recall is great until another dog appears over the horizon.

“From the moment I stepped off the plane in North Carolina the learning process began, I felt very welcome and I knew this was my kind of place the moment we arrived. From then on the fun began, learning how to decoy for different kinds of dogs (Police, PSA, and Personal Protection), learning how to use the E-Collar for specialized applications, and most importantly developing the work ethic that separates amateurs from professionals. At this point I can safely say attending Tarheel Canine has been the best decision I’ve ever made. Not only did I attain the knowledge, skills, and work ethic to become successful in this industry, I got to meet and learn from people that truly make me a better person.”
