Matt and his family live off the grid with few modern day conveniences. His parents believe in Free Range kids. Matt gets a lot of taunting in school and has even been called Smoky because of his aroma of the family’s wood burning stove. Matt tends to learn by doing rather than book learning so math class is getting difficult for him. His teacher gives the class a chance to earn some extra math credit by starting a business and reporting the profit/loss to the class.

Taste deterrents include: “Bitter Apple,” “Vick’s Vapor Rub,” or white vinegar. Use these on your hands to make them taste unpleasant. Contrary to a previous post, please note that tea tree oil can cause temporary paralysis in dogs; use products that are tested as safe for dogs/animals. [4]

When training is started at 7 to 8 weeks of age, use methods that rely on positive reinforcement and gentle teaching. Puppies have short attention spans, so training sessions should be brief, but should occur daily. Puppies can be taught to “sit,” “down,” and “stand” using a method called food-lure training. We use food treats to entice the dog to follow its nose into the proper positions for “sit,” “down,” “stand,” and “stay”.

As with any job, location affects salaries, and a dog trainer is no exception. A survey conducted by the Economic Research Institute found that dog trainers earn the most in Los Angeles, California, where salaries average $61,590 a year. Those in New York City also fare better than most, earning an average of $45,617. The same, however, can’t be said for dog trainers in Chicago, where salaries average $29,990. Salaries in Phoenix are also relatively low, with dog trainers earning just over $25,000 a year.

Hey I have a 7 month old male lab retriever, I have tried and tried to teach him obedience but with no luck he just doesn’t do it. He is very energetic as would all puppies be, but he seems to me to have a lack of respect and basically just runs rings round me. Out walking he pulls, he runs after everything! Birds, leaves, people, dogs, any vehicle, heck even if the wind blows the grass he tries to catch it… He’s awful when someone passes, if he sees another dog he goes completely nuts and will stop at nothing to get to them.. To the point of knocking me down or biting for restraining him. I’ve tried averting his attention but that definitely doesn’t work… He knocks over the kids and pulls on their tops. He jumps up and he bits a lot, I thought this was mouthing but any time you put your hand out to pet him he tries to snap it. He has excited urination which has been a challenge to get over http://rentabilisermapassion.org/french/des-entreprises-de-demarrage-rentable-en-inde-_faire-de-largent-en-ligne-en-allemagne/ we have managed that (sort of)…before we got him a read a tone of books and researched a lot on training but it’s just not worked… Is it me? I don’t believe harsh punishment works, plenty praise and plenty love and affection but when your bitten or nipped on the legs every time your back is to him, he tears into possessions and just runs a mockery I’m at my wits end! HELP!!!

“The best decision I could have made for my new career. Within weeks of graduation I was offered a management position at a local dog day care. I also just accepted an internship at a well known dog shelter. I am part of the behavioral team, doing assessments and training for the shelter dogs. These opportunities have endless possibilities. I am looking forward to welcoming new clients soon.” – Jenny H., Master Class Graduate

Mike was patient, knowledgeable and kind with our two giant, ill-behaved dogs. We just had a baby and he worked with us on many things such as not rushing the door when someone rings the doorbell, avoiding baby toys, and coming when called. He is a lifesaver!Melinda G.January 10 2018

The responsibility to be a good canine citizen does not lie at the feet of the dog. It rests on the shoulders of their owners. Almost 100% of the time a dog creates havoc in someone’s life – unless that dog has some neurological impairment – the underlying cause of behavioral problems is their owner’s lack of participation in their training, socialization, and exercise requirements.

Wagmore Canine Enrichment offers Dog Training, Daycare, Boarding, Pet-sitting, and Dog Walking. Our focus in training is helping our canine companions live a healthy, happy life in a forever family. We offer puppy socialization and training, adult manners classes, and numerous activity classes.

Another option is to have a certified team of handler and dog, work with the school professional and the student(s).  In this model, the dog and handler typically come to the school as volunteers to work with a specific student under the guidance of a school professional.  After that session they leave the building. The dog and handler may work at several sites in a typical week of volunteering.  I have added this model to my school counseling program for the 2017-2018 school year.   I have several requests for animal-assisted interventions but am limited by Copper’s schedule.   BF Kitchen is very fortunate to have therapy dog team Christine (handler) and Leila (golden retriever) visit our school each week.

RD was recommended to us by the rescue (One Tail at a Time) where we got our dog, Ruby. We knew we were going to have to work with Ruby a lot on multiple issues. She had been in multiple shelters and …although she was well potty trained and liked her crate, she had not been through a lot of normal puppy and people socialization. We were pretty desperate for help and RD brought it. She was able to get us a training within the same day as Ruby’s initial evaluation because her schedule was free. We saw a complete change in Ruby after one visit. After working with her a couple weeks, we had RD back and she was able to bring a couple dogs so we could get Ruby used to walking and being around other dogs in our home. Each time, we learn more about dog behavior and how we can behave to help Ruby progress. RD’s manner is direct and kind and she is always reassuring. She helped us recognize the difference between puppy behavior and breed behavior. We’re so happy to have met RD and feel more and more confident in helping Ruby be happy and healthy. See More

Wouldn’t you like to have a well-mannered dog as a member of your family?  Most people would, but whether we like to admit it or not, most of our canine friends are in need of help when it comes to learning what we consider to be appropriate behavior. They do not always understand “our” rules and expectations, and they do not always understand what we are asking them to do. This lack of communication can cause frustration for both you and your pet, and this can unfortunately lead to bigger problems in the future. Providing training in order to give your dog the gift of understanding is the mission at Colonial Dog School. Only positive training methods are used because your best friend deserves it!

Puppies want to please. Reward-based training methods are effective because when a puppy does good, he is praised. This makes him keen to repeat the behavior, in order to get more adoration (or a treat or a game with a toy). This is especially true for Labradors, who are very loving dogs that thrive on the approval of their owners.
