The training knowledge is presented both in lecture format, so you can see the theory behind the technique, and in practical application where then you can take that knowledge to the field and apply the techniques. Training sessions are debriefed, and adjustments for the next session are discussed. You need to see what works in a variety of contexts with a variety of dogs. Whether pet training or working dogs, the blending of theory and application is something we stress in the Tarheel Canine Training System. Other schools show you a very narrow a technique. We allow you to explore among a variety of techniques within a proven general system of training, proven in competition and on the street and in the homes of thousands of pet owners. There is no cookie cutter approach, or “just one way” in our training. It has been described as eclectic, coherent, and systematic, with a reason behind each technique.

Leadership: Training establishes your role as the pack leader. When you become your dog’s teacher, you gain their respect. They will be much more likely to want to comply with your wishes if you have a history of working together amicably.

Although many adult dogs with poor obedience understand certain commands very well at home,  sometimes it helps to retrain a command right from the beginning using a new ‘signal’  simply because the old one has come to mean nothing outdoors in the big wide world.

Learning how to train your dog will improve your life and hers, enhance the bond between you, and ensure her safety-and it can be a lot of fun. Dogs are usually eager to learn, and the key to success is good communication. Your dog needs to understand how you’d like her to behave and why it’s in her best interest to comply with your wishes.

Starmark Academy, School for Professional Dog Trainers, Inc. has class sessions of four, eight, and twelve weeks year round, and offers onsite housing.  Subjects include basic and advanced obedience, dog sports, behavior modification, kennel and breeding management, personal protection, police K9 training, search and rescue, retriever training, assisted therapy, explosive and narcotic detection, and much more.  Here, students will learn all aspects of training and behavior and will receive certification upon completion of curriculum.

Our Beginner Class is for dogs six months and older. Students learn how to become benevolent leaders of the “pack” and to teach their dogs exercises that will help them to become well-mannered family pets. Beginner Class exercises include: attention, controlled walking in heel position, automatic sit, circle right, circle left, about turn, fast pace, slow pace, fast recalls using a recall chute, walking among a crowd, sit, down, stand, sit-stay, down-stay, stand for examination and an introduction to tricks. A Training Handbook is issued to each student.

Clothing — Wear comfortable clothing, tennis shoes or other rubber-soled shoes. Thongs, loose fitting sandals or hard soled boots are not recommended.  High heels are not allowed as they can damage the surface of the training floor.  Only flat-soled shoes are allowed on the training floor for safety reasons.

End each training session by leaving the dog in a positive frame of mind. To do this, end with a task you know the dog has mastered, such as ‘sit’, so you can shower him with praise and leave him feeling good about himself.

The Labrador Retriever was first bred as a fishing dog in Newfoundland. They have been referred to by many other names, like Lesser Newfoundland and St. John’s Dog. Today, it is one of the most sought-after breeds in the US, and the dogs are called Labrador or, more commonly, a Lab. A Labrador is intelligent, playful and fun-loving, but can be a little dogged when it comes to obedience! So, it is recommended that you start training your Lab from an early age, preferably when he is a little more than 12 weeks. The Labrador serves as a great companion dog and is yellow, black or golden in color. It is a breed that is most commonly trained as watch dogs and police dogs, and for the detection of narcotics and explosives. They also serve as guiding eyes for the blind. This article on tips to train a Labrador, will help you in the proper training of your gorgeous Labrador pup.

Set in Copper Creek, Michigan that I couldn’t find on a map (though I found many retailers and other entities with Copper Creek in their name), Sled Dog School engages anyone who loves animals, kids, adventure, and a touch of how will this resolve (or will it?) in a story that includes Matt, his younger sister Lily, a math class assignment, and a heartening outcome. At least in the past, Michigan was major Copper Country, and it feels as if Copper Creek may be in the northern part of the state, possibly in the Upper Peninsula. We get sled dogs teams in a rural residential area, parents raising free range kids, a family living off the grid. An outhouse, no electric, no central heating, and enough snow for dog teams? Yes!

If you run into trouble, go back a few steps If you’re training your dog to do something new and you stop making progress, you may have increased the difficulty of the skill too quickly. Similarly, if you’re practicing a behavior your dog hasn’t performed in a while and she seems a little rusty, she may need some help remembering what you want her to do. If you run into training challenges like these, just refresh your dog’s memory by making the skill a little easier for a few repetitions. Go back to a step that you know your dog can successfully perform, and practice that for a while before trying to increase difficulty again.

I cannot say enough great things about Dog School. My husband and I have very hectic schedules and a very energetic dog so this place is a lifesaver. Before dog school, we didn’t think that our dog Abbey was capable of being tired out-even after multiple long trips to the dog park. We could not have been more wrong-Abbey is all smiles and can hardly stay awake when we get her home.

Also, she looks to me as her main caregiver (literally follows me everywhere)… do you have any tips on ways I could introduce the puppies to her? I’m expecting she will have some initial feelings of resentment towards them and be territorial since she has been the only dog we have had, so I’d like to try aid this transition as best I can. Although in the end I feel like a lot of it will be them feeling each other out. Any other advice you could give on this situation would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

Labradors are happy, eager to please dogs that learn quickly when treated right. As highly food-motivated dogs, you have the advantage of being able to use his stomach in order to get him to work. However, be sure to use very small treats or he will spend more time crunching and chomping than training (and of course he’ll get too heavy.)

It’s the same with dogs. Most “disobedient” dogs were never given the proper structure and training to make them model canine citizens. They were never shown what was expected of them, and they never learned how to communicate with their owners.

The owners are rad. They are young Philly entrepreneurs who are sincere about providing a positive environment for dogs whose parent(s) works. They get our domesticated dogs too, i.e.  that they are pack animals that nevertheless need their belly’s rubbed.

I have a 3 month old Black lab. When we try to put a leash on him he just wants to bite it, and hold it in his mouth. Is he too young for leash training? We have a couple of acres and he has not been on a leash before. Any tips?

Some types of proofing can be carried out in training classes,  but many classes take place indoors and as such are of limited value for proofing.   Much better for many types of proofing are gundog training classes which take place outdoors and involve other dogs,  and people in a real life environment.

  1. If none of these options are affordable, consider visiting a group class. Many of those are available from $75 to $125, but this includes several classes and covers many skills. Though it may not cover the specific skills in which you are interested, many trainers will spend time before or after class answering questions.
