Wouldn’t you like to have a well-mannered dog as a member of your family? Most people would, but whether we like to admit it or not, most of our canine friends are in need of help when it comes to learning what we consider to be appropriate behavior. They do not always understand “our” rules and expectations, and they do not always understand what we are asking them to do. This lack of communication can cause frustration for both you and your pet, and this can unfortunately lead to bigger problems in the future. Providing training in order to give your dog the gift of understanding is the mission at Colonial Dog School. Only positive training methods are used because your best friend deserves it!
Organizations like the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, and the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors offer helpful resources for those interested in becoming dog trainers. You can also learn more about becoming a dog trainer by talking with trainers, veterinarians, and other animal care workers in your community.

Our standards and practices are taken from different facilities and training academies across the country. Those of which we’ve been able to work at and learn from, throughout the last 7 years. Our philosophy is quite unique, as it is a collection all it’s own and a “library” that we use everyday. With our extensive background in hands on training and professional study, we are not limited to one way of thinking or teaching. Applied, are the methods and structured activities in a dog’s life that will benefit them most.
I have two accounts, one account allows me to swipe from right to left on my read globe notification and hide it, but my other account doesn’t allow it. Some of my friends can do it and some can’t, I have gone through all the settings and tried to find where to change it but I can’t find it?
One of the most frequent complaints of pet parents is that their dogs “just won’t listen.” But put yourself in your dog’s shoes for a moment. If someone was constantly chattering away in a foreign language that you’d never heard before, how long would you pay attention? Probably not for very long-because you simply wouldn’t be able to understand what the foreign speaker was trying to communicate.
End each training session by leaving the dog in a positive frame of mind. To do this, end with a task you know the dog has mastered, such as ‘sit’, so you can shower him with praise and leave him feeling good about himself.
Obedience training should always be fun both for you and the dog. The ideal method is to use rewards in order to motivate the dog to behave. This also teaches him to think through problems to come up the appropriate behavior, rather than reacting out of fear of punishment.
1. Currently we are collecting his potty and urine discharge by directly placing a container beneath him as we know by now that when he is ready for discharge. The problem is that we don’t want to make this as a practice and want to find a solution to this. Whenever he is in his crate he do notify us for his nature calls and never dirty his crate. We want him to also notify us when he is not in his crate and we can take him to bathroom or find a different way. We are also thinking of train him to do it on a potty pot or container which can be cleared by us later and will be a one time activity for us. But we are not sure if this will work out. Do you have any idea how others deal with their pets having same situation.
One of the more common places we hear of often is the Petsmart dog training company. We have heard of people being asked to leave the Petsmart dog training course because their dog was too hyper or too rambunctious. Well, isn’t that why you are there? Isn’t that what you need help with? DDT is a lot different from the Petsmart dog training company.
Some training methods use punishment, like leash corrections and scolding, to discourage dogs from doing everything except what you want them to do. Other methods cut right to the chase and focus on teaching dogs what you do want them to do. While both tactics can work, the latter is usually the more effective approach, and it’s also much more enjoyable for you and your dog. For example, you can easily use treats, games and praise to teach your dog to sit when people approach during walks in the neighborhood. If your dog is sitting, she won’t be dragging you toward the people, jumping up when they get close enough, mouthing on their arms and legs, and so on. That’s pretty efficient training-no pain or intimidation needed. Alternatively, you could grab your dog’s leash and jerk her to the ground every time she jumps up to greet people, and you’d most likely get the same effect in the end-no more jumping up. But consider the possible fallout:

Dog training is a tremendously rewarding career. One should remember first of all that, for the most part, training is a “service” profession and that one is usually working with people who happen to have dogs. In other words, you are working with animals but you are primarily working with people.

Small pieces of food or a favored toy can be used to motivate your puppy to perform most tasks. Provided the reward is sufficiently appealing, the puppy can be prompted to give the desired response by showing the puppy the reward, giving a command, and moving the reward to get the desired response. For example, food held up over the puppy’s nose and moved slowly backwards should get a ‘sit’ response; food drawn down to the floor should get a ‘down’ response; food brought back up should get a ‘stand’ response; food held out at a distance should get a ‘come’ response; and food held at your thigh as you walk should get the puppy to ‘heel or ‘follow’. By pairing a command phrase or word with each action, and giving the reward for each appropriate response, the puppy should soon learn the meaning of each command.
Right from the day you bring your Labrador home, make him understand that he needs to relieve himself not inside your house, but somewhere outside. For the initial eight weeks, take him out at regular intervals, especially after meals, before going to bed and when your Lab wakes up in the morning. And once he is successfully trained in housebreaking, don’t forget to reward him with a treat. Dogs simply dig treats!

Essentially, dogs learn to respond properly to basic commands in obedience class–and humans learn how to properly give those commands. Dogs and owners will also learn how to communicate with each other, and how to avoid distractions or disturbances from the outside. No matter which method of dog training is used, it is necessary to be consistent and committed in order to train a dog. Also, it’s important that a pet owner understand their dog’s temperament and hereditary factors, and find a class and method that is appropriate.
In 2011, animal trainers averaged $30,510 a year. Because certain industries – namely motion pictures – pay higher salaries for their trainers, median wage is often used to predict earning potential. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, half of all trainers earned $25,980 a year or less. Both figures, however, fail to differentiate one type of trainer from the next. A dog trainer is paid a much different scale than a horse trainer, for example.
Matt is not big on books and unfortunately had a dearth of literary learning. He is a visual learner, a hands-on learner who works best by actually doing a task. Luckily he has a really good teacher who thinks of ways to meet each student’s needs equitably. One such example of this is when Matt’s teacher assigns him to starting a business and keeping records of profit and loss. A satisfactory assignment will mean an extra math credit for gun-shy math Matt.

Training Tracks did wonders for our energetic blue heeler mix. She went from a timid, excitable puppy to a well-behaved dog with confidence. Mel and Jeff taught us how to bring out the best in our dog. We had no idea how much potential she had! As owners, we were taught how to solve behavior problems by breaking down training into mini-steps. Our dog absolutely loved the classes, and we’re not sure who learned more, she or us!
