When duck hunting, wait until you have several ducks on the water before you send your pup to retrieve. Unless wind or current is carrying off the ducks, it won’t hurt them to float for a half hour. If you are shooting doves, pick up the short, easy ones yourself. Let your pup sit for 10-15 minutes before he is sent for the difficult retrieves. The exception, of course, is the crippled bird, for which you must send the pup quickly to reduce the odds of escape.

It is best to start the basic obedience routine after you and your dog have had a chance to bond. Obedience alone doesn’t solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem.

While their teeth may be sharp, labradors are RETRIEVERS. The light biting is called mouthing. These dogs are instinctly bred to do this, as they require to apply gentle pressure when retrieving game such as birds and ducks. They are considered sporting dogs.

Many other owners have no trouble getting their dog to walk nicely on a lead in the garden,  but find themselves dragged of their feet within minutes of leaving the garden gate  or whenever a passerby approaches.

We are now masking with training the major trait that we spent a hundred years developing through selective breeding—namely, delivery to hand with a soft mouth. If we take a hard-mouthed dog and put him through the force-fetch program so that he delivers gently to hand, then he will behave like a great dog. We may even make him a field champion through superior training. However, his puppies will still have that genetic tendency toward hard mouth, and we will be going backwards in the selective-breeding process.

“It’s important to remember that puppies are like little kids. And like little kids, they’re uncoordinated, easily distracted, and gentle,” says Steven Applebaum,  president and director of Animal Behavioral College, a school in Northridge, Calif., that trains dog trainers via the Web and externships at shelters throughout the U.S.

If you are going to teach your dog to recall away from children,  you will need to ‘rope in’  some children to help you.   If you are going to teach your dog to walk to heel past other dogs,  again you will need to get help from a friend or friends with other dogs.

RD was recommended to us by the rescue (One Tail at a Time) where we got our dog, Ruby. We knew we were going to have to work with Ruby a lot on multiple issues. She had been in multiple shelters and …although she was well potty trained and liked her crate, she had not been through a lot of normal puppy and people socialization. We were pretty desperate for help and RD brought it. She was able to get us a training within the same day as Ruby’s initial evaluation because her schedule was free. We saw a complete change in Ruby after one visit. After working with her a couple weeks, we had RD back and she was able to bring a couple dogs so we could get Ruby used to walking and being around other dogs in our home. Each time, we learn more about dog behavior and how we can behave to help Ruby progress. RD’s manner is direct and dossier création entreprise and she is always reassuring. She helped us recognize the difference between puppy behavior and breed behavior. We’re so happy to have met RD and feel more and more confident in helping Ruby be happy and healthy. See More

Your puppy needs to learn that people around him, particularly small children, can be a bit unpredictable. But he needs to accept that their unpredictable behavior is not threatening. You can help him do this by imitating a child’s behavior. Try stepping quickly towards his bowl — then drop in a treat. Gently bump into him, while he’s eating, or roll toys nearby — anything to cause a distraction, but drop a treat in the bowl to reward him for continuing to eat calmly. Do this every so often, but not at every meal. If your puppy freezes mid-mouthful, growls or glares at you, stop and try again another time. If this continues, it’s best to seek advice from a veterinary behaviorist or certified dog trainer.

“Leave it! / Drop it!” The first command is important if you see your dog going for that cigarette butt on the ground. The second command is for when they’re already chewing on it. (Related: How to train your lab to drop and leave items.)

Let’s say you are teaching the puppy to sit. You use a toy or treat to lure him into a sitting position. The moment his bottom hits the floor you say “sit”, praise him and give a reward. From this the puppy learns that the word “Sit” means he parks his behind, and when he does so Mum is really pleased. This makes him eager to listen out for those cue words such as “Sit”, which translate in his mind as “Do this and get some easy pickings.”
