RD has been a blessing to our dogs. We have seen multiple trainers and no one was able to help us with the issues we were having with one our two dogs except for RD. With patience, trial and error, an…d trying to work within our means, we were able to find successful tactics to help both our dogs and us have a better quality of life. She reminded us that dogs are not like broken objects you can take to the repair shop for a one stop fix. She can give you the tools that work best for your lifestyle to help you and your dog have a better life, but it’s up to you to implement the tools and bring consistency. We highly recommend RD and are better dog parents for having met her! See More

Training your Labrador to walk nicely on a leash isn’t the easiest thing to do but it’s one of the most beneficial, making walks so much easier and far more enjoyable. The following articles give guidance on how you can achieve this:

Use a taste deterrent to keep your puppy from biting. Before you start playing with your puppy, spray a taste deterrent on areas of your body and clothes that your puppy likes to play rough with. When your puppy starts biting you, stop moving and wait for him to react to the taste deterrent. Once your puppy stops biting, praise him and continue playing. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to get the material off your hands.[3]

Set in Copper Creek, Michigan that I couldn’t find on a map (though I found many retailers and other entities with Copper Creek in their name), Sled Dog School engages anyone who loves animals, kids, adventure, and a touch of how will this resolve (or will it?) in a story that includes Matt, his younger sister Lily, a math class assignment, and a heartening outcome. At least in the past, Michigan was major Copper Country, and it feels as if Copper Creek may be in the northern part of the state, possibly in the Upper Peninsula. We get sled dogs teams in a rural residential area, parents raising free range kids, a family living off the grid. An outhouse, no electric, no central heating, and enough snow for dog teams? Yes!

If your toddler was repeatedly sticking her fingers into open electrical outlets, what would you do? Would you sit her down and try to explain why that’s not a good idea? Would you smack her every time she did it? Nope, you’d probably buy some outlet covers. Voilà! Problem solved. Prevention is sometimes the best solution. When training a dog, the easiest way to deal with a behavior problem might be to simply prevent the undesired behavior from happening. If your dog raids the kitchen trash can, you could spend weeks training a perfect down-stay in another room-or you could move the trash can to a place where your dog can’t get to it. Prevention is also important if you’re trying to train your dog to do one thing instead of another. For example, if you want to house train your dog, she’ll learn fastest if you use a crate to prevent her from making mistakes inside while you focus on training her to eliminate outside.

Hey,I have a 4 month old black labrador and he keeps jumping on my boyfriend and bitting his pants, I can see that he is playing but there are 3 weeks now and we don’t seem to manage him.We all leave together, but I give him the food and water and I play with him, but every time my boyfriend gets out to play with him after few minutes he starts bitting.Any advice? No matter how accomplished your instructor, always remember that your dog relies on you for his safety and well-being. If you are uncomfortable about doing something you’re told to do, explain your concerns and ask for an alternative approach. In addition, be cautious about who you allow to handle your dog. Many obedience instructors like to demonstrate techniques with dogs in their classes, and most of the time there’s no problem. But if you have any reservations about allowing an instructor to take your dog from you, just say you’d rather not. And if you are uncomfortable about the instructor’s knowledge, attitude, or methods, find a new class. Again, even if you walk away from part of the cost of the class, that’s better than damaging your dog’s trust in you and other people.

If you ask around, you’ll get all kinds of advice about training your dog. Some people will tell you that the key is to use a “firm hand”-to make sure your dog doesn’t think she can get away with naughty behavior. Some people argue that you should only use rewards in dog training and avoid punishing your dog in any way. Some people insist that all you have to do is “be the alpha dog,” assert your status as the dominant leader of your “pack.” It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the glut of differing opinions out there.

Labradors love to play and can be quite energetic, both as puppies and adult dogs. They aim to please their owner and surrounding members of the family. They need lots of exercise to continue to be happy and healthy animals. Being intelligent beyond that of most dogs, they are one of the best breeds to have with children in the home. To keep having an obedient Labrador, it’s time to start puppy training. The initial part of Lab puppy training involves getting into the daily swing of things. Knowing where his food and water dishes are is a great place to start. Following that will be learning when he eats, when and where he sleeps, puppy potty training and what toys belong to him, and not you. Also needed is clarity in what is expected of your Labrador, and what is not acceptable. It is very important to use clear and concise commands. Before  dog training starts, you have to consider the training method you intend to use. This method needs to be consistent, so making the decision is one that requires some research. Many professional animal trainers use what’s called positive reinforcement. This philosophy believes that animals are much better behaved and easier to train when they’re earning rewards and praise than if they’re being punished. Punishment and negative reinforcement training has actually been proven to cause aggression and unwanted behaviors. One common tool used in positive reinforcement training is the clicker.  It’s a small hand held device which makes a clicking sound when pressed.  It can be found at most pet supply stores for a couple bucks.  The purpose of the clicker is to mark the correct behavior with a sound.  More info on clicker training. It’s more consistent than a word or phrase from the owner and faster which means it’s easier for your dog to understand when they’ve performed the correct behavior.  Follow the click with a reward, like a tasty treat, and you’re off to a great start.

They will be eager to please, can learn a surprising amount, it’s fun for both of you and it’s quality time spent together that works to build the love and trust your puppy has for you, building a strong relationship.

Some people believe that the only way to transform a disobedient dog into a well-behaved one is to dominate her and show her who’s boss. However, the “alpha dog” concept in dog training is based more on myth than on animal science. More importantly, it leads misguided pet parents to use training techniques that aren’t safe, like the “alpha roll.” Dogs who are forcibly rolled onto their backs and held down can become frightened and confused, and they’re sometimes driven to bite in self defense.

Again, perfectly normal behavior and especially for a Lab, it’s just a stage we have to go through with puppies, they all explore the world with their mouths initially. All you can do is puppy proof your home as best you can, and supervise him and redirect his chewing onto suitable toys until he grows out of it.

William Koehler was perhaps the first dog trainer who had encouraged dog owners to have a better bonding with their dogs. In fact, before that, dogs were considered as working animals, and were mostly kept in the backyard. His methods helped dog owners transform these animals into household pets. It is he who introduced the leashes and collars and explained their importance.

“…originated from “old school” training where heavy collar corrections were used and therefore it was preferred that a dog be at least old enough to withstand wearing the collar and dealing with the pressure of collar corrections and punishment during training sessions.”

No! Don’t give up! At 10 months old he isn’t even yet a teenager and you wouldn’t give up on a 9 or 10 year old boy! I have an 11yo son: He still runs into things, eats the things I say he shouldn’t from the worktops and runs away from my side when we’re out and about too! haha.
