“Come!” This one is, by far, the most important. If you see your dog running into an unsafe area, you can get them to immediately come back. This is especially important if your dog escapes and is running down the street after something that he shouldn’t. This command should be fool proof. No matter how exciting the stimulation, your dog should always drop whatever they are doing and return to you when called. (Related: Train your lab to come on cue)
At this meeting you will decide if you want to work with us, and we will decide if we are able to take on your dog. Basic obedience training is an essential part of responsible dog ownership. For dogs, English is a second language Dogs aren’t born understanding English. They can learn the significance of specific words, like “sit” and “walk” and “treat,” but when humans bury those familiar words in complex sentences, dogs sometimes have difficulty understanding. They can also get confused when people use different words for the same thing. For example, some people will confuse their dogs by saying, “Fluffy, down!” one day and “Sit down, Fluffy!” another day. Then they wonder why Fluffy doesn’t respond the same way every time. When teaching your dog a cue or command, decide on just one word or phrase, and make sure you and your family use it clearly and consistently.

No matter how accomplished your instructor, always remember that your dog relies on you for his safety and well-being. If you are uncomfortable about doing something you’re told to do, explain your concerns and ask for an alternative approach. In addition, be cautious about who you allow to handle your dog. Many obedience instructors like to demonstrate techniques with dogs in their classes, and most of the time there’s no problem. But if you have any reservations about allowing an instructor to take your dog from you, just say you’d rather not. And if you are uncomfortable about the instructor’s knowledge, attitude, or methods, find a new class. Again, even if you walk away from part of the cost of the class, that’s better than damaging your dog’s trust in you and other people.

Picked up this book on sale from Amazon for my 2 year old niece. She loves this book (albeit not as much as her Hello Kitty tea party book) and is beginning to attempt to read some words! It does keep her attention for a little and I’d like to say she picks it up once or twice a day to look through it.

Small pieces of food or a favored toy can be used to motivate your puppy to perform most tasks. Provided the reward is sufficiently appealing, the puppy can be prompted to give the desired response by showing the puppy the reward, giving a command, and moving the reward to get the desired response. For example, food held up over the puppy’s nose and moved slowly backwards should get a ‘sit’ response; food drawn down to the floor should get a ‘down’ response; food brought back up should get a ‘stand’ response; food held out at a distance should get a ‘come’ response; and food held at your thigh as you walk should get the puppy to ‘heel or ‘follow’. By pairing a command phrase or word with each action, and giving the reward for each appropriate response, the puppy should soon learn the meaning of each command.
