If your puppy’s tail is waved slowly and stiffly, that’s an expression of anger. If it’s clamped low over his hindquarters, it means your pet is afraid. An anxious or nervous dog may droop his tail but wag it stiffly.
Dogs have the cognitive ability of a young child, and the capacity to understand hundreds of verbal cues. There really is no limit to what you can teach your furry friend with dedication and patience. You can even invent your own tricks to impress everyone with your ingenuity and dog’s skill.

Essentially, dogs learn to respond properly to basic commands in obedience class–and humans learn how to properly give those commands. Dogs and owners will also learn how to communicate with each other, and how to avoid distractions or disturbances from the outside. No matter which method of dog training is used, it is necessary to be consistent and committed in order to train a dog. Also, it’s important that a pet owner understand their dog’s temperament and hereditary factors, and find a class and method that is appropriate.

Biting during play is often due to over excitement. Try and control the play so he doesn’t become over excited. One way to do this is to play for 15 second bursts, where you set down toys and don’t interact again until the puppy is sitting attentively. This short ‘time out’ sessions stop him getting too revved up. Plus, if he does nip, stop the game immediately and leave the room. This sends out the message that if he bites, the game ends.
Mr. Jerone, who founded the program, has some of the most interesting and unique credentials around! Formerly a Vietnam K-9 Corps Specialist, Anthony Jerone has also been the rare recipient of the Silver Cross & Bronze Star for developing dog-handling programs for the United States Army. He had 20 German Shepherds in his company in 1969 and in 1980 he founded the New York City Transit Authority Canine Unit. He has been given a whole sheaf of citations commending him for his advice and expertise from a great number of cities and states across the nation.
You should NOT have to carry a bag of treats, or a remote control to be able to hang out with your dog without the dog getting into trouble or being annoying. For that to happen, you need to develop a trusting, respectful relationship with your dog. We can show you how.
The time it takes to train a dog varies according to the dog and what you’re attempting to train. Housetraining a puppy usually only takes a few weeks, if adhering to a proven training system with a typically intelligent puppy. Beginner behavioral or “manners” training courses typically run 6 weeks. Obedience training typically takes 2-3 sessions per new skill—if you are practicing with your dog multiple times a day in between sessions, and if your dog is young.
In-home dog training consists of weekly visits from a certified dog trainer. Your dog trainer will assess your dog’s specific learning style, and compose a training program based off your needs. At the end of each training session, you will receive clearly defined homework and each lesson builds off the prior lesson.

“While attending the school, my life changed. I fell in love with the training of dogs in all areas; protection work, detection work, man trailing, obedience, etc. I knew that it was exactly what I wanted to do with my life. Jerry Bradshaw and his staff made the whole experience incredible for me, someone who had never owned a dog before, plunging head first into the training of these amazing animals. The staff was knowledgeable, courteous and professional and made sure I got proper instruction and lots of hands on time in all areas of training. While attending the school, I forged friendships that will remain forever in my life and I was even able to purchase my first dog, a female Belgian Malinois, from Jerry while I was there. Upon graduation after 3 months, Jerry was instrumental in helping me obtain my first dog trainer job…”
Repeat it every day. If your dog tries to sit up or lunges toward your hand, say “No” and take your hand away. Don’t push him into a down position, and encourage every step your dog takes toward the right position. After all, he’s working hard to figure it out!
In order to train your Labrador effectively, you’ll need the right tools for the job. The next few articles discuss the various tools and equipment available and how and when you should use them…if at all…as I do not recommend them all.
No Labrador obedience training is complete and successful without positive reinforcements. These are the praises, kind words and treats you give your Labs if he does the right thing. While you teach your dog how to sit or stand, commend him with a good praise like “Good dog”, along with a tap on his head and a treat. This will encourage him to do more training and to do the right thing every time the same command is implemented.
Even small breed puppies can cause damage. Do not ignore puppy biting when you have a small breed dog by thinking that it does not matter because they are small. Large or small, this behavior needs to be stopped early on. This will prevent even more serious biting later on.
The American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen (AKC CGC) certification is recognized as a high standard of dog behavior and is an excellent way to prepare for therapy dog training. This training class prepares you and your dog to take the AKC CGC test as well as improve on behaviors already learned.

She was professional, affordable and generous of her time and wisdom. Dita is a better dog, and we are better parents because of RD’s guidance. I would recommend her to anyone! She is incredibly easy to work with and great at what she does.

Dogs are pack animals. They are genetically geared to work with others – be it other dogs or humans. However, they need leadership and boundaries if they’re to be truly happy. Part of being a responsible owner is to realize your dog requires more from you than just food, water, and the occasional walk.
To be totally honest, I drool over working dogs. I have always been a sucker for Border Collies and I may have been sold on the program just with the first siting of Jimmy’s dog Dolly. Even so, I sat through the demo with awe as Dolly and Tea worked. And then to make it really cemented in my mind that this was what I wanted for Thunder, Jimmy had me put a collar on my boy and we worked him with the start of “come.” I had only had Thunder for a week at this point and he didn’t even know his own name but Jimmy showed me how to get him to focus on me and do what I asked. So we signed up. After a couple of lessons, Jimmy asked me if I was interested in becoming a trainer and working for him. I didn’t have any real experience with dog training, but prior to adopting Thunder, I had been considering learning how to train dogs. It seemed rather perfect that Jimmy should ask me this. I mulled it over for a little while before agreeing, but I’m truly glad that I did. I have continued with Thunder’s training and have applied my knowledge to train my foster dog. I also look forward to training my own demo dog and working with clients to help them have a positive relationship with their own pups.

I absolutely loved the characters. I loved the Miscos, Matt’s teacher and Tubbs as well as their curly tailed huskies. This is such a wonderful book that at the risk of sounding corny, I am really going to miss these characters, human and husky. This is a book I would recommend for classrooms and school discussion groups and projects. Another excellent feature included in this book was the glossary of mushing terms and the illustration of a musher with a husky sled team.
