The most effective way to train your dog is to use modern, science based positive reinforcement.  If you reward your dog for the behavior you want, your dog comes to understand what  is expected.  Reward based training is effective, humane , fast and fun!  Another result of this type of training is that your  dog  trusts you  and becomes a thinking, self-confident dog who learns to make good choices.  The way you train your dog determines the relationship you have with your dog.  By using the Home Dog Training Positively method, you will acquire both the knowledge and the skill to help your dog become a well behaved member of the family.

I have a 10 month old large breed puppy. (70 lb) Unfortunately during the crucial puppy training period I had shoulder surgery. This led to some unwanted behavior like jumping and pulling on the lea…sh.

Regarding our general training approach, in the early stages of training we lay down a liberal foundation of positive reinforcement. Polite behaviors result in wonderful consequences! Once expectations are unambiguously clear, your dog learns that there are consequences for both polite behavior, and impolite behavior.

June and Colin were fabulous! Loads of information to absorb and utilize. I need to get busy! The initial presentation was easy to follow and well explained to me. I scheduled 4 additional meetings during my Naples stay. So thankful I called them!!

Now that you have a plan for positive reinforcement it’s time for housebreaking or potty training.  When it comes to potty training there are some specific Labrador training tips. Labradors are larger dogs and that means they’ll be able to begin holding their bladder earlier than many smaller dogs.  This is good news because it means you can begin potty training almost from the day you bring your Labrador puppy home. When it comes to Labrador training tips, one of the fastest ways to potty train your Labrador puppy is to use a crate.  Crate training not only makes house training easier, it provides your Labrador puppy with a structure and a safe place to go during the day. The size of the crate need only be large enough for him to turn around and lie down. Instead of having to make multiple crate purchases as your Lab grows, you could buy a large or extra large crate now, and simply block off the space he doesn’t need with the use of sturdy cardboard or a well-sanded piece of plywood. Dogs have a natural instinct not to mess where they sleep, therefore if you leave too much free space, he will be able to do his business in the cage but still sleep far enough away from it. As your Labrador grows, keep moving the barrier until it is no longer needed. Never use the crate as a means of punishment for your dog. Your goal is to provide a safe and secure area that your Lab can turn to for rest and reprieve when needed. Using it as a punishment will simply defeat its purpose. You need to introduce the crate from day one as being related to safety. Labrador training tips for the use of a crate in a positive nature are easy enough to follow. It is a gradual training that should only be used for short periods of time at first. However, once your pup becomes accustomed to this you will find him going to his crate on his own for a nap or a time-out during situations he finds uncomfortable. When you being to use the crate for longer periods of time such as while you are at work or out for any length of time, you need to teach him when you open the door to his crate it’s time to go outside. It’s best to already have leash in hand before you open the door because it won’t take your Lab long to find a different place for elimination. You are still trying to reinforce the good behavior of him doing his duties outside, so make sure you have your clicker and a treat on hand to praise him again for a job well done. Training Labrador Puppies begins with the right training method and a plan.  Know the rules and what you expect from your puppy before you begin training so you can be consistent.  Lab pups are intelligent and eager to please, a little love and patience, and a few Labrador training tips, will go a long way with this breed and he’ll grow into the wonderful dog you know he can be. 1. During initial meet and greet you drop off your dog and stay with them while they meet other dogs and check out the space.  I was very nervous because all the dogs were much bigger than him but they were very friendly.  Since there wasn’t any type of psychological test to prove my dog isn’t batshit crazy, I inquired how they know if other dogs aren’t batshit crazy.  Safety first people!  Basically, they can tell almost immediately if a dog isn’t going to work out by body language etc and they keep an eye on the dogs the entire time which put me at ease.  It also makes sense that it would not be in their best interest to keep a dog that is unpredictable.

There is no such thing as a robotic dog. This means that having a well-trained dog requires consistent reinforcement of commands and good behavior. It is imperative that you, as the new dog owner(s), continue to exercise your new family member daily, as well as routine obedience workouts 3-4 times a week, and always follow up on your commands. Because of the amount of training already done with our dogs, this will be relatively easy for you to accomplish. Without this maintenance of your dog’s training and behavior, the solid foundation that you started with can slip, and regression in training will occur. It is much easier to maintain your dog’s level of training than to retrain a dog once it has regressed. We will give you a solid well-trained puppy/dog, and everything you need to maintain it. On your scheduled pick-up day, you and your family will spend the day at our facility interfacing with your new best friend, learning how to work with and train your dog. Our goal is for you to acquire a high level of comfort and confidence in your skills with our K-9/handler interfacing program, and we will work with you until this is achieved. Upon completion of this program, you will receive a certificate of completion of training for obedience, as well as all your training gear. You will receive a 6 ft leather lead, training collar, nylon choker, and light lines to continue your off-leash work. You will be taking home a high quality pup with everything done for you: crate-trained, current on vaccinations for the next year, and obedience trained; a calm, well-behaved dog ready to be integrated into your family. All you have to do is keep up with your pup’s preventative health care (monthly heartworm and flea/tick treatments, yearly vaccinations) and maintain and strengthen the foundation that we built for you. These pups are sold with Limited AKC registration only. They are not to be bred. We highly recommend getting your pup spayed or neutered between 44 and 50 weeks of age. You can always count on us for any follow-up help or questions you may have. When you first teach the skill, it may take some time for your pup to catch on to what you actually want from them. When they do, praise and reward them and practice until they consistently do the trick the first time, every time.

Teach children not to shriek, run or flap their hands because this will engage the puppy’s natural prey instincts and add to the problem. Children should remain calm and keep their hands closed and close to their bodies.

We have had two in home sessions with RD now, working on basic puppy training for our 3 month old, as well as some issues without 12 y/o. She is awesome! The dogs love her and she gets results. She re…ally understands how the dog thinks, and uses that to her advantage. Also, a big part of dog training is owner training, and she’s done a great job of training me and my husband. Thanks RD! I bought this book– the kindle edition– for my kindergarden aged grandson. He is learning to read and the short, rhyming sentences are fun for him. It kept his attention all the way to the end. He loved the story and the pictures. His two year old sister sat and listened as we read it. At the end, she said “do school dog again, please!” That’s very rare for her .I just wish I’d bought the paper edition rather than have it on my tablet–It looks as though it will be a favorite for a very long time!

Just do very gentle training exercises for short periods of time. Hope you can have their attention but if they aren’t interested or make a mistake, let them be, don’t force it, play with them instead and try later.

If you’re going to have a Labrador live in your home, there’s little need for me to describe just how important it is to train them to eliminate outside, or a very specific designated bathroom spot inside. You simply can’t have them urinating or defecating anywhere they please.

  1. Over time, the words “good dog” and the affectionate pat become secondary reinforcers. Because they have been paired with food in the past, they take on more meaning and become reinforcement in themselves. It is important to use secondary reinforcement because you will not always have food with you when you need your pet to obey. In addition, if you rely on food to get your puppy to comply, you will have a puppy that will only do the task when you have a treat.
