It’s been about 10 weeks since RD came over and almost magically fixed our very naughty, anxious dog Indie. It was really amazing. Between explaining to us what was wrong, and explaining to Indie th…at he was safe and could calm down, she spent about 2 hours with us. The changes are shocking. All our lives are so much better. We could not be happier. She is so experienced and has such a way with understanding dogs, I could not recommend her more highly! See More

PreSchool-Grade 2—Tinka, a golden retriever, is “a joy dog,/a boy’s dog,/a chews-a-brand-new-toy dog.” She loves her boy and doesn’t like being left at home when he boards a bus on a fall morning. When Mom isn’t looking, the “spring-and-sprint-and-streak dog” races to school, runs through the halls causing mayhem, and ends up finding her boy in his classroom. Although she makes the teacher unhappy by messing up the room, the students are delighted by Tinka’s presence and find that the pup loves a read-aloud. In the end, she’s “a please-come-every-day dog.” Bowers’s vivid acrylic illustrations are full of expression, from the pup peeking through a screen door while waiting to make her move to the smiling children and teacher waving good-bye at the end of the day. Youngsters will like learning with each turn of the page just what makes this dog so special.—Adrienne Wilson, Edith Wheeler Memorial Library, Monroe, CT END –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

One of the most common questions dog owners ask me is: “How can I stop my dog from doing (a specific bad behavior)?” My answer is almost always the same, no matter what the misbehavior is…. [read more]
We’ve only been to the South Street location…When I took Miles there for the first time, I first fell in love with the fact that it’s basically a huge open room, with a large window in the front. There was plenty of space and toys to keep my little guy busy for quite some time, as well as super sweet doggie friends for him to play with for hours and hours!
Matt is not the most popular kid in school. His back-to-the-land parents think it’s great to live without indoor plumbing and electricity; and the wood stove at home has led to him being called “Smokey” at school. His worst school problem, though, is math. Matt is athletic and likes to work with his hands, the type of skills his school tends to ignore. If he can’t bring up his math grade with an extra-credit project, he may end up in the remedial math class, something he dreads.
If you have training concerns, don’t hesitate to look for a trainer. Though it can be costly, training helps you effectively communicate with your dog and build a solid relationship for the rest of his life.
Some training methods use punishment, like leash corrections and scolding, to discourage dogs from doing everything except what you want them to do. Other methods cut right to the chase and focus on teaching dogs what you do want them to do. While both tactics can work, the latter is usually the more effective approach, and it’s also much more enjoyable for you and your dog. For example, you can easily use treats, games and praise to teach your dog to sit when people approach during walks in the neighborhood. If your dog is sitting, she won’t be dragging you toward the people, jumping up when they get close enough, mouthing on their arms and legs, and so on. That’s pretty efficient training-no pain or intimidation needed. Alternatively, you could grab your dog’s leash and jerk her to the ground every time she jumps up to greet people, and you’d most likely get the same effect in the end-no more jumping up. But consider the possible fallout:

Y’all Jimmy is amazing!! We have a 9 month old golden doodle and we choose to do the 10 day board and stay….”Emmet got to live with Jimmy” program. We were obviously nervous at first to let him leave the house for 10 days, but after seeing the results it was well worth it. Our…
The young pup looks to you for guidance. Never punish him either physically or with a harsh scolding as this will make him fearful of you. Old-fashioned training methods relied on dominating the dog, but we now know dogs trained this way obeyed out of fear rather than thinking through what’s wanted and obeying to please you.
The typical Labrador retriever of 30 or 40 years ago was a gentle, calm dog. Today, an unfortunately large number of Labradors are hyperactive and difficult to train. The basic reason for this shift in breeding selection appears to be our field-trial system.

I have had Max since he was a puppy and he is now 6. He has snapped at my 1 year old son a couple times. I think I should get rid of him. The last thing I want is for my son to be scarred emotionally or physically..Max actually does not snap at him when he is eating or anything. It is when he is around his back side. Alex pulled out an entire hand full of Max’s hair. Max cried and ran off. Alex feeds Max from his hand and Max takes it nicely. I do not want to get rid of my dog and do not think he would bite him, I just think he is trying to scare him. But am I willing to risk it? Nope. Would love to find some dog whispering trainer to fix it but I dont think that exists. Is this trainable behavior?

Although many animal care and service workers require little more than a high school diploma, the same can’t be said for dog trainers — or almost any other animal trainer, for that matter. Most employers ask their canine trainers to hold some sort of certification. Community colleges, vocational schools and private training academies all provide education in training animals. If you’re hoping to become a dog trainer one day, it’s best you get a little education under your belt to improve job prospects and earnings.
RD is amazing! She has a gift with dogs and the people who love them. We have a rescue dog that goes crazy whenever she sees other dogs and I thought we would have to keep this dog secluded in our y…ard for the rest of our lives but RD has taught us that we can manage and tame this reactivity.
Due to the Horrific Storm over in the Phlippin’s and surrounding areas….a couple of the Maranatha dogs (Cadaver trained) had a opportunity to go over and assist in the recovery efforts…to the Left:…is Patella, owned by Jim Houck they made three trips over and was able to assist through www.globaldirt.org
Mny thanks for the site. In India pups are always provided at 40 days as a standard. I wish i’d read your site earlier and followed your advice on taking our lab put at 8 weeks. He came to us at 40 days and is now going to turn 12 weeks tomorrow. We love him to death and is spoilt silly. He is the new baby in the family and asks for attention when he doesnt get it like when we have to leave him some time and go downstairs. He is super chatty and tries to communicate all the time. The problem though is he is a barky and neighbours arent taking well to all the noise. Am not sure if there is anything i can do about it. Please help.
Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen by veterinarians. Approximately two-thirds of cats over three years of age have some degree of dental disease. The most common problems are due to periodontal disease, gingivitis and cervical neck lesions, also called oral resorptive lesions.

On a basic level, obedience deals with teaching the dog to reliably respond to basic commands such as ‘SIT’ (don’t jump on people), ‘DOWN’ (put that thing down), ‘COME’ (follow me or come here), and ‘STAY’ (don’t run off like that).
