Regarding food, try to get the same food your breeder uses so your puppy doesn’t have to go through change which often ends in digestive upset for a few days. The food your breeder uses, or a food you source, will have instructions on how much to feed your puppy and how often. You’ll read advice on how often and what times to feed a puppy in the house training article I already linked to.

Secondly, is the crate the right size? if too large a dog may use one end as a toilet and the other to sleep in. It needs to be just big enough to stand without hitting her head, turn around in easily and lay down paws stretched out…but no bigger.
Sarah has loved and trained both dogs and horses from a very early age. Her Staffordshire bull terrier, Mona, is trained as both a therapy dog and disaster stress relief dog. In addition, Sarah has trained her German Shepherd, Soren, as a service dog.
This site was created and maintained as a place to network and share information about Therapy Dogs that work in schools. I am a school counselor at B.F.Kitchen Elementary, a small public school in Loveland, Colorado. I have been working with Copper, my registered Therapy Dog, in my school since October 2011. During that time, I’ve been able to document the positive impact of having Copper interact with students, staff and families. Working with a dog in school has numerous applications and reaches an extremely diverse group of students.
“Come!” This one is, by far, the most important. If you see your dog running into an unsafe area, you can get them to immediately come back. This is especially important if your dog escapes and is running down the street after something that he shouldn’t. This command should be fool proof. No matter how exciting the stimulation, your dog should always drop whatever they are doing and return to you when called. (Related: Train your lab to come on cue)

Many dog trainers are self-employed, or work for a small business, often owned by a head trainer. Sometimes other pet-related businesses hire dog trainers, such as vets, shelters, groomers, and pet stores. Sometimes trainers are hired by local city or county recreation departments, 4H clubs, or other community groups.

Small pieces of food or a favored toy can be used to motivate your puppy to perform most tasks. Provided the reward is sufficiently appealing, the puppy can be prompted to give the desired response by showing the puppy the reward, giving a command, and moving the reward to get the desired response. For example, food held up over the puppy’s nose and moved slowly backwards should get a ‘sit’ response; food drawn down to the floor should get a ‘down’ response; food brought back up should get a ‘stand’ response; food held out at a distance should get a ‘come’ response; and food held at your thigh as you walk should get the puppy to ‘heel or ‘follow’. By pairing a command phrase or word with each action, and giving the reward for each appropriate response, the puppy should soon learn the meaning of each command.
Ian discusses how we should learn to see the world from our dogs perspective and in doing so, how we can better earn their love and trust. Armed with this love and trust, we will form a better relationship and as a result, effective training becomes just that much more effective and enjoyable for both you and your dog.
A good dog training class is a worthwhile investment in the future of your life with your dog. The time and money you spend on a class or two are a small fraction of what you will spend over your dog’s lifetime, and they will no doubt save you time, money, and more than a little frustration over the years. A class environment provides for some of the socialization your dog needs and teaches him to respond to you even with exciting distractions all around. A good instructor will help you become a more effective trainer and will point out mistakes that you don’t even know you’re making.
Animal Behavior College offers courses of study that prepare graduates for success in three animal professional vocations. At ABC you can become a professional dog trainer, dog groomer or a veterinary assistant. All three programs combine in-home study with a hands on portion called an externship. The externship allows students to work with some of the most talented dog trainers, groomers and veterinary hospitals in the industry. This allows working adults the opportunity to pursue the career of their dreams without having to relocate and quit their jobs to take our courses.
Take safety precautions if your puppy bites. If you’re starting a training program with the help of a qualified trainer, consider muzzling your puppy with a basket muzzle. Your puppy will quickly learn to stop nipping or biting with the help of the muzzle, but muzzling is not recommended if you don’t have a clear understanding of the training approach and goals. If the muzzle isn’t introduced and used properly, your puppy can actually become more dangerous to people, especially those trying to put the muzzle on the puppy.
These programs are designed for the client who loves the idea of sending their furry kids off to bootcamp and having them return home with the equivalency of a masters degree in doggie manners. This gives the clients a huge jump start in being able to lead their dogs around severe distractions.

After a few weeks you will find that when you say this word, your puppy will start to feel the urge to empty himself. This is because the word has become associated in his mind with the act of going to the toilet.

Remember that, early in training, your puppy does not know the meaning of the word. Therefore you could just as easily teach your puppy to sit with the word bananas (or sit in any other language) as you could with the word sit. The key is to associate the word, in this case “sit,” with the action of placing the hind end on the floor.

Unfortunately, our field trials—mainly because of increasing entries—have evolved over the years into elimination contests that evaluate skills that are of little importance in a hunting dog. These behaviors include lining, angle entries into water, pinpoint marking and precise handling at long distances. Gone by the wayside are line manners and obedience, as well as game-finding initiative.
