The collar does not magically impart the knowledge and skills of dog training to the guy holding the transmitter. Most folks buy an electric collar to solve a basic obedience problem, and they generally end up abusing the dog and not solving the problem, or trading one problem for an even bigger one. Proper training can solve nearly all problems in basic obedience, and you don’t need an electric collar to do so.
Over time, the words “good dog” and the affectionate pat become secondary reinforcers. Because they have been paired with food in the past, they take on more meaning and become reinforcement in themselves. It is important to use secondary reinforcement because you will not always have food with you when you need your pet to obey. In addition, if you rely on food to get your puppy to comply, you will have a puppy that will only do the task when you have a treat.
But if you live out in the country, kennel your dogs outside and are fine with them just running free for a few months, they will soon catch up with the early starters and leaving them to mature before starting will not mean they cannot succeed in training.

The advantage of ‘mocking up’ a fake scenario, rather than waiting to stumble across real live situations, is that it enables you to ‘set the dog up to win’, and to control the consequences of his actions. You can read more about this strategy in this article: Faking It!
First, teach ‘sit’ or ‘down’. Then work on having the dog stay in this position for a few seconds before giving the reward. As he waits say “Stay”. Gradually increase the time he stays sitting, until he can do this for a full minute. Then take one step away and then return to his side and reward him. Slowly build up the distance separating you in order to strengthen the stay.
Maybe someone could help me please. I have a 14 week old yellow lab. He has no problem holding himself in the crate and most of the time when loose in the house. However, when he does have a urination mistake when loose in the house it’s always on his own bed. No other place. It has only been 3 times since we got him a month ago. But it’s 3 times too many. We have now taken his bed away but I feel bad that he doesn’t have a comfortable place to lay. Has anyone had this problem or if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to help. Thank you so much!
Is for dogs that have completed the Intermediate class and received recommendation from the Instructor to attend or have the approval of the Training Director. Dogs will remain in this class until they have earned the Novice Rally title from the AKC, ASCA or UKC.
If you run into trouble, go back a few steps If you’re training your dog to do something new and you stop making progress, you may have increased the difficulty of the skill too quickly. Similarly, if you’re practicing a behavior your dog hasn’t performed in a while and she seems a little rusty, she may need some help remembering what you want her to do. If you run into training challenges like these, just refresh your dog’s memory by making the skill a little easier for a few repetitions. Go back to a step that you know your dog can successfully perform, and practice that for a while before trying to increase difficulty again.
This may be a little off-topic but I can’t find any information on this anywhere else. Can I train my lab to tolerate increasing noise levels in our home with this reinforcement method? Gradually increasing his exposure to the noise until he is able to tolerate it in a relaxed state?
Many other owners have no trouble getting their dog to walk nicely on a lead in the garden, but find themselves dragged of their feet within minutes of leaving the garden gate or whenever a passerby approaches.

RD has been a huge help in just the first couple of times meeting with her! Our dog, Dempsey, has needed to work on over-excitedly greeting people as well as with leash pulling and frustration. We’ve …already seen some major improvements and have been given the tools to continue on this positive trend. RD is great at being a calm, helpful presence as she explains what is going through your dogs mind and how to use this to your advantage. We still need to work on the homework that she gives us at the end of each session, but I know we will continue to see improvements week to week both in training sessions as well as in daily life. One should realize that a “certificate” from a particular training school is simply that: A certificate for completing one of the numerous training courses available. Many individual businesses will also be happy to charge you a fee and “certify” you. If you choose to attend a “dog training school,” do your homework. Investigate the program and how it fits with your needs. If you’re interested in a true national certification, please contact the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.

Pam is a great trainer. She is firm but not in a negative way. It is extremely hard work doing what she does and in addition to all the work she has nothing but love for animals. I board my dogs there as needed sometimes as long as a week or two and they always come back home happy and tired. E…

Essentially, dogs learn to respond properly to basic commands in obedience class–and humans learn how to properly give those commands. Dogs and owners will also learn how to communicate with each other, and how to avoid distractions or disturbances from the outside. No matter which method of dog training is used, it is necessary to be consistent and committed in order to train a dog. Also, it’s important that a pet owner understand their dog’s temperament and hereditary factors, and find a class and method that is appropriate.
Luckily for Matt, he comes from a family of sled dog racers. Using this experience, he decides he will teach his classmates the fine art of mushing huskies and malamutes. One especially kind boy called Tubbs who joins up with Matt is practically his polar opposite. Even so, they learn the importance of teamwork; of working with huskies and malamutes; of figuring out solutions to problems and how their efforts apply in mathematics.
