All the basic dog obedience training commands such as sit, down, stay and heel will be enthusiastically and easily learned by your Lab puppy. Anybody who has had the pleasure of living with a Labrador puppy will acknowledge the importance of these two puppy training commands – Training your Labrador to walk nicely on a loose leash and also to stop jumping up on people. This is because of their size, strength and excitable nature – the good thing is they are quick learners.
Play safely while you supervise training. Never play roughly with a puppy that bites. Rough play will only encourage this behavior and strongly establish it in the puppy’s mind. Never use your hands as toys. You should also closely watch children playing around or with the puppy. Kids are not equipped to train a puppy and injuries can happen.
Your puppy needs to be taught what he can and cannot do. Some harmless behaviors can be ignored, but potentially dangerous ones need to be handled immediately by interrupting the behavior with a sharp “no” to get his attention — be sure to reward him when he stops and pays attention to you. Shouting or hitting will not help your puppy learn.

Dogs are pack animals. They are genetically geared to work with others – be it other dogs or humans. However, they need leadership and boundaries if they’re to be truly happy. Part of being a responsible owner is to realize your dog requires more from you than just food, water, and the occasional walk.

I believe that every dog should be properly trained. The decision to train an animal can be one of the best decisions ever made regarding your pet. I believe that whether you train your dog or not, he will learn habits from you and your family. Obedience training ensures that your animal develops the kind of habits that will allow him to live a long healthy life. The right kind of habits will also allow pet and owner to enjoy a healthy, loving bond.
“We believe strongly in the mission of Bark Busters: “to prevent needless return or euthanasia of dogs for dog behavioral issues. We love the concepts behind educating dogs and their owners and come with a skill set suited to work effectively with people and dogs.”
Beyond independent study, dog trainers can further their training by completing a course with a school that educates trainers, or by taking on an apprenticeship with an experienced trainer. The Association of Professional Dog Trainers(APDT) does not endorse any specific schools, but recommends finding a training program that thoroughly explores the history of dog training as well as principles of animal learning and dog behavior. Programs that teach trainers how to design classes, create instructional materials, and work with clients can be beneficial as well.
Let’s say you are teaching the puppy to sit. You use a toy or treat to lure him into a sitting position. The moment his bottom hits the floor you say “sit”, praise him and give a reward. From this the puppy learns that the word “Sit” means he parks his behind, and when he does so Mum is really pleased. This makes him eager to listen out for those cue words such as “Sit”, which translate in his mind as “Do this and get some easy pickings.”
It’s important to start your labrador puppy training as early as possible (it’s never too late to start though!). Your cute little lab puppy will quickly grow to be a big powerful and excitable dog, which will be hard to control without some basic obedience training.
One of the biggest threats to the health of your Labrador Retriever Puppy is actually controlled by you. Labradors that are overfed or allowed to become overweight are opened up to a wide range of potential health problems. It’s crucial to keep your Lab active, healthy and fit through a proper diet and daily exercise – they love to chase a ball!
We train the hyperactive dog to be under control and be a gentleman. The electric collar is quite popular for this. Put a hyperactive dog in the hands of a good trainer with an electric collar and that dog will make an excellent gun dog or field-trial dog, but his puppies probably will inherit the same hyperactivity. His puppies will be just as difficult to train as the sire was.
Someone, please help me. My beautiful, golden, 1 year old lab girl eats rocks. WHAT?? you say ? Really?? Not possible – well, true….she eats rocks. I am terrified that she will die. We live in rural PA on acres of land and she has always had free run. All of a sudden , this is a new thing. Now, I’ve put a soft muzzle on her when she goes out. This is killing me. Can someone give me ANY advice or give me a better idea or tell me how to train her not to do this????
Small pieces of food or a favored toy can be used to motivate your puppy to perform most tasks. Provided the reward is sufficiently appealing, the puppy can be prompted to give the desired response by showing the puppy the reward, giving a command, and moving the reward to get the desired response. For example, food held up over the puppy’s nose and moved slowly backwards should get a ‘sit’ response; food drawn down to the floor should get a ‘down’ response; food brought back up should get a ‘stand’ response; food held out at a distance should get a ‘come’ response; and food held at your thigh as you walk should get the puppy to ‘heel or ‘follow’. By pairing a command phrase or word with each action, and giving the reward for each appropriate response, the puppy should soon learn the meaning of each command.

Many dogs require some quite severe punishment to achieve results, especially amidst powerful distractions. And dogs that are repeatedly punished do tend to become hardened to it, so that a spiral of escalating punishment sets in.
