I place the blame for this on our field-trial system. Our retriever field trials were brought over from England in the early 1900s, along with the golden and Labrador retrievers. The trials were small and very representative of a day’s shooting, and the skills judged were those that had value to the hunting dog and hunter. The trials emphasized game-finding ability, softness of mouth and calmness of demeanor.
Two commands which are very vulnerable to distraction are ‘recall’ or the come command, and ‘heelwork’ or teaching your dog not to pull. Many dog owners find that their dog’s recall is great until another dog appears over the horizon.
It’s been about 10 weeks since RD came over and almost magically fixed our very naughty, anxious dog Indie. It was really amazing. Between explaining to us what was wrong, and explaining to Indie th…at he was safe and could calm down, she spent about 2 hours with us. The changes are shocking. All our lives are so much better. We could not be happier. She is so experienced and has such a way with understanding dogs, I could not recommend her more highly! See More
If none of these options are affordable, consider visiting a group class. Many of those are available from $75 to $125, but this includes several classes and covers many skills. Though it may not cover the specific skills in which you are interested, many trainers will spend time before or after class answering questions.
The cost of dog training varies by location, and also depends on whether training is one-on-one or group classes, and whether it is at a facility or in-home. Pet stores and non-specialized trainers cost between $70-150 for a multi-week beginner-training group class. Private training averages $60-70 per session. For dogs with aggression issues, private training costs may increase to $90-100 per session.
Dog Training In Your Home was established in 1989 in Charlotte North Carolina. Our philosophy is simple: we teach your dog to be a well behaved family member. In many cases your dog’s home environment is enabling bad behavior, so the home is the most logical place for training. Our services are designed to make training your dog fun for you and your dog, while getting immediate results.
We can show you how to eliminate these problems and train your dog to be polite, respectful and obedient. In our In Home Training, or Dog Board and Train programs, we can show you how to make calm, happy obedience a reality for you and your dog.

We live in rural PA on acres of land and she has always had free run. All of a sudden , this is a new thing. Now, I’ve put a soft muzzle on her when she goes out. This is killing me. Can someone give me ANY advice or give me a better idea or tell me how to train her not to do this????

I rescued my beautiful girl Abby seven months ago, and thanks to Canine Dimensions my boxer mix puppy is turning into a well-mannered young adult. They helped me work with her leash aggression, play biting, jumping, and all of the other traits that come with such an intelligent and energetic dog. Most importantly they taught me how to have the confidence to handle Abby in all situations. Thank you!
Wouldn’t it be great if your dog could find your keys or your cell phone? Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to hunt. During doggy daycare at Dog School, pets play in harmony with as few restrictions as possible. Dogs are never forced to sleep in crates unless they want to. Little dogs can play with big dogs if they like. The staff—all trained in pet first aid and CPR—attentively watches over the laissez-faire playground, tending to each animal’s needs and taking dogs on walks alone or in pairs.
This training made the world of difference with our skittish rescue dog, Gemma. She’s gained great confidence and even a year later, her training is still on point. Our friends are always impressed with how well behaved our dog is, and it’s made her agility training progress faster. Our lives with our canine companion is much more enriching.
When duck hunting, wait until you have several ducks on the water before you send your pup to retrieve. Unless wind or current is carrying off the ducks, it won’t hurt them to float for a half hour. If you are shooting doves, pick up the short, easy ones yourself. Let your pup sit for 10-15 minutes before he is sent for the difficult retrieves. The exception, of course, is the crippled bird, for which you must send the pup quickly to reduce the odds of escape.
