The young pup looks to you for guidance. Never punish him either physically or with a harsh scolding as this will make him fearful of you. Old-fashioned training methods relied on dominating the dog, but we now know dogs trained this way obeyed out of fear rather than thinking through what’s wanted and obeying to please you.

After 1 hour with RD yesterday teaching me how to control my dog we were able to go for a pleasant walk today for the first time. It is not perfect but a massive improvement and I can see that it will continue to improve with time.

The whole process is incredibly well run-the ability to buy passes and make reservations online could not be more convenient. They have long hours to accommodate all work schedules and we have never had a situation where they did not have space for Abbey even on short notice.

We can drop him off as early as 7:30 and pick him up as late as 7. This is convenient for us for our crazy work schedules but also gives Ponyboy a good amount of time to get the wiggles out and be a kid. Ponyboy lives the life all day (Dog School posts pics on Facebook and Twitter throughout the day) and he comes home tuckered out. We are grateful that he is 1) getting plenty of exercise in school fooling around with others dogs and his favorite toy, the big purple ball, 2) is taken on a midday walk and 3) clocking sufficient networking time with other dogs…how else is he going to climb the social and professional ladder? And there is the added benefit that, even on days we do not take Ponyboy to the dog park, he is not bored and has completely stopped any destructive behavior in the house since starting at Dog School.

Another dog is therefore a ‘distraction’  against which you must ‘proof’  your ‘recall’  and other trained skills.   But the power of this or any other distraction will vary according to the activity level,  and proximity of the other dog.

This may be a little off-topic but I can’t find any information on this anywhere else. Can I train my lab to tolerate increasing noise levels in our home with this reinforcement method? Gradually increasing his exposure to the noise until he is able to tolerate it in a relaxed state?

I noticed changes almost immediately in my young French bulldog and deaf English bulldog. Pierre and Mack both responded very well to the praise-based training (forget about treats, shocks, etc). It was clear that both Pierre and Mack loved to practice, and I have no doubt that we have a much stronger bond thanks to Jen and PRO K-9.

Essentially, dogs learn to respond properly to basic commands in obedience class–and humans learn how to properly give those commands. Dogs and owners will also learn how to communicate with each other, and how to avoid distractions or disturbances from the outside. No matter which method of dog training is used, it is necessary to be consistent and committed in order to train a dog. Also, it’s important that a pet owner understand their dog’s temperament and hereditary factors, and find a class and method that is appropriate.

“Come!” This one is, by far, the most important. If you see your dog running into an unsafe area, you can get them to immediately come back. This is especially important if your dog escapes and is running down the street after something that he shouldn’t. This command should be fool proof. No matter how exciting the stimulation, your dog should always drop whatever they are doing and return to you when called. (Related: Train your lab to come on cue)

Does the instructor communicate well? Does she http://rentabilisermapassion.org/french/des-entreprises-de-demarrage-rentable-en-inde-_faire-de-largent-en-ligne-en-allemagne/ carefully and respond clearly? Does she offer help when someone has trouble getting a dog to respond? Can she get her own dog and the dogs in her class to do what she wants without resorting to extreme measures?

But, Labrador obedience training also entails a lot of patience, time and strategy. It may not be enough for you to train your Labrador whenever you feel like it. It may not be appropriate for them not to have enough exercise as this will lead to hugeness in their physical structure. You see, Labradors are huge eaters. So by doing some regular exercise will allow them to sweat off excess fat and maintain a muscular structure. Hence, if you only plan to train your dog once a month, then expect a very fat Labrador who is too slow to move always.

The most effective way to ‘proof’  your dog’s training is to introduce each distraction in stages beginning with the least powerful level of any given distraction,  and culminating in the most powerful level of that same distractions.

Your dog might not be angry at all! Puppies like to play fight by nipping and jumping at one another. Sometimes, this behavior continues into adulthood. It’s possible that your dog considers children to be puppies. If your dog bites too hard, tell him not bite; if it gets too serious, put stop playing with him for a few minutes. Lastly, it might be a good idea to tell the children to respect the dog and not to tease him.

No Labrador obedience training is complete and successful without positive reinforcements. These are the praises, kind words and treats you give your Labs if he does the right thing. While you teach your dog how to sit or stand, commend him with a good praise like “Good dog”, along with a tap on his head and a treat. This will encourage him to do more training and to do the right thing every time the same command is implemented.
