Thanks for the great site and tips. We are looking at rescuing a seven month old lab. She has been at a very great and friendly kennel since she was three months old and her owner abandoned her there. I know the kennel has been working with her on basic commands and some crate training. I was wondering what tips you might have for us and our situation.
Puppies between 8-12 weeks make the best students because they haven’t formed bad habits, although owners don’t typically sign up for class until their pets are between 6-12 months of age, says Pamela Reid, PhD, CAAB, vice president of the Animal Behavior Center at ASPCA Animal Health Services in Urbana, Ill.
Pet owners who are novices at training can begin a training program with these few simple steps. It takes repetition, time and perseverance for the puppy to predictably and reliably respond to commands in a variety of situations. Consider only classes that use positive training techniques.
We needed personalized, in-home training for our 2 female dogs who fought with each other and who needed to be prepared for the arrival of a baby. We got help with these issues and so much more. Throu…

Most of the time we keep him in his crate which is large enough for him to stand and can easily stress his legs. Only for giving him food and potty we take him out and sometimes for playing with him till he gets exhausted and want to rest. Rest of the time he lives in the crate only and he is comfortable in it.”
Regarding our general training approach, in the early stages of training we lay down a liberal foundation of positive reinforcement. Polite behaviors result in wonderful consequences! Once expectations are unambiguously clear, your dog learns that there are consequences for both polite behavior, and impolite behavior.
I have a 6th month male lab & 8yr old. My 6th month does not get the message to go to the door to bark or cry that he needs to go out to potty. I am the one trained to keep putting him out to go. How do you train them to bark to go out? I have not tried a bell yet. Also he will poop in my dining room when he needs to go & sometimes pee. Can’t seem to get it across to him. I tried letting him smell the poop, swat on butt & tell him no he is bad. That was a waste of time, did it the next day. Help
Socialization is critically important to your dogs’ well-being at any age, but for us small breed owners it can be difficult to find safe places and dogs to interact with. Come spend a day with Manners Unleashed. –>

You will be training your puppy from the moment you bring it home and start to house train. Puppies start learning from birth and good breeders begin handling and socialization right away. Some training can begin as soon as the puppy can open its eyes and walk. Young puppies have short attention spans but you can expect them to begin to learn simple obedience commands such as “sit,” “down,” and “stay,” as young as 7 to 8 weeks of age.
Yes, private dog training service is widely available. Most trainers will offer a choice of private sessions or group classes. And many dog trainers offer an option of in-home training sessions as a more expensive alternative to training at a dog park or training facility.

PreSchool-Grade 2—Tinka, a golden retriever, is “a joy dog,/a boy’s dog,/a chews-a-brand-new-toy dog.” She loves her boy and doesn’t like being left at home when he boards a bus on a fall morning. When Mom isn’t looking, the “spring-and-sprint-and-streak dog” races to school, runs through the halls causing mayhem, and ends up finding her boy in his classroom. Although she makes the teacher unhappy by messing up the room, the students are delighted by Tinka’s presence and find that the pup loves a read-aloud. In the end, she’s “a please-come-every-day dog.” Bowers’s vivid acrylic illustrations are full of expression, from the pup peeking through a screen door while waiting to make her move to the smiling children and teacher waving good-bye at the end of the day. Youngsters will like learning with each turn of the page just what makes this dog so special.—Adrienne Wilson, Edith Wheeler Memorial Library, Monroe, CT END –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
When you and your Labs undergo obedience training, certain points are needed to consider. First is consistence in training. Do not just train your Labrador in a varying manner depending on your mood. Be consistent always with what you teach your dog and how you approach them. This breed will actually comprehend what you say through memorization of the coordinated actions and words you formulate while you train them.
Dave met with my family and I to hold a demonstration which showed us how to get more control with our dog in 15 minutes than the other two trainers had showed us in months. Following the demonstration I attended lots of group classes and never looked at another system after that. More about me, I am 49 years young and have a beautiful wife, 3 awesome kids, one of who is currently attending The University Of Tennessee, The second one is attending Denver University and the third is completing his junior year in high school. We have 4 dogs and 6 Guinea pigs. That’s right; we have a zoo.
I think a couple of sessions like this will give you new found hope and confidence, and a plan to follow along with going forward. If you can see results, you’ll be more willing to carry on. But whatever you decide to do, definitely stick with it! Every dog can be trained. EVERY dog. Yours is no different, he just may need a little more time and a slightly adjusted change of plan from you.

The gist of all this is that the average hunter is low in dog-training skills, which is as it should be. The community of dog experts should be promoting the selective breeding of a dog that the average hunter can train and enjoy. We should not be breeding a dog with a bundle of genetically transmitted behavioral tendencies that make him difficult to train into a good working dog. The average hunter should not have to get a Ph.D. in dog training in order to come up with a dog that is pleasant to hunt with and pleasant to live with.
Your puppy needs to be taught what he can and cannot do. Some harmless behaviors can be ignored, but potentially dangerous ones need to be handled immediately by interrupting the behavior with a sharp “no” to get his attention — be sure to reward him when he stops and pays attention to you. Shouting or hitting will not help your puppy learn.
A Kindergarten Puppy Training Course can range between $100 to $300 (approx.) for a 4-week session. A Basic Obedience Course can vary from $200 to $500. Some schools even offer special value packages that range from $220 to $650 and include a mixture of obedience training, kindergarten puppy training, socialization, etc.
I can’t rave about Philly Dog School enough. They are friendly and accommodating and most of all genuinely love all the dogs they look after everyday. Also, they don’t require prior reservations, which some daycares do. The most effective way to train your dog is to use modern, science based positive reinforcement. If you reward your dog for the behavior you want, your dog comes to understand what is expected. Reward based training is effective, humane , fast and fun! Another result of this type of training is that your dog trusts you and becomes a thinking, self-confident dog who learns to make good choices. The way you train your dog determines the relationship you have with your dog. By using the Home Dog Training Positively method, you will acquire both the knowledge and the skill to help your dog become a well behaved member of the family.

During doggy daycare at Dog School, pets play in harmony with as few restrictions as possible. Dogs are never forced to sleep in crates unless they want to. Little dogs can play with big dogs if they like. The staff—all trained in pet first aid and CPR—attentively watches over the laissez-faire playground, tending to each animal’s needs and taking dogs on walks alone or in pairs.
Our positive dog training methods are pain-free, treat-free, and clicker-free. We DO NOT use shock collars, spray collars or pronged collars. We will teach you a system of communication your dog already knows, based on canine communication and pack behavior. You will learn how to use your body language and voice tones to get your dog to focus and respect you. You can learn to teach your dog behaviors that are and are not acceptable, both on and off leash, at your home, at the park or virtually anywhere.
