The gist of all this is that the average hunter is low in dog-training skills, which is as it should be. The community of dog experts should be promoting the selective breeding of a dog that the average hunter can train and enjoy. We should not be breeding a dog with a bundle of genetically transmitted behavioral tendencies that make him difficult to train into a good working dog. The average hunter should not have to get a Ph.D. in dog training in order to come up with a dog that is pleasant to hunt with and pleasant to live with.

The most effective way to ‘proof’  your dog’s training is to introduce each distraction in stages beginning with the least powerful level of any given distraction,  and culminating in the most powerful level of that same distractions.

We are now masking with training the major trait that we spent a hundred years developing through selective breeding—namely, delivery to hand with a soft mouth. If we take a hard-mouthed dog and put him through the force-fetch program so that he delivers gently to hand, then he will behave like a great dog. We may even make him a field champion through superior training. However, his puppies will still have that genetic tendency toward hard mouth, and we will be going backwards in the selective-breeding process.

It’s fun! There is nothing more rewarding than training a dog. When you see the light bulb go off and they figure out what you want, you realize that you both have learned a new way to communicate. You will enjoy the process and the final product of a well-trained best friend.

To communicate clearly and consistently with your dog, you need to understand how she learns. Dogs learn through the immediate consequences of their behavior. The nature of those consequences determines how they’ll behave in the future. Dogs, like other animals (people included), work to get good things and avoid bad things in life. If a behavior results in something rewarding-like food, a good belly rub, playtime with dog buddies or a game of fetch with her pet parent-your dog will do that behavior more often. On the other hand, if a behavior results in an unpleasant consequence-like being ignored or losing things she finds rewarding-she’ll do that behavior less often.

Getting a new puppy to live with an elderly dog can sometimes be good, sometimes be bad. It’s a lot like asking 80 year old grandparents to live with a toddler: Some will get all cantankerous, short-fused and hate the child, others will get a new lease of life, perk up and ‘feel young again’. Sometimes the elderly dog can retreat a bit and not want anything to do with the puppy, sometimes a ‘parenting instinct’ can kick in and they kind of adopt it. It depends a lot on the elderly dogs personality.

3.  I was concerned about dogs beating the shit out of my dog..he’s a lover not a fighter!   He just got bitch slapped by a 12 week old pug at the dog park..man she was sassy.  Anyway, I was concerned because some dogs don’t like his smushed face/colorful bow ties and go after him.  I haven’t found any nicks, scabs, or black eyes so that’s always a good sign!

  1. Use a water spray bottle in severe cases. In cases where biting is exceptionally strong or persistent, keep a water spray bottle handy. Accompany your firm “NO!” with a squirt of water in puppy’s face to interrupt the behavior. Take care to set the nozzle to spray and not jet. You just want to startle the puppy, not harm him. Be aware that the puppy will associate the water spray with you, and this could make him wary of you at other times.
