In-home dog training consists of weekly visits from a certified dog trainer. Your dog trainer will assess your dog’s specific learning style, and compose a training program based off your needs. At the end of each training session, you will receive clearly defined homework and each lesson builds off the prior lesson.
This can help keep your dog safe when his curiosity gets the better of him, like if he smells something intriguing but possibly dangerous on the ground! The goal is to teach your pup that he gets something even better for ignoring the other item.
Your curriculum and education at the training school should include lectures, reading assignments and practical hands-on experience working with a large number and variety of dogs and/or other animals. The instruction should go on for weeks, not days. Remember, your education will continue throughout your career.
Ian discusses how we should learn to see the world from our dogs perspective and in doing so, how we can better earn their love and trust. Armed with this love and trust, we will form a better relationship and as a result, effective training becomes just that much more effective and enjoyable for both you and your dog.

The Labrador Retriever was first bred as a fishing dog in Newfoundland. They have been referred to by many other names, like Lesser Newfoundland and St. John’s Dog. Today, it is one of the most sought-after breeds in the US, and the dogs are called Labrador or, more commonly, a Lab. A Labrador is intelligent, playful and fun-loving, but can be a little dogged when it comes to obedience! So, it is recommended that you start training your Lab from an early age, preferably when he is a little more than 12 weeks. The Labrador serves as a great companion dog and is yellow, black or golden in color. It is a breed that is most commonly trained as watch dogs and police dogs, and for the detection of narcotics and explosives. They also serve as guiding eyes for the blind. This article on tips to train a Labrador, will help you in the proper training of your gorgeous Labrador pup.
“The best decision I could have made for my new career. Within weeks of graduation I was offered a management position at a local dog day care. I also just accepted an internship at a well known dog shelter. I am part of the behavioral team, doing assessments and training for the shelter dogs. These opportunities have endless possibilities. I am looking forward to welcoming new clients soon.” – Jenny H., Master Class Graduate
Practice the commands in lots of different places — in the living room, garden, hall or kitchen, even out on walks — so that he gets used to responding to you in all sorts of situations. You can use the click technique to help with other aspects of your puppy’s training, such as encouraging him to stand still for grooming and getting him used to traveling by car.
This can be one of the more difficult commands in dog obedience training. Why? Because the position is a submissive posture. You can help by keeping training positive and relaxed, particularly with fearful or anxious dogs.
You should NOT have to carry a bag of treats, or a remote control to be able to hang out with your dog without the dog getting into trouble or being annoying. For that to happen, you need to develop a trusting, respectful relationship with your dog. We can show you how.
For nearly four years, I learned not only how to handle dogs, but also a good deal of information about how to care for a dog throughout their entire life. I then took that knowledge and expanded it after being hired as a full time employee at Village Veterinary Medical Center in Farragut. I also expanded my furry family by adopting an owner surrendered, mostly blind Cornish Rex cat that I named Wisp. I sometimes think she’s a dog in a cat body because she fetches and definetly understands what it means when I change my tone of voice or use body language with her.
Would you be able to book a couple of house visit sessions with a professional dog trainer? I know they aren’t cheap but I think it will really help you. They can come to your house and see your boy in his environment, how he behaves, watch you try to command and guide him to do things and then advise and actually show you how to get the results you’re after. Train your dog and show you how to train your dog. In just two or three sessions you should be able to watch and copy exactly how they go about things to get results with your individual dog…and that’s the important part, with YOUR dog. Because what works with some may not work with others.
Pat provided us with customized in home and about town training that addressed our specific concerns. She started by working on our most pressing needs, showing us the steps to achieve positive results right away. Her sessions are packed full of valuable information you can use in everyday situations. I give Pat a four-paws-up rating! – Joni, Santa Rosa, CA
The dog is taught to ‘sit’ in fairly undemanding conditions (a quiet back yard for example) then taken into much more distracting and tempting conditions where his obedience is deliberately ‘challenged’.

The Labrador is the breed I most commonly work with, and I am alarmed at the trends I see. It has become the general custom to force-fetch train every dog. This corrects any tendency to drop birds, mouth birds or run off to the bushes with birds. It also masks the genetic tendencies toward those behaviors.
This is a handling class to prepare for the CGC test, which is administered on the last class. You and your dog must already have mastered the basic exercises, therefore the Basic Positive Training Class is a pre-requisite. The cost for the five-week class, including the test and collar tag if you pass, is $150. Call 954-349-5969 to preregister.

We immediately have noticed a difference in our dog after one session. She was so responsive during the session it was like night and day. I am actually disappointed we didn’t find this service sooner…. RD genuinely takes time to work with you and your dog and gives you tools to set you up for long term success. The sessions aren’t based on a specific time limit, which is amazing because our little dog needs some specialized attention. We are so thankful for our new trainer and how our pup’s behavior is changing! See More
“From the moment I stepped off the plane in North Carolina the learning process began, I felt very welcome and I knew this was my kind of place the moment we arrived. From then on the fun began, learning how to decoy for different kinds of dogs (Police, PSA, and Personal Protection), learning how to use the E-Collar for specialized applications, and most importantly developing the work ethic that separates amateurs from professionals. At this point I can safely say attending Tarheel Canine has been the best decision I’ve ever made. Not only did I attain the knowledge, skills, and work ethic to become successful in this industry, I got to meet and learn from people that truly make me a better person.”

Start the training by letting your dog bark two or three times, praise him for sounding the alarm, then say “Stop barking” and hold out a treat in front of him. Your dog will stop immediately if only due to the fact that he can’t sniff the treat while barking. After a few seconds of quiet, give him the reward. Gradually increase the time from when the barking stops to the giving of the reward.
My black lab pup is 3 months. She will poop outside when I remember to take her outside every 2 hours daytime. At night she is continent for 7 hrs in her crate BUT today she ate her own poop off the carpet. HELP. Why did she do that?

Although she’s not a puppy, if you follow the advice given above then you should see an improvement. You might also want to consider have a session with a professional behaviorist to see if they can suggest anything specific that might help. Best wishes, Lucy.
