Take safety precautions if your puppy bites. If you’re starting a training program with the help of a qualified trainer, consider muzzling your puppy with a basket muzzle. Your puppy will quickly learn to stop nipping or biting with the help of the muzzle, but muzzling is not recommended if you don’t have a clear understanding of the training approach and goals. If the muzzle isn’t introduced and used properly, your puppy can actually become more dangerous to people, especially those trying to put the muzzle on the puppy.

The Labrador Retriever is one of the oldest recognized dog breeds. Over the years they have also been known as the Lesser Newfoundland, St. Johns Dog and The Black Water Dog – these days they are simply called a Lab.

The time it takes to train a dog varies according to the dog and what you’re attempting to train. Housetraining a puppy usually only takes a few weeks, if adhering to a proven training system with a typically intelligent puppy. Beginner behavioral or “manners” training courses typically run 6 weeks. Obedience training typically takes 2-3 sessions per new skill—if you are practicing with your dog multiple times a day in between sessions, and if your dog is young.

But people, just like dogs, can be unpredictable. And sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is admit they need help. Like Terry Lynn Johnson’s popular Ice Dogs, Sled Dog School is about overcoming adversity, finding your strengths, and your friends, and following your passions.

Many people view crating a dog as cruel and it certainly can be if done incorrectly. But after effective crate training, the crate becomes a place they love, an incredibly useful tool for you to use for the management of your dog and a place they can use to get away from things when they wish.

You should NOT have to carry a bag of treats, or a remote control to be able to hang out with your dog without the dog getting into trouble or being annoying. For that to happen, you need to develop a trusting, respectful relationship with your dog. We can show you how.

The truth is that many ‘professional dog trainers’ don’t know much more about training dogs than you do … otherwise they would be proudly showing you the results of their work. A trainer who can show you how to get it done quickly, and with competence as well as compassion. With effective and respectful training. Someone with experience solving the problem you are having with your dog. This is especially true if you are in need of aggressive dog training. I have been a fan/customer of Dog School for a few years now, and I was pleased when they started the walking service which really fits our needs.  I have had bad, bad experiences with other dog walkers in Center City in past years so I really was not trusting anyone other than these folks anyway.  This is a first rate operation that is based on the nature and needs of people and dogs alike.  They know what they are doing and they are very detail oriented, while at the same time relaxed and good humored in all their interactions with me.  So appreciate Dog School.

Electric shock collars are still #shockinglylegal in England. Only Westminster has the power to ban sales of shock collars – which can shock a dog for up to 11 …seconds – so we’re asking for your support to ask your MP to #banshockcollars.

React consistently to bites. Every time your puppy bites, say “NO!” in a firm voice. Then just walk away and ignore the puppy. Social isolation and time outs can be an effective form of punishment for a pack animal.[1] You can also yelp when your puppy bites too hard. It might seem silly but puppies in a litter will cry out if a sibling accidentally bites too hard. Yelping when your puppy lays teeth on your will give feedback to very young puppies about what is acceptable playing and what isn’t.[2]

The staff was always wonderful.  Our little pup came home exhausted and slept for the next two days (something worth it’s weight in gold when you have a puppy).  Now we have a wonderfully socialized pet who gets along swimmingly with any dogs she meets (and I give dog school most of the credit for that).

RD has been amazing to work with! She really knows how both the owner and animal need to interact, and we are so pleased with the guidance we have received from her. She will not only come to your hom…e so that your pup is in his/her surroundings, but will take time to show you how to train common commands and break bad habits. She is up front with the information, answers any questions you have, and has patience. She is well deserving of 5 stars See More

Hold a treat in front of pup’s nose. Slowly raise the treat over and behind his head so that when he follows it, his bottom drops to the ground. Say “Sit” immediately as this happens, and give the reward.

If your puppy’s tail is waved slowly and stiffly, that’s an expression of anger. If it’s clamped low over his hindquarters, it means your pet is afraid. An anxious or nervous dog may droop his tail but wag it stiffly.

  1. Dog training is a tremendously rewarding career. One should remember first of all that, for the most part, training is a “service” profession and that one is usually working with people who happen to have dogs. In other words, you are working with animals but you are primarily working with people.
The secret is a 1 hr jog every morning followed by an hour of fetch, which makes his sleep almost 3-4 hrs without disturbing me, and after he wakes up, he eats relaxes, learns well and socializes, secret of a good dog is excercise and training
I toke and will remain to take my Cocker Spaniel. She twists and squirms around, like puppys do, but she is the love of my life. They toke excellent care, making sure she wasn’t too excited, gave her …an excellent bath, trimmed her perfectly, at other locations they didn’t have the patients to trim her face which in turn caused ear infections, at TEXAS ALLBREED grooming, they got everything trimmed and also saved those long eye lashes. I am so happy with the results!! See More
You may as well take advantage of this innocence, when they have no idea of what life is with no preconceived ideas, no habits formed or needing to be broken, to start training them to fit into the life that they will lead with the skills that they will need.
The most important part of training your dog is teaching her that it pays to do things you like. But your dog also needs to learn that it doesn’t pay to do things you don’t like. Fortunately, discouraging unwanted behavior doesn’t have to involve pain or intimidation. You just need to make sure that behavior you dislike doesn’t get rewarded. Most of the time, dog motivations aren’t mysterious. They simply do what works! Dogs jump up on people, for example, because people pay attention to them as a result. They can learn not to jump up if we ignore them when they jump up instead. It can be as simple as turning away or staring at the sky when your dog jumps up to greet or play with you. As soon as she sits, you can give her the attention she craves. If you stick to this plan, your dog will learn two things at once. Doing something you like (sitting) reliably works to earn what she wants (attention), and doing things you don’t like (jumping up) always results in the loss of what she wants.
