So if the dog in question is sitting quietly next to his owner on the far side of a  field,   that would be a far less powerful distraction than the dog which is racing around chasing a frisby twenty yards away.

Training should begin in a quiet environment with few distractions. The chosen reward should be highly motivating so that the puppy focuses entirely on the trainer and the reward. Although a small food treat generally works best, a favorite toy or a special dog treat might be more appealing. It might also be helpful to train the puppy just before a scheduled mealtime when it is at its hungriest. For difficult or headstrong puppies, the best way to ensure that the puppy will perform the desired behavior and respond appropriately to the command is to leave a leash attached and to use a head collar for additional control. In this way, you can prompt the puppy into the correct response if it does not immediately obey, and the pressure can be released as soon as the desired response is achieved.

He is crazy for food, and become restless at exact time of his food time. Now he is 4 months old and all his initial 3 vaccinations has been done. He weighs 17 Kgs now and is healthy. He becomes hyper active when he sees or meets children. I have to keep a close watch and a tight hold on his leash whenever he is around children.

“What I really liked about Tarheel is that they exposed the students to all kinds of fields relating to dog training. I went in wanting to learn about pet obedience and ended up loving the working dog training! I appreciate Tarheel for providing students the opportunity to work with client and working dogs right from the beginning, allowing us to gain the valuable firsthand experience. The course description mentions that students will have practical experience on at least 20 dogs. I and my fellow classmates quickly surpassed that number and we just stopped counting.”

Dogs have always communicated with each other by using body language. This involves facial expressions, body postures, noises and scents. Dogs will use their mouth, eyes, ears and tail to express emotions. By learning how to interpret your puppy’s body language, you can interpret your puppy’s intentions.

They were spectacular. My wife and I moved to Philly for the summer and needed daily walks for our dog. We were able to set up with Philly Dog School with only one day’s notice, one of the easiest and most convenient processes I’ve ever had with a dog walker. All summer they were incredibly responsive and helpful as our dog adjusted to the new setting. They sent me a text after every walk to let me know how our dog did and if there were any issues. And when we wanted weekend walks on short notice they were flexible and helpful. Overall the best dog walkers I’ve ever worked with BY FAR. You cannot do better.

Please note all dogs must be dog and human friendly, therefore your place on the workshop cannot be confirmed until after a conversation with one of our coaches – we will contact you once we receive your booking request, thank you!

Our staff isn’t just there for your dog during the day—they’ll take them home at night too! With our in-home boarding, your pup will be treated like family while you’re away. And, they’ll go to daycare all day instead of being cooped up in a kennel.

Conversely, when you engage in the practice of immediately sending your pup on every fall, you are training him in self-reliance. When he’s launched on the splash, he knows exactly where that bird is and will quickly pick it up. After he’s found several hundred birds all by himself, it is going to become difficult to convince him that he needs help from you in the form of hand signals.

One of the most endearing qualities of Labrador Retrievers is that they remain very puppy-like long after they’ve reached adulthood. The downside is that their energy level and tendency to get into mischief continues well into adulthood as well. Therefore, it pays to have behavior management tools handy. Some management tools to keep in mind:

The version of the vaccine must cover the H3N2 strain.  If your dog has never had this vaccine, please note that it is administered in 2 doses, 3 – 5 weeks apart.  After that, they should get an annual booster.

If you ask around, you’ll get all kinds of advice about training your dog. Some people will tell you that the key is to use a “firm hand”-to make sure your dog doesn’t think she can get away with naughty behavior. Some people argue that you should only use rewards in dog training and avoid punishing your dog in any way. Some people insist that all you have to do is “be the alpha dog,” assert your status as the dominant leader of your “pack.” It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the glut of differing opinions out there.

Your dog lives with a family, in a home. This is where he misbehaves most often so this is where dog behavior training is most effective. Dogs learn by association. Bark Busters teaches your dog to listen in the home environment. If he does not listen at home, he will not listen outside your territory.

In order to be certified as a therapy dog or emotional support dog, animals need to receive an evaluation/written designation from a licensed health professional: social worker, physician, psychiatrist typically. As for service dogs, which are allowed to accompany their owners into most businesses and pet-restricted areas, they can receive training, certifications, and registrations from several organizations such as TDI and United States Service Dog Registry. These certifications are not required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, but may streamline the process of getting a dog access to typically off-limits areas. Service dogs and therapy dogs are not the same thing. The same dog might fall into both categories, but therapy and emotional support animals are not recognized under the ADA.

“When I found Animal Behavior College I knew I had chosen the right program. It fit with my busy life and work schedule. I loved that I was able to work at home In my opinion, ABC is also very affordable.” – Fashawn Burgess

Applebaum suggests attending obedience class every year or two — three years, at the most — and practicing school lessons at home. “It’s a positive activity, and a great way to bond with your dog,” he says.

Pet owners can ask to sit in on a dog obedience training session to see if it’s right for their dogs. When they feel comfortable with the trainer and notice other pet owners enjoying the training class, they will have a better idea of how their money will be spent.

“Rachel was very patient in explaining techniques. I was amazed to see my 3 year old Lab finally walk with a loose leash. I have wanted to have my dog walk without a prong collar. The voice command Rachel taught me worked. I have already recommended Rachel – my trainer put me at ease when I was anxious about this new experience!”

  1. Labradors love to play and can be quite energetic, both as puppies and adult dogs. They aim to please their owner and surrounding members of the family. They need lots of exercise to continue to be happy and healthy animals. Being intelligent beyond that of most dogs, they are one of the best breeds to have with children in the home. To keep having an obedient Labrador, it’s time to start puppy training. The initial part of Lab puppy training involves getting into the daily swing of things. Knowing where his food and water dishes are is a great place to start. Following that will be learning when he eats, when and where he sleeps, puppy potty training and what toys belong to him, and not you. Also needed is clarity in what is expected of your Labrador, and what is not acceptable. It is very important to use clear and concise commands. Before  dog training starts, you have to consider the training method you intend to use. This method needs to be consistent, so making the decision is one that requires some research. Many professional animal trainers use what’s called positive reinforcement. This philosophy believes that animals are much better behaved and easier to train when they’re earning rewards and praise than if they’re being punished. Punishment and negative reinforcement training has actually been proven to cause aggression and unwanted behaviors. One common tool used in positive reinforcement training is the clicker.  It’s a small hand held device which makes a clicking sound when pressed.  It can be found at most pet supply stores for a couple bucks.  The purpose of the clicker is to mark the correct behavior with a sound.  More info on clicker training. It’s more consistent than a word or phrase from the owner and faster which means it’s easier for your dog to understand when they’ve performed the correct behavior.  Follow the click with a reward, like a tasty treat, and you’re off to a great start.
“In the initial session of approximately 1 1/2 hours: a.Rachel educated us on the underlying causes of our dogs unwanted behavior (aggressive greeting of guests to our home, fighting to be first out the door, excessive barking and ignoring our calls to come); and b.worked with us and our dogs leaving us with clear direction and tools to address the issues. I personally have had success beyond expectation with the tools she provided my husband and I to direct the desired behavior of our Miniature Schnauzer adolescent dog and Yorkshire Terrier puppy. We and our dogs are appreciative for her attention. I recommend her services without reserve!”
