By sticking to your training, being consistent and sticking to routines…and that’s key…he will eventually come out of growing pains and adolescence into an adult dog with ingrained training and learning that he will settle into and hopefully be a well mannered, well-behaved joy for you to marvel at and enjoy for the best part or more of another decade.

Our dog, Lily, has been somewhat of a challenge from the beginning. As a rescue puppy, she was immediately a beloved member of our family, but we quickly noticed that she had more energy than most any…

I chose Sled Dog School the book… because I’ve been loving middle school novels, and especially because Northern Dogs / Siberian Huskies / Sled Dogs intrigue me. My southern Arizona friend Carla introduced me to those fabulous dogs; she learned about and became smitten with then when she lived and worked in Alaska, later on owned several of her own northern dogs, and even later than that, ran a northern dog rescue and adoption agency. Tamara, a Facebook friend I first met on Best Friends Animal Society’s now defunct forums, lives in Yukon Territory and until recently had teams of huskies; I could not get enough of the frequent photographs and occasional videos of her teams in harness running across the snow!

Our program is best described as intimate. Our student to instructor ratio is literally no more than 3 to 1. Everyone gets to work dogs, and nobody just watches. Training with the instructors is informal and interactive. Questions about method and alternatives are encouraged. Many other schools are large and impersonal, and the bulk of your time is spent only training your own dogs. In this business you will be training the dogs of strangers or dogs for police work that have no handler to bond to. You have to have the skills to extract behaviors from all different temperaments and breeds to be successful. Our students are successful in the Pet Training Industry as well as in the Police K9, working dog and sport worlds.

Set in Copper Creek, Michigan that I couldn’t find on a map (though I found many retailers and other entities with Copper Creek in their name), Sled Dog School engages anyone who loves animals, kids, adventure, and a touch of how will this resolve (or will it?) in a story that includes Matt, his younger sister Lily, a math class assignment, and a heartening outcome. At least in the past, Michigan was major Copper Country, and it feels as if Copper Creek may be in the northern part of the state, possibly in the Upper Peninsula. We get sled dogs teams in a rural residential area, parents raising free range kids, a family living off the grid. An outhouse, no electric, no central heating, and enough snow for dog teams? Yes!

Does the instructor have experience training dogs? If possible, observe the instructor with her own dog or dogs. If she has an adult dog, is he well behaved? Does the dog usually obey? What does the trainer do when he makes a mistake? If she has a puppy, is she patient but persistent when handling him? Yelling, hitting, shoving—rough methods in general—are a red flag. And an instructor whose adult dog is poorly behaved probably can’t help you train a good canine citizen.

Hey I have a 7 month old male lab retriever, I have tried and tried to teach him obedience but with no luck he just doesn’t do it. He is very energetic as would all puppies be, but he seems to me to have a lack of respect and basically just runs rings round me. Out walking he pulls, he runs after everything! Birds, leaves, people, dogs, any vehicle, heck even if the wind blows the grass he tries to catch it… He’s awful when someone passes, if he sees another dog he goes completely nuts and will stop at nothing to get to them.. To the point of knocking me down or biting for restraining him. I’ve tried averting his attention but that definitely doesn’t work… He knocks over the kids and pulls on their tops. He jumps up and he bits a lot, I thought this was mouthing but any time you put your hand out to pet him he tries to snap it. He has excited urination which has been a challenge to get over but we have managed that (sort of)…before we got him a read a tone of books and researched a lot on training but it’s just not worked… Is it me? I don’t believe harsh punishment works, plenty praise and plenty love and affection but when your bitten or nipped on the legs every time your back is to him, he tears into possessions and just runs a mockery I’m at my wits end! HELP!!!

Joanne gave me great directions on how to correct Laila’s problem areas. I took Laila for a long walk after she left, and I walked Laila instead of Laila walking me. Since Joanne came to our home, Laila’s behavior is already like night and day. We are committed to the program!

They did not let my 13 month join as despite having the core vaccines, she does not have LEPTO 4 vaccine – my vet is perfectly happy with this. My last girl died 9 days after this vaccine so I was no…t letting my new girl have it. Dog School have refused us join advanced classes because she has not had LEPTO 4. Really upset 🙁 When my dog started puppy classes else where, they were perfectly happy that she hadn’t had this particular vaccine. See More

Training should begin in a quiet environment with few distractions. The chosen reward should be highly motivating so that the puppy focuses entirely on the trainer and the reward. Although a small food treat generally works best, a favorite toy or a special dog treat might be more appealing. It might also be helpful to train the puppy just before a scheduled mealtime when it is at its hungriest. For difficult or headstrong puppies, the best way to ensure that the puppy will perform the desired behavior and respond appropriately to the command is to leave a leash attached and to use a head collar for additional control. In this way, you can prompt the puppy into the correct response if it does not immediately obey, and the pressure can be released as soon as the desired response is achieved.

  1. I have a 3 month old labrador puppy. When in the kitchen he pokes his nose whenever the fridge is opened. One day when I opened the fridge he jumped up and licked up a cake which was kept in the bottom row.
PreSchool-Grade 2—Tinka, a golden retriever, is “a joy dog,/a boy’s dog,/a chews-a-brand-new-toy dog.” She loves her boy and doesn’t like being left at home when he boards a bus on a fall morning. When Mom isn’t looking, the “spring-and-sprint-and-streak dog” races to school, runs through the halls causing mayhem, and ends up finding her boy in his classroom. Although she makes the teacher unhappy by messing up the room, the students are delighted by Tinka’s presence and find that the pup loves a read-aloud. In the end, she’s “a please-come-every-day dog.” Bowers’s vivid acrylic illustrations are full of expression, from the pup peeking through a screen door while waiting to make her move to the smiling children and teacher waving good-bye at the end of the day. Youngsters will like learning with each turn of the page just what makes this dog so special.—Adrienne Wilson, Edith Wheeler Memorial Library, Monroe, CT END –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
We’ve only been to the South Street location…When I took Miles there for the first time, I first fell in love with the fact that it’s basically a huge open room, with a large window in the front. There was plenty of space and toys to keep my little guy busy for quite some time, as well as super sweet doggie friends for him to play with for hours and hours!
