Although many animal care and service workers require little more than a high school diploma, the same can’t be said for dog trainers — or almost any other animal trainer, for that matter. Most employers ask their canine trainers to hold some sort of certification. Community colleges, vocational schools and private training academies all provide education in training animals. If you’re hoping to become a dog trainer one day, it’s best you get a little education under your belt to improve job prospects and earnings.

Those in New York City also fare better than most, earning an average of $45,617. The same, however, can’t be said for dog trainers in Chicago, where salaries average $29,990. The most effective way to train your dog is to use modern, science based positive reinforcement.  If you reward your dog for the behavior you want, your dog comes to understand what  is expected.  Reward based training is effective, humane , fast and fun!  Another result of this type of training is that your  dog  trusts you  and becomes a thinking, self-confident dog who learns to make good choices.  The way you train your dog determines the relationship you have with your dog.  By using the Home Dog Training Positively method, you will acquire both the knowledge and the skill to help your dog become a well behaved member of the family.

I really liked that on the first day they have you come early so that your dog can get used to the space and people in a one on one setting, rather than being overwhelmed by entering a space that is already full of dogs. They also gave us a call midday to tell us how Abbey was doing, which was very reassuring. The instagram updates are also a huge bonus for dog parents.

RD does a wonderful job of addressing specific problematic behaviors your dog may be exhibiting. Our rescue dog, Oly, was highly reactive to small dogs in our home. During our first training session… with RD she brought a small dog to our home and gave my partner and I the necessary tips to manage Oly’s behavior and keep the small dog safe and happy. We are relieved to get some support with Oly and look forward to working more with her in the future! See More

We are some of the most successful dog trainers in the country! Our Dallas/Forth Worth dog training programs typically include what we call commitment-based training. We work together with you to set specific goals from the onset of training, and from there, we commit to working with you until these goals have been achieved. Our goal is to be the last dog trainer you ever hire!

Training should begin in a quiet environment with few distractions. The chosen reward should be highly motivating so that the puppy focuses entirely on the trainer and the reward. Although a small food treat generally works best, a favorite toy or a special dog treat might be more appealing. It might also be helpful to train the puppy just before a scheduled mealtime when it is at its hungriest. For difficult or headstrong puppies, the best way to ensure that the puppy will perform the desired behavior and respond appropriately to the command is to leave a leash attached and to use a head collar for additional control. In this way, you can prompt the puppy into the correct response if it does not immediately obey, and the pressure can be released as soon as the desired response is achieved.

Matt is not big on books and unfortunately had a dearth of literary learning. He is a visual learner, a hands-on learner who works best by actually doing a task. Luckily he has a really good teacher who thinks of ways to meet each student’s needs equitably. One such example of this is when Matt’s teacher assigns him to starting a business and keeping records of profit and loss. A satisfactory assignment will mean an extra math credit for gun-shy math Matt.

It’s easy to reward good behavior if you focus on teaching your dog to do specific things you like. Dogs can learn an impressive array of obedience skills and entertaining tricks. Deciding what you’d like your dog to learn will depend on your interests and lifestyle. If you want your dog to behave politely, you can focus on skills like sit, down, wait at doors, leave it, come when called and stay. If you want to enhance your enjoyment of outings with your dog, you can train her to walk politely on leash, without pulling. If you have a high-energy dog and would like outlets for her exuberance, you can teach her how to play fetch, play tug-of-war or participate in dog sports, such as agility, rally obedience, freestyle and flyball. If you’d like to impress your friends or just spend some quality time with your dog, you can take her to clicker training or trick-training classes. The possibilities are endless! Please see the following articles to find out more about what you and your dog can learn to do together: Teaching Your Dog Not to Jump Up on People, Teaching Your Dog to Come When Called, Teaching Your Dog Not to Pull on Leash, Teaching Your Dog to Play Tug-of-War, and Teaching Your Dog to Play Fetch.

Most importantly, students are provided with the tools of the dog trainer’s trade as part of the enrollment (TK9 Trainer School Application ) and shown how to use and apply theory and these tools in a unique and very general training system called the Tarheel Canine Training System. This is unique and original system of training originally developed by Tarheel Canine’s Training Director Jerry Bradshaw, and is constantly evolving and improving with new research and understanding of behavior and training methods. This is training you can get nowhere else.  This system has been developed for and applied by hundreds of previous training students in private training practice, police, and military applications. See our references and testimonials for more from our past students. Jerry and his trainers conduct training seminars for police departments across the united states (see our police K9 references), military installations in the US and abroad, as well as for foreign governments (Taiwan, Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Belize, Germany, and the USVI) on a regular basis. Our system is used by sport trainers, obedience trainers, police K9 unit trainers, and many others who have attended Tarheel Canine’s School for Trainers and have become leaders in their field since 1996. Many of our instructors are top sport competitors in Schutzhund, PSA (www.psak9.org), have their own businesses training dogs, or are in charge of some of the country’s most important police K9 units. Attending school with us gives you the ability to network with industry leaders.

Happy Tails Dog School uses only positive reinforcement methods for some simple reasons:  they are kind and gentle, they produce quick and reliable results that last, and you won’t jeopardize your bond with your dog or risk bringing out aggressive behaviors.  I will never ask you to choke, shock, jerk, hit, punish or yell at your dog in any way.  (Click here to read Lucy’s shock collar story).  You will always feel good about the methods we use, I promise.

Proofing can be carried out using just the same labrador training techniques as you did with your basic training, but it can be more complicated to set the dog up to ‘win’  when you are proofing,  than it was when you were teaching in the absence of any distractions.

Don’t forget, the time between bringing your puppy home and him reaching 3 months of age is only 4 or 5 weeks. If you can possibly arrange for you or other members of the family to take a few weeks off work at this point, you will have an easier time of it.

Take safety precautions if your puppy bites. If you’re starting a training program with the help of a qualified trainer, consider muzzling your puppy with a basket muzzle. Your puppy will quickly learn to stop nipping or biting with the help of the muzzle, but muzzling is not recommended if you don’t have a clear understanding of the training approach and goals. If the muzzle isn’t introduced and used properly, your puppy can actually become more dangerous to people, especially those trying to put the muzzle on the puppy.

  1. Oh my gosh, thank you, thank you, thank you! I love my lab, but yesterday when I was walking her, she pulled so hard I face planted. This website is amazing. Thank you for all who contribute. Bella and I started training today and I could already see her starting to respond. Your whole attitude toward dogs is spot on! Thank you!
React consistently to bites. Every time your puppy bites, say “NO!” in a firm voice. Then just walk away and ignore the puppy. Social isolation and time outs can be an effective form of punishment for a pack animal.[1] You can also yelp when your puppy bites too hard. It might seem silly but puppies in a litter will cry out if a sibling accidentally bites too hard. Yelping when your puppy lays teeth on your will give feedback to very young puppies about what is acceptable playing and what isn’t.[2]
